So the model used for the scientist arguing with the Gman is random? I always got slick in my 3 play thru's... Must be purely coincidental..
But we got to keep this in mind. I'm sure Marc Laidlaw (the writer) had no idea about the story line of HL2, what characters will return in HL2 etc when he was writing HL1. So what he is likely to do is revisit his old HL1 script and look for a character that will fit into the story of HL2.( So that no one can say "hey I saw that guy dead!! I gibbed his dead body to a million pieces with my crowbar!! How can he return in HL2?? and stuff like that )
This is why Kliner and Eli worked. Gordon had no weapon when he met them after the resonance cascade. So it is plausible to assume that any player would NOT kill them ( Unless u r a bloodthirsty butcher who would pick up the crowbar from near the elevator, go all the way back killing every living being in sight ) Anyway Kliener and Eli did not die of an accident (Got headcrabbed, something blew up in their face etc)and it is way possible that the player would not kill them also ( Since the crowbar is found sometime after we leave the 2 scientists )
Same for the scientist arguing with Gman.. No one can prove he died because he was way out of Gordons path.. the only problem is the random model thing... Valve would expect players to forgive this little inconsistency..
But think of the importance of this character. He has spoken with the Gman personally ( So he may have some inkling of WTF Gman is), he ran the experiment ( So he may have intimate knowledge of the experiment and Xen and those Yellow crystals ). That is quite a CV! This scientist would be at the very top of any shortlist of returning characters from HL1.
He is much better than some random scientist dont u think?
I'm changing the name of this theory ( With Mickaels blessing ) to the Scientist-who-argued-with-gman-and-ran-the-experiment.Cheers!!
