Quake Wars: Public Beta Next Week

It's a public beta so I don't think there's an NDA. Impressions, screens and vids ftw.

EDIT: I keep hearing impressions that the game is devoid of tactical gameplay :(

People you need to find the original ET game and play it! It's for free lol. The original was like a DM only that you could build stuff and have it destroyed by the opposition quickly. This one it seems like more of the same with better graphics. You still have goals to follow, etc. The sounds are horrible but I think a mod can fix that.

I've never been part of a beta (except for Supreme Commander, but that wasn't really official) so I really want to be a part of this one.

I've only ever been part of the halo 3 beta and I had to get crackdown for that :(

It looks like im going to miss the beta. :/

FP subs get their 1st crack at key in "the middle of the week"

I assume that means Wednesday but they're probably just giving themselves a window to bump it back a little in case anything comes up.

If you sign up for a year's worth of Fileplanet ($40) you get the Beta right now.

If you're a subscriber to Fileplanet already, the first wave of keys go out sometime Wednesday. There will be more keys released each day. Then, on Saturday, non-subscribers get their first crack at signing up for keys.

They've said they have 30,000 keys reserved for Subscribers and the other 30,000 for free account holders.

They spread out key distribution like this so more people have a chance to sign up. Also:

I'll be getting in on Wednesday if I can help it. No way I'm dropping $40 just to play a day early.

EDIT: Community forums have people posting impressions + Videos

http://community.enemyterritory.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1973

Oh my God, those videos are a relief to see...
None of that stupid bunny-hop speed-fests.

how many times are you going to post the same thing? you spammed this message in every beta-related thread on the quakewars site too--nobody cares. Also, the information page isn't the sneak peek... the sneak peek refers to getting to play the beta early. Duh.

LOL! I'm glad you noticed. Welcome to the forums.

Besides, I waited my due 30 seconds, so not spam. :)

I watched a few of those videos and in one of them he was running through some building and you could see some infantry combat outside with people sliding and high speeds in every direction. FFS, do you even lose speed while strafing here?

EDIT: I keep hearing impressions that the game is devoid of tactical gameplay :(

I can tell you that, despite the obvious similarities, Quake Wars doesn't play quite like ET and is even further removed from RTCW. It's not suprising - adding vehicles (especially massive ones that can fly about and blow the shit out of things) and increasing the size of maps to such a degree will result in changes to gameplay. Some will love it (I predict those who prefer ET over RTCW), and others, well, we'll find out soon enough :)

Apparently you can sprint and jump forever. If you pull the trigger while sprinting, it slows you down to normal run speed only when you're firing then you speed right back up. You can also sprint-strafe as well. So from the sounds of things, you could probably do bursts while strafing and it'd be almost as if you're at a sprint the whole time.

After reading so many perspectives on this game I've all but decided to ignore it all until I get the chance to play it myself, but I have a few questions for you:

-Do vehicles even play much of a role or do they die very quickly? I hear 2 SMG clips take down 25-50% of a tank's health.

-Do people work as fireteams much or do they just run around TDM style?

-What's your favorite thing in QW?

Yeah, I just watched the last two vids.

Oh well, can't expect a realistic tactical shooter when it comes to the Quake verse.
We'll all find out if it was worth the wait soon enough, I loved Wolf : ET and would take it over RTCW's original mp any day.

And if QW is as moddable as Wolf ET, I'm sure all over our problems can be easily taken care of.
(being unable to shoot while sprint or jumping, adding a stamina bar, making vehicles alot stronger)

I can't really answer those questions properly, Amish, but can safely say that vehicles do have a significant role Quake Wars. If you're familiar with ET you can probably work out how it plays like - add the vehicles and let your imagination to the rest.

Can you tell me something that will get you kicked out of the beta? :p

Sure thing, I didnt agree to an NDA so im all open noobs.

( I guessed my friends beta account and never agreed to any NDA when downloading and installing the game and using his account)

It is... They also said only subscribers can get it a day early...

Oh, so it'll be open to all tomorrow?

edit : Just did a bit more reading, apparently we(non-subs) have to wait until Saturday or so.
Damn it, I won't be here. :|

yea beta for subscribers have been otu for a while now and there are still many keys left so yea

Don't panic non-subs. They've reserved 30,000 for subscribers and 30,000 for non-subscribers. There are multiple phases of key releases so if you happen to miss one release, you could probably catch another.

