The Official HL2.net Chess Tournament Thread

Heh the final certainly seems very interesting. Keep it up!

Btw solaris can you please arrange a loser round please.

OK, I'm going to try and do the Tournament Rankings again. Let me know if there's any concerns/disagreements. This is all based on the matchups to start the tournament (i.e. 1st seed versus the 14th seed, 2nd seed versus the 13th seed, etc.). Since Round 2 wasn't matched up based on rankings, and Round 3 just handed out to whoever finished the quickest, things are a little incaccurate. Based on what has happened, this is the best I can do...

1. dAnthraxxx
2. JellyWorld
3. BadHat
4. EvilMilk
5. fattony123
6. A True Canadian
7. hl2netchamp (pressure)

...and there you have it. If we end up doing a losers round these rankings could help determine the matchups. In the next few days, the final rankings should be complete and someone will be crowned HALF-LIFE 2.NET CHESS CHAMPION!

:D

very tricky AntiAnto, very tricky indeed

Hehe :)

Seriously, that's one of the best match I've ever played in a long time. I really like how you play.

And by the way if we want to do another chess tournament after this one, it would be wise to start taking the "enrollments" now and then we could begin the pairings. Once again, I strongly suggest this system.

I don't know if I can keep up with all the thinking. I definitely can't play timed matches with any skill at all.

True canadian, we never had seedings to begin with. Where are you getting all these "previously seeded x" from? :s

Good lord you two are good, very interesting stuff.

It's just based on the matchups in Round 1 and the order in which Solaris posted them.

Here's where the first round was anounced: http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showpost.php?p=1948298&postcount=27

dAntraxxx v solaris152 was the first matchup, and in a 1st seed v last seed system, dAntraxxx would be 1st and solaris152 would be 14th.

I wouldn't look too much into it. It's just me attempting to put a little structure into this tournament. Solaris usually ends up disagreeing with me anyway. :p

I think I'm going to try AntiAnto's strategy from now on. Keeping the pawns blocking the outside and funneling the offence down the middle seems to be working really well for him.

Both techniques work. If you do the "triangle" technique then all pawns guard each other so this also can be a good defensive technique. But yes, im experimenting a bit with my open games using AntiAnto's technique. I want to do better next time :p hopefully my low seed will make it easier.

His style has obliterated mine twice now. I want to give up chess forever. :'(

I think it's not so much the style of play as not making stupid moves that would help.

When you play chess more you'll bound to make less and less. Im playing about 5 games at once on the internet at the moment.

Actually quite the opposite. You can guarantee 0 mistakes by not playing any chess at all.

I can also guarantee that your winning percentage will not get worse either. :E

It appears Dan and I could be in another chess battle. Let's see how the AntiAnto strategy works...

you've really weakened your starting position by moving your queen around

Yes, Dan is right. Now he's two half-moves ahead of you A True Canadian. Try to either move your pawns or your knights in order to establish a certain resistance in the center.

I guess I got a little greedy there. :p

OK, recovering my Queen. Let's put some of these other pieces to use...

damn, it looked like it would allow castling after the king had moved. It had showed it as a green move when I considered it before so I thought that for some reason it would allow it, even though I've never played like that before. But then it rejected it when I tried to actually move. I should have taken the trade two turns ago when I could have got out even.

So you can't do castling if you've moved your King? I guess that makes sense.

I think you're in trouble Dan...

:O

Well, you can't castle if you have previously moved your king. I don't know why it appeared like you could do it though.

Well, I only have the positional advantage. One blunder and the outcome are catastrophic for me.

I would have thought you could have finagled a checkmate out of that situation.

Three times now :D
;(

I signed on today and I'm like "WTF, did I timeout?" then I see I made a fatal error. I venture to say my hasty decisions and poorly thought out strategy were the major contributing factors to my defeat.

This is why I continue to say, en guarde! (Or I would if your sessions weren't maxed out)

You can't be invincible forever!
So you can't do castling if you've moved your King? I guess that makes sense.

Looks like most of us are learning new things. Did you know you cannot castle if you have been in check?
I found this out the hard way, a la AntiAnto. :(

Actually, you can't castle if you ARE checked. Once the threat on your King is removed and IF you haven't moved it yet, you can still castle.

And I'll be glad to play against you one more time after I beat the crap out of 15357.

:D

Well, I think you shouldn't have resigned but since it's too late, I have been glad to play against you Dan.

I'd love to get into a game or two, i play chess occasionally. I'm not that great but still. hook me up?

Anyone in general but if you're up for a game now I'd love to play.

**** man, i got totally ran over there. didnt really know what i was doing, i usually pull the trick of managing to put a piece at H7, but it took a whole lot more moves than i was hoping you'd try and checkmate me with.

seriously ace playing on your behalf, that strategy was rock solid alright! :D
