Also, I really think Christian Bale brought this movie down... he gave a very shit performance with his sore throat voice.

agreed. definitely not his best performance.
still an enjoyable film though. the action sequences were worth the price of admission alone imo.

7/10

Gran Torino - Get the hell of my lawn!/10

Finally saw this. The ending really got to me.;(
Great movie

I quite enjoyed him in Equilibrium.

Great movie

This was an excellent movie. Sad that it's his last.

Eight Legged Freaks - 1/10

I didn't know that spiders could make sounds, but apparently they can.. lol..

Still, isn't 1/10 a little harsh? I'd say at least a 2/10.. Saw it in the theater. Not too bad, since going in I wasn't expecting much.

People taking tongue-in-cheek films too seriously
1/10

No, see, a good tongue-in-cheek film would be Arachnophobia; this was just pure garbage in every way, shape, and form. A film that embraces and revels in poor taste, exhausting every cliche known to man for cheap entertainment? Far too many people think this is okay. It's not.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire - 6/10

Lacked spirit, I think.

Valkyrie - 7.5/10...
Nice change of pace as far as WW2 films are concerned, really enjoyed it.
Buuut... Tom Cruise felt extremely out of place and I think it would've helped the film's overall atmosphere if everyone had actually spoke German, I just wasn't convinced that they were actually in Germany.
Hell, they didn't even use German accents!

Evil Roy Slade - 6.5/10

Hilarious as hell, but the middle of the film is really really painfully slow with pacing. Probably one of the better made-for-tv films I've seen.

Babylon A.D. 2/10

Diesel's worst performance ever. I was disappointed.

Drag Me To Hell - 8/10

Was deciding between this and Salvation. Not disappointed with my choice. Even though I eventually had to boot two other noisy asses out of the theater, I enjoyed every second of it. It's campy as hell and employs all the conventional tropes, but it's all done to good effect. Lots of stuff going in and out of peoples' mouths. :p

I was expecting a twist to the ending that never came, but it works. I approve.

Akira - F**king amazing/10

I absolutely love Katsuhiro Otomo's work (art & otherwise).

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 - 6.5/10...
Not as good as I remember it, used to own it on VHS so many years ago... lost it.
It was on TV, it was so... corny.

But, it was pretty fun and the nostalgia was great.

Zack & Mari Make a Porno 8.5/10

It started off so ****ing hilarious. Pure genius. About mid-way, at the part where the mac fag plays a ... mac ... fag, it had me in stitches.

After that it ran out of laughs.

12 Monkeys: 6/10
I can't be too sure about the score... I was in a loud room where basically everyone was MST3000ing it up. So that was at least entertaining.

Major Payne: 7.5/10
I love this movie.

I'd give 12 Monkeys another try...it's not a film for everyone, but it's a complete mind trip that I had to watch at least twice before I really even understood everything.

Twelve Monkeys is great. Love that film so much, might watch it again this week. Be sure to check out Brazil aswell, but watch them alone, or not in a noisy environment or somesuch.

Top films.

I recently purchased the DVD's for all 3. I was so pissed with the costumes of the 3rd one. Either way, I love watching those movies, and I usually go back and forth watching them.

Army of Darkness 8/10

Hail to the king baby!

Ong Bak - 9/10
Tony Jaa... 'nuff said.

Stay - 7/10
Surprisingly good 2005 flick starring Ewan MacGregor. I was afraid it'd be artsy and pretentious and it turned out to be artsy and... well, good.

The Royal Tenenbaums - 8/10
Huge Wes Anderson fan, this was the last film of his I had left to watch and I loved it. Excellent performance by all parties, especially Gene Hackman.

It was entertaining, but the *shocking* ending was predictable. It's one of those movies based on a simple idea, inserting weird stuff just for the hell of it.

A movie with a similar "plot twist" which I liked more, was Identity.