I just played for a little over an hour (The stat tracking says "1.10 hours :p). I only saw 3-5 servers that had slots open that were under 100 ping, probably because of the stress of this release.

I have my graphics at 1024x768, max details, no AA/AF and it runs at the 30 fps cap except for the first 2 seconds. I only noticed one little bug so far and it was extremely trivial (I had 1 more xp from completing the final objective than another guy on my team and it gave him the highest xp award - meh). There was only one instance of lag where everybody kinda froze for about 1 second and then it was smooth sailing.

I joined the GDF team first, I happened to get in during the warm-up period. Basically it's a TK-fest until enough people hit F3 to ready up. Apparently it's not clearly marked for enough people because this lasted 2+ minutes :| They should just remove the "F3 to Ready" aspect altogether and make the warm-up period a fixed amount of time.

Before I get into further impressions I'll explain the map:

GDF must move forward to an outpost and deactivate an shield the Strogg have by building an EMP Disruptor. Along the way they can capture a forward spawn on a hill a short distance from the outpost to put more pressure on the Strogg. This forward spawn also allows the territory to expand forward allowing for more deployables.

When the engineer starts building the EMP disruptor, the progress he's made will stay for a short time - maybe 1-2 mins, can't remember. So if you die, you'll have a chance to pick up where you left off if you play it right.

Once an engineer manages to build the EMP Disruptor, the GDF get a new spawn point in the outpost which is permanent and cannot be retaken by the Strogg (unlike forward spawn points).

From here, the GDF has the opportunity to capture another forward spawn point just outside the sewer facility they are supposed to infiltrate. There is quite a bit of battle indoors and outdoors of this area, but lots of the time Strogg will choose to make the sewer grate rooms a bottleneck.

It's up to the soldier class to plant some explosives on 1 of 2 grates to gain access to the sewer controls. These charges need to be placed, armed and then defended for around 45-60 seconds. Once these blow, it's up to the covert ops class to go in and hack sewer controls which behaves like the EMP Disruptor in that progress is saved for a time. Once that's completed GDF win.

Obviously Strogg just are on the defensive the whole time stopping the GDF from doing this. One class (constructor?) can defuse the charges soldiers lay by the sewer grate, but apart from that, it's just a matter of killing whoever is trying to complete the main objective or defending/retaking a forward spawn.

There are a number of auxiliary objectives to go after besides the forward spawn points. Just like SD said, missions are generated upon certain events. If anybody calls out for health and you're a medic, you'll have the chance to take the mission of healing/reviving this guy for some bonus xp. Same goes for other classes when enemy deployables are built. You can take a mission to blow them up for xp. There are guard towers to be built and extra sewer doors to be blown open to grant speedier access to the sewer control room as well.

Bottom line, there's a variety of stuff you can do to help the team out and still get xp.

I usually enjoy playing the class for the key objectives (building the EMP and hacking the sewers) but when I switched to Strogg I started playing a bit more for myself while still helping the team. I took one of the Strogg jetpack thingies (think Tribes + grenades to chuck) and got to high ground near the GDF forward spawn when they were just outside the sewer facility and took up position with my railgun (Strogg sniper). I went through ALL my ammo taking people down as they tried to charge into the sewers to take the objective. Whenever somebody spotted me and tried to shoot me (not too easy unless they tried to countersnipe - which they didn't), I'd take them down, jump back into the jetpack and relocate. It was actually a lot of fun and I managed to help the team by easing the pressure the GDF were putting on the sewer areas. :)

About ground combat: No it isn't tactical, but it certainly isn't Q3/4 or anything. You CANNOT strafe completely sideways and sprint like people had said on other forums. You can go diagonal and sprint, but the angle isn't crazy. I haven't seen any excessive hopping either. After you land a jump there's a slight delay until your next and jump height appears to be the exact same on successive jumps. Combat is quick but it's not DM paced like some impressions have led us to believe.

I didn't even notice any in-game ads. I completely forgot there were any at all in the game. I was a little wrapped up with everything else.

they're there ..or at least place holders

thanks for the impressions ..has the nda been lifted?

It's a public beta so nope, no NDA to worry about.

Time to see how high I can take resolution, AA and AF while taking some screens.

NDA? Something to do with showing media I assume.

For those reading their community site forums, yes, that's me spamming the hell out of them for their Fileplanet relationship and ads.

Sadly, I can only run it on 1280x1024 with no AA/AF or it chops up sometimes on my comp.

Oh yeah, and BOO big time to not being able to alt-tab out of the game. That just sucks.
