Okay, I'm saving up money for a new rifle, but I really am having trouble deciding. I've narrowed (as of yet, I may go with some of the nice things Bushmaster has) down to deciding between an AR-15 or a Kalishnakov/SKS. Purchasing won't be a problem as I can just have them ship to my uncle and then sign it over to me, he's a gun dealer.

The K 5 seems like a steal at $690, but I'd also be getting a nice scope and that'll jack up the price quite a bit (although it would for any rifle)

The problem with deciding between this an AK or SKS is the ammo prices over its lifetime. I can get Romanian 7.62mm ammunition for relatively cheap considering simply the amount of it there is, but there's the problem of if I it starts to run dry in the area getting it imported. Then the problem with the 5.56 NATO rounds is the price. Although I could shoot much more reliably targetting with the NATO rounds..

Another issue is hunting, the 7.62 rounds and 30 ot 6 are far better, stopping power just packs a whollup.

Any recommendations? The issue is mostly ammo.

Why do you need a rifle? And if you have 1 already why do you need 2?

I only have 1 12 gauge and 2 .22's right now, I'm looking for a rifle that I can hunt with but also regularly go sport shooting with. Always taking another person's is annoying.

Because this is America and in America, having two of something instantly makes it better.

Rakurai: I really don't know much about guns...I'd probably just go with the cheaper one.

<insert my usual diatribe on guns and hunting here>

Olympic Arms has a lifetime warranty on their products too which is a real asset to me swinging towards them. I just wish the 5.56 had better stopping power :/. I don't want to have to take a lot of shots and cause a lot of racket and possibly lose the game if it doesn't go down on the first shot.

ak, it is more realible, and when you're in the woods you need realibility. Just imagine if you suddenly cross the border with canada, and see Stern, but your gun jams, well it won't happen with an ak, + it's a one shot kill.

snore...guns:sleep: , can't you find something more constructive to do with your time than shoot stuff, or shoot MORE stuff with MORE guns, so you can shoot more at the same time. woooooo

Take up origami or a ballet class instead.

Thanks for your wonderful contribution to my thread.

s'ok buddy :D just warn me next time you make a gun thread and i'll be there faster! After all we can't waste more time, we need to shoot more stuff quicker, with a rifle in each hand :p Your like Arnie i know it, don't let me down now i have this mental image.

don't get a damn M-16 copy, the 5.56 round is crap at best, sure it may be a a nice, sturdy rifle that's fairly accurate, but after having used M-16 A2s on a number of occasions I'm gonna suggest upping to 7.62, especially if you're hunting anything like deer or bear, now a 5.56 might be alright for a rabbit or squirrel, but anything bigger and you need more power
it's sad the US army doesn't at least go up to the 6.8 round.... *sigh*

My advice: Don't buy a gun, donate the money to charity. You'll feel much better.

Well, it depends on what you're gonna be hunting. If you are gonna shoot rabbits you won't need the extra power of the more powerful (and probably cheaper) one.

He means the sport of killing Iraqies.

Because you never know when that bear in the woods is just a commie in disguise.

by asking this question you prove you've never done it before, because if you had you wouldn;t be asking at all, you'd be saying something like "right on, get an assault weapon cause they're fricking awesome!"

This post helped me remember a movie where a couple of rich guys go hunt ducks with AK 47's :p

The Kalashnikov is inaccurate over longer ranges but it does have the extra stopping power, the ar15 is more accurate over longer ranges but lacks stopping power. But then, if you're hunting from longer rangers, you wouldn't really go for an assault rifle as a more powerful and more accurate bolt action would probably better. It would also depend on the enviroment, a dirty environment isn't too goood for Western weapons, especially the m16 and it's variants so an ak would be better.

Relatively clean enviroment at medium to long range for smaller animals - baby deer or smaller, i would go for the ar15.

Dirty enviroment or shorter ranges hunting larger animals - ak

long range to very long range hunting smaller to larger animals - a bolt action precision high calibre rifle.

edit: and if you don't like guns, stop using it as a petty excuse to up your post count you bunch of idiots.

Wait, AR-15! Is anyone else having HL2 flashbacks.

He would walk from Arizona to Canada? Pretty persistent hunter, I would say.

You have to be persistent if you're hunting Stern, he is rarely sighted in public and often wears camoflaged outfits to blend in with innocent civilians around him when he does pop out. :E

Damn't raki...get me a ar-15 or ak while you're at it. :D

sorry im not into assault rifles. sigghhh bolt action for me.

I agree with Viper....AR15!!

It's just a civilian version of an M16.

The M16 is still vastly inferiour to the ak47 in quite a number of aspects, including reliability, price, duarability and stopping power - the only downside is availability of ammunition in America.

i wanna buy me an M4 personally, i just need some cash first... anyone wanna make a donation? it's for a good cause, i swear

Rakurai, I'd go with a .308/7,62 as someone already said. M14/G3/FN FAL.

Depends if you pick Terrorist or Counter-Terrorist.

Screw the semi-autos, get a real man's gun and get an auto!

CS CT's use an M4 which is inferior to an M16 with the exception of its weight. If you want to put it in simplest terms possible it's almost literally that they slapped a shorter barrel on the M16 and called it the M4 Carbine.

I've got a lot to consider then. All the uses are battling each other for which gun, and I guess these are some similar problem the military faced when making the switch from the M14. heh :p.

An Ak47 would be nice considering the conditions of where I live. But it's not like I'd never clean it. But if I was going with a 7.62mm set rifle I'd end up going with an SKS probably.

Bleh decisions decisions. If I had enough money I'd just buy both.

Scarily similar to how I felt when I went to this brothel one time...

Not if they're wearing Kevlar + Helmet (though that's more expensive). You can still get a nice headshot though..

Oh wait, wrong forum :D

What about an Ak74, not sure how it compares with the ar15, definately not as powerful as a 47 though.
