I just bumped into this study that says 10-15% of kids/teens hear voices that aren't there. (more links) I'm just wondering how many people HERE can confirm having heard voices (or still do).

As a side-note, I always found it mildly strange when people made jokes like, "The voices tell me [something]..." I just never identified with the impulse to say those types of jokes. (to me, it was like making a joke about being possessed, or something. I just... didn't understand what was funny) So, I'm now wondering if maaaaybe some percentage of those people (if not most of them...?) were actually hinting at something, or just thought the jokes were funny because they identified with the underlying subject matter.

Very interesting, either way. I'm going to dig into this more...

I'd have to say no, since the only time I heard a voice was when I was small enough to cry to my mother about it and sleep with her for the night (at that point of my life, games haven't invaded my life) . All I recall was a terrifying loud "HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" continuously growing in volume until I entered my parents room.

wait so is supossed that you dont hear them?

When you say "voices" do you mean like an auditory illusion type of hearing voice or your consciousness telling you things

Cant say I remeber hearing any 'voices in my head' when I was young, or now. Ive used the 'voice in my head was telling me' line, but thats always used as a joke to poke at someone's funny bone, or to be sarcastic.

My nephew used to freak me out a few years ago when he was 4 or 5. He used to, we think, see things that werent there, or we couldnt see.

He would sit at our dinner table, only happened at our house which is why it would freak me out, eating away and then would suddenly quickly look down the hall and stare at it. No facial expression. No tell-tale sign of what he was looking at.

He'd also sometimes quickly get up when watching TV, half run over to the doorway that leads into the hall, lean around it, still inside the living room, and again stare down the hallway. Half hiding his head, as if he was sneaking a peek at something. I'd always see nothing down the hallway, and nobody else would be on that side of the house.

Weird. He's stopped doing it now, but he's 9. Yeah, that would always make me a little uncomfortable in the house when I would see him doing it.

maybe he did that to scare you

"older brother here, lets creep him out*stare at hallway*"

or maybe he is retarded

That freaks me right the **** out right now.

The voices that I hear are telling me to ignore this thread and not reveal their identity, but I didn't listen and now they're going to repeatedly sing until I go crazy.

Just kidding, guys. Ha ha.
Help.

The only voice I hear is mine, inside my head.

I used to wonder if people who spoke a different language thought in English in their heads but spoke in their own languages.

Think I found/find it hard to imagine them knowing what the English equivelant of things like 'the' and 'what' etc are in their own language without knowing English.

Aha, geez I crack myself up...I need help.

I only hear my voice in my head, but it always argues with itself and refers to what I do irl in second person.

Occasionally I do, although it's only really quick mumbles that I never manage to hear. Most of the time it's too low or too quiet to even make out. Sometimes I manage to catch parts of the sentences like a quiet "now" or "here". Usually when it happens I get the sensation that I'm being watched.

Ditto...

Seriously, I'm disturbed by that.

Reminds me of the dream level in Max Payne, where if you fall off of the blood trail you start to here that baby scream louder and louder until the level restarts.

I only died once on that level but I'll never forget how that happens... I made sure to never die at that part again.

Well I'm sure everyone mostly speaks in their native langage in their head.
However for example when I want to say or write something in English, I actually say the sentace or phrase in English in my head first.

I do hear sounds that aren't there, like as if a News Channel is playing in a distance at times(Its very different from imagining it yourself). Or sometimes i hear a word or two out of the blue. Usually the 'words' i hear are never clear crisp words, more like mumbles and wisps of the ends of words when articulated with an 's'.

Other than that, its my usual conscious.

Theres been a handful of times where I am alone and by myself in quiet and I will "hear" a loud and sudden scream. Its not like a long torturous scream, more like a quick, sharp "AH!". Once it I thought it was my mom screaming "SEAN!," which was weird because I hadn't seen either of my parents in months at that point.

