Student arrested after cutting food with knife

oh yeah i remember that one. it was posted here a while back.

I remember when teachers were no longer allowed to use Red pens, for it may damage the children. "Red ink is to negative for a child mind."

now they use purple ink to mark all the answers wrong.

..

Our school had metal slides on the playground that caused severe burns, and swings that could nearly launch children into orbit. But we didn't use the slide if we weren't wearing pants. And after being hurt on the swing, we didn't jump off anymore.

A child needs to learn things the hard way sometimes so they are better prepared when they are older and less invincible.

In U.S., the smallest thing is the next biggest threat to the world -_-

I guess it could only happen in America, In my school in NZ a teacher caught a student with a flick knife, confiscated it, and gave it back end of term, none of this ARREST HIM HE's GONNA KILL SOMEONE!!!111

Wait wait wait wait wait.

There's a reason cuss words are censored here?

well, when I brought a knife to school in 6th grade (roughly 22 years ago), police showed up in class, confiscated the knife, escorted me to the principals office. The policeman left, the principal kept my knife in his desk drawer and said that I would need for a parent to come pick it up.

I was involved in a questioning with the principal:

Principal - "what made you bring a knife to school"

Me - "people told me someone was going to beat me up, and he was much bigger than me, so I thought It would ward him off. I wasn't going to stab him"

Principal - "Ok, you can't bring weapons to school, your parent will have to come get it if you want it back"

Principal - "I want you to know that this is very serious. you could be expelled* for it. I'm going to have to suspend you for a few days. Don't bring weapons to school anymore."

*expelled means no longer allowed to attend public schools - (in that county I think)

Instead I was suspended for like 2 days and my parent was contacted about it.

The end.

I didn't get a criminal record or anything. never heard from the police from it again.

Justice is done.

yea ok, but a) this is a GIRL who is 10. Why the hell scare the hell out of her by even bringing the police into this? Teacher could've easily took the knife from her and explained why she wasn't allowed to bring one to school. But no, as always the americans think this girl will commit an act of their favorite word "terrorism" and stab everyone.

Give me a break, please.

It was a steak knife. Not a butter knife. What would happen if she accidently threw it? Like a wiimote?
Also, we need moar information! What was she cutting with said knife? Was she emo? Does she play violent video games?

Anyway i think i brought a knife to school once, showed it to a few friends at my table(This was after the national exam PSLE at 12 years old so we were like slacking off and had nothing to da in school while waiting for results) my teacher saw it, told me to keep it in my bag and i did that and nothing happened again.

You have a computer! You might be hacking into the government's computers and getting vital information. Better put you on death row.

I was 11 when it happened to me. I didn't find it scary that a policeman showed up in class to get me. (I actually felt kind of cool TBH.) It just brought to my attention that this was serious, and I knew I was in trouble. I didn't fear that I would go to jail or anything.

Why would police scare the crap out of a child? And well, the police were involved because it is a crime. Aren't police supposed to protect and serve - not terrorize children. As a child, I was never taught to fear police by my parents.

On a similar note, just because a rapist is in 5th grade doesn't mean that it's not a crime.

"As always," "their favorite word 'terrorism,'" - Oops, sweeping generalization again!

And how do you know, or rather assume, that "the americans" knew what the girl was going to do with the knife?

Not until you pull your head out of your ass.

the fact that you guys are actually worried about a little 10 year old girl using a steak knife to cut her food is mind boggling. As I said before, the teacher could've easily talked to the student and taken the knife away without wasting time and calling the police for absolutely NOTHING.

Call the police if the girl was using the knife to hurt someone not cutting her food. Use your brain you retards.

She was cutting her food when they found it. And she said she had done it before.

she...she did what? Cut her food?! And on top of that, even admits that she had DONE IT BEFORE?! Christ, we're dealing with a sick son of a bitch here.

Eh well, it's a crime to bring a knife to school. What she was doing with it is completely irrelevant. If she was using it to hurt someone, that is an additional crime called 'assault with a deadly weapon.'

What if she brought drugs to school. Hey, just take it away right? It's not like she was hurting anyone.

No need to involve the police with crime or anything.

It's always a waste of time to have police do their job and handle crime.

Let's let the teachers, who have all of their training and education in teaching, handle the crime unit now. :dozey:

That is wasting the teachers time when they should be teaching the students.

You have made your point that you don't think it is serious. And I don't think it is very serious either. I don't think anyone is arguing that anyone was in danger by this girl. That is not my point. I only argue that I think the correct steps were taken. A teacher could lose their job for not doing their job and doing things by the book. If a crime is commited, then police should be involved.

You make it sound like a SWAT team showed up and nuked her.

Did you even know that the butter knife was invented because people kept being killed at dinners with guests? All knives were ordered to have their point removed by the king to reduce the number of fatalities resulting from disagreements at the dining table. And thus we still to this day have the butter knife, or table knife.

