damn the garbage is bandit central, i was in the junk yard with bes and defeated the raid and killed the bandit leader but when looting corses the yard was attacked from the east, he got killed so i was able to get his silenced ak, but geez the bandits constantly attack, there must be over 30 corpses around the perimeter...

he drops a silenced ak? damn I cant find his body anywhere never mind his gun ;( ..and ya that camp is difficult as you dont have much time to vacate before you're swarmed by bandits ..I ended up making a stand in the guard house a few times until I finally sprinted out of there during a break in the action

They come in waves, I'll usually take one out and then vacate while the next one prepares.

Apparently gamershell.com doesn't have the DD version of the patch. Unless I'm just missing the obvious.

I'm waiting for it too. If memory serves, it's usually a few days before it comes to direct 2 drive. There is a "patches" link on the left side nav halfway down or so that I'll be checking once or twice a day.

yeah, I checked the patches link on direct2drive, nothing yet. I just don't want to keep advancing in the game when I know the patch will come out soon (which eliminates the saves) arrgghhhh!

Getting a 500GB Seagate Barracuda tomorrow anyway, so having a fresh XP partition and a SATA/16Mb Cache playing STALKER with the patch.....I'm excited :D

I didn't get far in the game anyway, as far as agroprom research facility

I dled the D2D ver of the game too : /

I'd reccomend you do as i'm about to, and just torrent a copy of the CD version, because the D2D version isn't compatible with the CD version online (I think D:).

Is it it possible to trade with the... Trader? If so, how?

Cause I've got some loot on me I'd like to get rid off by selling it rather than dropping it.

EDIT Nvm, just noticed the "trade" button.

Talk to him, then at the bottom of screen click the 'Trade' button. :D

I actually missed that completely until I'd gotten pretty far.

Same.

If I install the patch, is there a way of reverting back to the original version if I decide it wasnt worth loosing the saves?

I would imagine you can save the savegames, then uninstall the game with the patch, then just re-install the game and don't install the patch on top of it.

It would probably work if you backup the save in another directory, then unistall/install the game, then cut/pastee the save file

I wish the weapons were more accurate. They also feel a bit weak :?

Enjoying the game so far, though.

I wish the weapons were more accurate.
They need to use the Battlefield 2 stlye crosshair where there's a part that blinks/appears when a bullet makes contact. It's annoying not having a clue if you're hitting someone or not.

Yeah that is a good point Stardog...damn never know when i hit anyone! D:

Yea installed the patch and started a new game

Important note - this time i didn't kill Nimble :O

Does he give you any quests or anything? He just sleeps for me atm

D:

So I installed the patch, figured I'd start over and avoid failing timed missions this time around but I noticed something strange...

Armor decays when it takes hits? the blue actually diminishes after each gunfight. Although they did add more body armor drops in the game, bandits now have a chance of dropping bandit armor. But still, it's annoying that you can't repair your stuff.

Yeah, would love to be able to repair my shit. My weapons before i patched were starting to get pretty dodgy, especially my silenced AK D:

Repair would be very cool to be able to do :D

And you can get Bandit armour from dead ones! :O

I wish the weapons were more accurate. They also feel a bit weak :?

Patch fixed this a bunch for me. Had a much easier time going through that first bandit mission with my pistol actually you know..hitting people :|

Its funny, by the time i got the game and decided to start over after an hour of screwing things up i had found the patch had been posted online. Game runs nice and smooth for me now and no artifacts when it rains.

FYI, under the agropom complex in Strolek's stash room there is a custom AKM 74 that is a hell of a lot better than a lot of the later assault rifles.

As for strategies, i've given up on even having a pistol, i just carry an assault rifle with a different one that uses a different ammo pool as backup. Normally single fire is the name of the game since you need it for those headshots. Exept when fightign the tougher mutants, i.e. bloodsuckers and up. Then its spray as much lead as you can before they rip you apart.

As far as degrading armor is concerned, its not too bad. By the time any of my armor has been damaged even a tiny bit, I've usually found some other armor lying about.

Lastly, is anyone else here really freaked out by "controllers" the ones that try to steal your mind with psychic attacks? Cause the first time that happened in the underground tunnels, it scared the shit out of me.

Man multiplayer is really awesome.

Just sat down for about an hour and played some team deathmatch.

If you can get past the lag, it's amazing.

Torrent died on me several times, so I just went out and bought it.

I am highly dissapointed. It has a great atmosphere and all, but it is really a shadow of what it could have been. I am especially dissapointed with the low res textures, models and animations, as well as the piss poor aiming. Still, one of the scariest games I've played (mainly due to the fact that my guns are completley useless), and has a very nice atmosphere.

I find the guns in this game great actually. I often carry an scoped assult rifle to take off guys far away. When I am running low on ammo or guys get close I just pistol head shots. Works quite well. I like the combat in this game, it's not "pop head shots and pwn".

Anyone have tips on using the knife? The range on the thing is EXTREMELY short, I can't even knife a dog without having to crouch and aiming directly at the head. Reason to use it is that it dispatches bandits pretty quick if you can get close to actually use it. One stab to the head and they're dead.

I wish people would stop complaining about the accuracy. Get late into the game and get some decent fire arms. You start out with a pistol ffs don't expect to be uber godly.