Entirely in my head of course, and it ****ing scares me shitless. Its only happened like 3 or 4 times in my life, so im never expecting it. Last time it happened was just after I woke up, as I was just laying comfortably in my bed just spacing out not thinking of anything and having my eyes close. It make me jump a mile when it happened.

Other than that, the only voice I have in my head is my own.

This thread creeps me out :( Seriously I've got a few tears here, that's what happens when I read about stuff like this.

I can remember 2 times in my life where I've heard someone saying something, which sounded quite loud, but I was alone.

Once was when I was very young, maybe 6. I was alone in my parent's room and I heard someone say "Dev" (which is what my family calls me). It sounded like it was said at a rather loud volume by someone in the same room with me.

Another time was maybe less than a year ago, I was in my room on my PC and it was late at night, and I heard something like, not actually a word just a syllable. It was probably just a side effect of being tired. Like how sometimes I'll see movement in the corner of my eye when I'm very tired.

I'm feeling very paranoid right now, like that voice is just an invisible man sitting in my room, waiting for the perfect moment to freak me out again.

:( :( :(

/turns on some music

Even when I know that no one is home, I still think I hear something call my name.

Well come to think of it I've heard a voice call my name, it happened right before getting up in the morning. It's happened only once though.

However speaking of "invisible man in your room" something really strange happened 2 years ago. It happened in the small apartment I'm staying in to go to Uni. I was all alone, playing something on the PC with my headphones on, when all of a sudden it felt like someone whacked me over the headphones. My first thought was that maybe a small piece of the ceiling fell on my head (it's an old building), but nothing. So I stood there with a blank look on my face for a few minutes trying to figure it out.

So there I was browsing HL2net, listening to some music at around 2 A.M. We had just bought this house, and I was the only one here, getting used to the house etc. In between songs I heard something whisper in the door right across the hall. I didn't go and look because I'm a pansy, but I'm pretty sure someone/something is living in this house with us.

I've heard voices a couple times but not under any normal circumstances. i was either high or going through something tramatic

That reminds me, sometimes I'll hear sounds from games after long gaming sessions. Either I'll hear an RL sound as a game sound, or I'll just hear it in my head a lot for no reason.

My sister always claims that things sound like something from Zelda or HL2.

Eh, not really.

There are times (which I'm sure others have had too) when I'm just about to fall asleep, all of a sudden to be disturbed by a very loud noise (in my head, mind you), and be jolte awake. Sometimes its a persons voice.

What? Who's there? I can't make out what you're saying - you're all talking at once - so many voices -

as clear as if I'm actually hearing it through my ears, though there's something distinctly off about how it sounds that immediately signals it as being a trick of mind. If you can imagine what it would feel like to hear something without actually going through the physical steps in the process, completely skipping over each part of the ear and existing

Oh shit that reminds me of the time when I was probably about 10 and up late at night browsing anime fansites and neopets and whatever else I did when I was 10, and I heard a female voice distinctly say, "I can hear you." I looked around and there was no one. No one.
God damnit, **** you.

The only voices I hear, are shades of my own.

I had to come back to this thread because I just heard an incredibly loud "Pssssst" in my ear behind a door. No one is on this floor of the house too.

Eh, not really.

Yeah I get this too sometimes. I don't recall it ever being a person's voice, it's always just like, as if someone is turning up the volume on my ears suddenly.

At times I've heard my name on the wind, but nothing specific. So no.

Man, sometimes I think people are talking to me when they actually aren't. The voices are recognizable. Like my mother or sister, etc. It'll just be something like "Hey, Cory..." (as if someone wanted my attention) and i'll respond "yeah?" and they'll be like "what?". The last time it happened was maybe a month ago. I'm always occupied with some activity when it happens too. I'm on my computer and I hear my mother's voice call for me. It has that echo sound, like it traveled through the hallway into my room. It's the weirdest thing.

Yeah, I also experience this type of thing when I'm about to fall asleep. One moment you're just laying there and the next you hear a tremendous noise that sounds like metal colliding with each other. It's hard to describe because the sound instantly goes away afterwards. I'm not sure if it's ever a voice, though.