I really need to get my hands on 2 and 3 as my VCR recently busted and I've been aching for more since rewatching the first on DVD

Been a long, long time so I'm going back through the Studio Ghibli collection, get to do it chronologically too. English dub for the most part, I fancy watching films right now, not reading (and I have a few of the borked Buena Vista releases with the horrid dubtitles anyway)

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984) - 3/5
This movie inevitably sets me thinking about the seven-volume manga, and it pales in comparrison. Inevitable, since Miyazaki would write about four of those volumes over the next decade, but its rather jarring seeing some characters in roles that they quickly grew out of in the serial (Asbel as love-interest, Kushana as antagonist). In movie form it feels a whole lot less epic, and just becomes an entertaining action-cartoon. Fair enough, but considering the generally sub-par animation and limited colour-palette, it's strictly a fan-only affair. Also, even the most green-souled environmentalist can't help but giggle at some of the quite literal tree-hugging the protagonist indulges in. Oh, and 'Valley of the Wind' sets the more immature synapses in my brain firing for some reason.

Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986) - 3/5
From windy buttcrack to bitching floating castle. I think to do justice to this one, I really ought to rewatch it in Japanese. There's about 30% more script in the dub-version, and it's mostly extremely annoying exposition and ad-libbing from minor characters. Nevertheless, I 'felt' this a lot less than I remember when I first watched it, which is now some time ago. The main antagonist is as generic as possible, and the switch of the pirates from foe to friend is not without its troubles. The animation is mostly uninteresting, and feels cheap in the final sequences. Again, the colour-palette is quite limited, and the characters frankly psychedelic. The background art has improved a lot, and there are some particularly lovely sunny / cloudy images in the open-air, helped along by the (re-scored for this version) soundtrack to give it a serene feel, but overall, it's little more than a diverting action-romp.

Laputa feels like it should be connected to Nausicaa (not just because of the Fox-Squirrel cameo), but it isn't. I always felt that was a missed opportunity... Another missed opportunity would be the lack of a Nausicaa JRPG, which could be frankly awesome (even if Final Fantasy has already taken the Horseclaws and called them Chocobos).

Coraline
5/5

As for Miyazaki the only anime of his I've watched and really enjoyed was Howl's. Dianna Wynne Jones is teh awesome, he should adapt more of her stuff, possibly the sequel.

I got them all in a box set from WalMart

You smart mother****er.

Taken 7.5/10 Kinda dissapointed here. The build up to the action took far too long and there wasn't enough to completely satisfy. Fun, but by no means as good as I heard.

Tora! Tora! Tora! 8/10 Pretty damn interesting, and some impressive as hell effects for the time.

Almost a Woman 6.5/10 As far as movies watched in Spanish near the end of the school year, it was alright.

W. 8.5/10 Much better than I expected. Exaggerated to all hell and still seems to paint people in a kind light.

Outlander - 8.5/10

Really loved this movie because it flowed really well, had a lot of stuff that i love, and it was original in that I've never seen anything like it. Its kinda like a hybrid movie, but my friend and I loved it from the get go.

Push - 7/10

Kinda like a realistic Xmen movie, it had elements that would have made it a good movie, but for one the script was kinda weak, and there was barely any emotion in the acting. Its like, "my mom is being held hostage," "we'll get her out all right" and so on. Also some of the stuff said and done in the movie is just plain annoying like the screaming guys.

Terminator Salvation - 9/10

Bloody good film.

Just saw this one last night! Id give it 8/10. So far its my favorite Miyazaki movie. I didn't even know it was based on a mange 'till I read your post. Going to have to get that one. Watched the dub, and was really pleased with it. I tend to be one of those elitist subtitle only types, but I didn't want to read the movie either. Loved to hear Patrick Stewart, and I grinned ear to ear when I heard Frank Welker's voice. Just bought Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. I got tickets to see an interview with Miyazaki at UC Berkely, so Im also watching a few Ghibli at the moment, especially the ones I havent seen yet, such as Porco Roso, The Castle of Cagliostro, and Castle in the Sky.

Tonight I saw UP. Giving it a 9/10. The only reason its getting a 9 and not a 10 is for a very stupid audio gag involving a dog. It was funny for a few seconds, but it lasted waaaay to long. But over all this movie was absolutely wonderful. The opening montage is so well made that it may be one of the best parts of the film. Highly recommended.