The first one I ran from didn't even realize the bastard was there apart from the loudness of it all. The second one jumps out at you after turning off the first psi emitter. I immediately shot that guy in the head and he dropped.

Does aiming through ironsight even help? it seems the accuracy doesnt change one bit when your not zoomed up to ironsite, and when you are

Cool, I just discovered that you can throw bolts that trigger anomalties. <- this is from the person who did not figure out how to use handgrenades until 5 hours into the game, couldnt figure out how to equip them :(

I know with the G36 and Tunder it does a TON for accuracy.

If you shoot any more than a 3 round burst then you wont hit shit. I always have my guns on single shot mode so that I can hit shit. The only time i have it on auto is when I am in close areas such as tunnels or buildings. Someone posted a video of them trying to kill someone and complained about how they were so innacurate. This isnt CS, you cant just hold the mouse button down and expect to hit anything.

Also, the g36 or whatever freaking pwns. The thing is crazy accurate.

Yeah, but it's still kinda hard when the weapon does often not hit where you aim, especially at medium and high range. :|

As for the knife, it seems a bit dodgy, but in one go at the first "kill the bandits" mission my BF2 skills payed off when I shot a guy a few times with a pistol, emptied the clip at the moment when he started staggering, took out my knife and knifed him in the face :D

Funny thing - I stabbed the first bloodsucker I encountered, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to kill it. I noticed some strange distortions near a pillar and sneaked up to it. Who's the stealthy one, bitch? ;)

Yep.

I was using a Fast-Shooting AK-74(?) /w attached scope for so long. Much better accuracy than most guns, insane fire rate, good handling, and etc.... Incredible gun really.

\o/

I found the Vintar with the scope in the Freedom base.

:D

The ranges aren't usually that extreme in CS either though. Some of the guns in STALKER are incredibly accurate, maybe even more so than CS once you get used to them. You can't spray and pray from extreme distances in CS, just like STALKER.

If a CS player tries to spray anymore than 2-3 bullets down Long A in Dust2 you're not going to hit much, especially with an AK. M4 might allow 3-4

I disagree burst firing 1-3 shots in Stalker is way less accurate than CS.

The shooting mechanics are the most serious drawback in the game for me. I'm used to games where I can kill someone in a few shots and often, especially at medium and long range shooting in single shots pays off.

In STALKER, I found out that I'm having more success spraying at someone. Let's say there's someone 20m away from me. I aim through the iron sights. I can fire single shots which deal little damage; often don't hit and it takes some time before the enemy goes down. However when I point at the enemy and start shooting full auto, it goes down quickly. I don't like that.

Also Unfocused, ammo can become really scarce during missions. I remember one mission I was literally down to my knife and started killing guys with that. Spraying guys wastes ammo. Try and get the head shots.

I'm not bad with the knife. During the first rebel-assult mission I killed everyone with it with very little life loss. Was great. Then during the final-qualification round in the arena where you only have a knife and some nades and the other dude was basically pimped out in shit. Got him with only using the knife.

Right because CS is horribly unrealistic. Anyone that claims CS is realistic should be blindfolded, tied to a tree, and the tree set on fire as metal claws tear his or her stomach open and rip the intestines out.
I do wish however that guns in STALKER did more damage...sometimes you get 1 shot 1 kill but most of the time you don't.

Which is how its supposed to be because of their armor. If you take a late game gun and attack rebels with it, their armor doesnt do shit against it and you can take them out easy. Same goes for the other way, weak guns vs heavy armor. I just tried taking out the military checkpoint at the newbie place, and I just had a pistol and shotgun. I used all my pistol rounds, two grenade (which killed most of them) and some shot gun shells to take them all out. Which is how it should be, because they have heavy armor.

I'm surprised. I love this game.

Unlike most fps to date, to survive you have to assume the AI will play as though they are real, unpredictable people, and not the usual routine following robots. Yes, it has it's dumb bunching-together-looking-at-sky moments (nothing a grenade in the middle doesn't fix), but i'm still being amazed by the spookily lifelike tactics these digital buggers adopt.
It's uncanny just how similar to online BF2 the firefights are. Cheats n' all.

Cheating is annoying, but if you're used to online gaming, it's easy to accept the occassional cheat shot from an AI. And comfort can be obtained by knowing that this AI can be smarter than the average online script-kiddie.

Real life pwned by teh robotsez. Woo.

Are you compensating for gravity?

They're not hundreds of meters away, nor am I firing tank shells at them, so I don't think there's need for that.

As for saving ammo, I don't have a problem with that, but then again I still tend to shoot people with single shots rather spraying (which works well here). I also tend to use weapons popular in a certain area. For example I started using some rifle which most people had at the railroads, instead of my AK, cause I knew I won't run low on ammo for it.

BTW I was playing at the railroads, where you have to help some scientist reach a certain location and it was one of the most frustrating parts ever. I gave up and failed the mission, I hope there won't be any major consequences. It's just plain dumb, about 10 mercenaries come rushing at the scientist which decides to crouch in a corner, prone to enemy fire, and fire a pistol at them. It's probably not impossible to save his ass, but I've quickloaded and either died or had the scientist die too many times to bother anymore o_O.