I'm sorry, but this is just completely wrong. There are actually two main types of butterknife--the master butterknife and the spreader butterknife, which is blunted. The master butterknife has a pointed blade and is used for cutting small chunks of butter and distributing to people's plates. The spreader is then used by each diner to spread the butter onto their food. The reason this blade has no point is because the point would cause the knife to tear the bread as the butter is being spread. Furthermore, there is a variety of pointed and or sharp knives which would have occasionally made their way onto the table, such as cheese knives.

thanks, I did not know how important the difference is between a master butter knife and a spreader butterknife.

umm wtf yo.

Whatever. You have lost your mind. LOL.

Point is, all knives used to be sharp (before butter knives and round tipped knives were invented).

FACT - Long long ago, There was a law made to prevent the assembly of 4 or more persons with sharp knives. And thus, the tip of the knife was required to be rounded so that people could still use a knife with their meal. This prevented much of the killing over arguments at the dinner tables, which - believe it or not, was quite common in those days.

We commonly (at least everyone I've ever met here in Virginia) call these traditional rounded tip dinner knives 'butter knives', even though they are not actually butter knives.

There is a specific knife that is actually called a butter knife and it looks nothing the same.

I wonder what would've happened if they caught her with this at school

And you make it sound like its just a slap on the wrist. Shes ****ing 10 years old. What percentage of 10 year old girls go around stabbing people? She obviously didnt know the rule, and her parents probably let her do it, so she thought it was ok to do so. You dont send a 10 year old to Juvie because she wanted to cut her food. Thats like sending someone to jail for leaving their car parked in the street past midnight. I'd hate to live under your rulership.

Some of you guys don't comprehend well, and then want to yell and insult me.

Juvenile ASSESSMENT Center is not the same thing as a Juvenile DETENTION center.

ASSESSMENT = the act of assessing; appraisal; evaluation.

DETENTION = maintenance of a person in custody or confinement, esp. while awaiting a court decision.

They just talk with the girl, perhaps for a half-hour, with the parent present to evaluate her situation, and, provided the girl has a competent parent, and understands what she has done wrong, is released under the parents supervision. It's standard procedure. If they find out the little bitch is crazy, and has been slaughtering neighborhood pets as of late, for example, then further steps need to be taken.

One time police were called because I had a knife and was acting completely irrational and talking of suicide over a bad break up. The police required me to speak with someone for a psychiatric evaluation. They deemed I was sane, and safe to be released, and I checked myself out. i had the option of getting more help, but I had calmed down and just wanted to go home.

For the record, the girl called me later that night and was apologizing and begging me to get back with her, so I was glad I wasn't dead.

That is ridiculous and entirely false. Have you ever heard of a square-tip? Meat cleaver? Palette knife? Did you know that, traditionally, sailors used blunt-tipped knives? Do you understand that straight-edge razors are one of the oldest and were also one of the most common kinds of knife, and they have a rounded tip? Machete?

This is especially ridiculous, because not only have you failed to tell us where or when this law was passed, but there are also numerous occupations and even countries where the use of sharp knives was customary or essential. Carpentry? Hunting? Cooking? Scotland? Finland? Did you know that in some countries, especially countries where slavery was legal, that the wearing of a sheath-knife or dagger was a symbol of status?

Excuse me, all dinner knives used to be sharp. They were then required, by law, to be rounded. Before then, there were no rounded tip knives at the dinner table. We still have this round tipped knife at almost every dinner table today, and the 'steak' knife, or knife with the pointed tip is a separate tool. Source - National Geographic

I believe it was England. People commonly had a sword by their side, but it was sheathed. The steak knife in their hand could be used to rashly stab someone.

heh, this is the best debate ever. about butter knives and the origins of knives in general.

I don't know much about knives honestly, and I'm sure it's obvious.

I just was watching this 30 minute special on Knives on the National Geographic Channel about 1 or 2 weeks ago. Modern Marvels the show is called.

Hell, let's check YouTube. :)

EDIT;
only found a 1 minute portion of that show:

this thread is now about butter knives: their origins, history, how they are produced and so on.

What the hell? That's incorrect, because the master butter knife is a type of dinner knife, as is the cheese knife, the fruit knife and some dessert knives and they can all have pointed tips. Not only that, but you can actually purchase English-made tipped dinner knives. I think your sourcing is a little suspect, because I can't find anything on this law you keep referring to.

EDIT: You trust Cutco marketing? They're not even English! I don't see how they're relevant. If was some dude from Sheffield yammering about the traditions of cutlery, then I could understand.

haha, bro, I'm talking hundreds of years ago. Did you think I meant that this is current law?

I was being vague because the show just had like 3 sentences about it. I tried to give it verbatim, but I'm going from memory here.
