I also tried a girl's name on CS Source.

Surprisingly almost everyone on the server asked me whether I spit or swallow.
 
Many a moon ago I was playing MartixDefense in StarCraft and the first player was sucking a lot, so, naturally, we were all bashing on him.
Well, eventually said person 'admits' to being a girl and suddenly everybody stopped flaming and commenced "e-sexual intercourse" and the like.

Was she really a girl? Maybe, who knows; but what I do is that being a girl would have to suck if you play online as %90 of all players and man-sluts.
I left the game soon after that.
 
If its so bad why do girls always have to make it absolutely clear to everyone that theyre girls?

AFAIK, other females generally wont expose themselves. Whoever does is probably a guy.

Seconded. It annoys me, because all these hugely busty, unrealistic offensively bland female characters just help perpetuate the idea that all gamers are desperate wankers with no prospect of ever finding any kind of sexual solace beyond Lara Croft or whatever.
Very few games have realistic females in them and that's going to drive away many potential girl gamers.
End result: The very perception of gamers never changes - we are stereotyped as sad greasy little tossers, abusing ourselves over skantily-clad computer game characters.
And so the world progresses.

You have to understand though that this kind of situation exists in every entertainment medium. Look at Rap music videos, look at most movies, look at how people advertise products on TV (especially beer commercials). After all "sex sells".
 
Alteast you don't have to worry about looking good for the laydies Bliink, men are much, much, much, much more simpler then women. Just show off your money makers and your set.

But all this nonsense you see in game servers with girls is, well, nonsense. I mean seriously, the only thing different between girls and guys are girls are moodier and have breasts. That's it. Well, all that makes any difference to me, but that's just me.

I'm glad to say i've never gone crazy about a girl being on the internet or playing games. The only female gamers that there are either A) Unattractive in one way or another B) Completely anti-social and therefore near impossible to communicate with in real life or C) Not interested at all. If the rare occasion comes along where D) They are attractive and show interest, then i recommend you go out and buy yourself a lottery ticket right now because man, you've gotta be ****ing lucky today.
 
Screw you guys. I'm gonna go cyber with my online girlfriend. She sends me nekky pics all the time. She is totally a supermodel too and apparently looks very similar to 3 different pornstars.. Its an easy relationship too...all I gotta do is spend 12 hours a day farming enough gold in world of warcraft so she loves me. Its a match made in heaven.

very valid point.
if girls want to play games, they should...if they don't want to be known, nobody forces them to reveal gender...and yeah its probably not the answer ur looking for bliink, but the truth is..we can have this same discussion regarding other forms of entertainment but here we are talking about games when it just as easily could be about movies, music <insert form of entertainment here>

but think about the wide market penetration of movies, music etc. You have female actors, performers and audiences, that are usually around 50%

With games, there are less female developers, far less female players... its a male dominated area, unlike, say TV or music. So the dynamics are of course different
 
I enjoy a wank just as much as the next man, but to get on topic i must say women have near limitless power on the internet. I was in camfrog before in the channel camsturbate and there were 600 guys watching 1 girl fondle herself.

In games i usually reveal my gender. Names are used like TESTICLE-ANNIHALATION, testicular-android. I was also using anal-ass**** for pure shock tactics against my enemies (nothing to do with sexual preference). When we win a round you spam "NOw that was a real ass ****ing" and they feel really pissed off at you. See, you have to get under your opponents skin make take them out of their comfort zone THEN REPEATEDLY PENETRATE THEM.

Though when Crazy-MG-Girl logs on i'm usually the first to start yelling "CRAZY MG GIRL IS A MAN BE CAREFUL."

I'm probably the most annoying in-game person you could ever encounter.
 
yea, i hate when people do that. Today in BF2 i was shooting at a blackhawk, and i go prone to reload, and i see this dudes head pop up over a hill a few feet away, then a missle comes at me, and i die. And he writes, 'Hi.' Although, later (i was blackhawk hunting) i managed to bring down a nearly full blackhawk with him in so i got to write back, 'Sup?'
 
Touching on Bliink's earlier point of how girls make things worse when they make all these "Look at me I'm a girl gamer" things, like all-girl clans and such... I remember Halflife Radio had a girl clan on as a big part of their show... And they were all about "Oh, look at us we are girls and we can be just as good as guys in games!! We play Halo!! We win against guy clans!" And I just said to myself "Wow, good job setting yourself even more apart from male gamers, and creating an even larger problem."
Girls can be stupid sometimes.

Onto other things. I got my younger sister into Halflife. (She is 15) I don't think she'd really be into online RPG's. She likes Halflife because of... Well, I can't exactly explain it. She finds things like the houndeyes "cute", or funny when the AI does weird stuff. She plays excessive amounts of Sven Coop on her computer. This seems to be a good choice because she likes chatting (Sven is a good social based mod) and singleplayer noncompetitive games.

It is quite interesting to see all the "gamer mannerisms" she has adopted as a result of playing so much. One day she doesn't know what lag is, the next she is excitedly telling me "Look how low my ping is!" :)

I don't think she advertises the fact she's a girl at all. Her name isn't girly. (Revolution) Although her model is pink, and she doesn't lie when asked her gender. (AFAIK)

Sven is usually full of more mature people than, say, Counterstrike so I can see why she may be encountering far less annoyances. I've never really asked her, but I imagine she would like the attention anyway.

A funny thing though; every time I would see her play she had a different clan tag in front of her name :p She probably doesn't understand the concept of being in a clan, and just joins any clan that invites her. (I'm guessing lots of clans would like a girl member, so that's why she gets so many invites) I really don't see how clans in Sven Coop work anyway. You can't exactly compete :p
 
When i think 'girl gamer' i think either:

a) Annarchy, from Penny Arcade
b) Maple Story, or Runescape, which are the only two games that any girls i know play.

What's wrong here?

sure they, i don't disagree with however theres only one way to fix that.
the business world is also dominated by males but so what? things are changing :)
change isn't easy...but some times its required for the better of society although gaming might be a ways off when it comes to "the better of society"
 
I know a gamer chick. She's pretty dang good looking. We played Starcraft back in the day. Now she's all about WoW!! Anyway yeah, I know they exist, I've seen a few. Just I wasn't good looking enough to date em :(

some girls in my year have the sims on their laptops but they never really play it much after the initial novelty wears off
don't know one who plays fps or even rpgs (well i don't play the latter so thats understandable)

Oh, of course I understand that, but TV and film, etc are respected (well, more than games), or at least established media.
Games, on the other hand, are still under stereotype of only being played by horny, greasy adolescents with a prediliction for photophobia, whose only interaction with women is skantily-clad, big-breasted "babes" who only exist in the players' screens and smutty fantasies.
And the more characters there are like the ones constantly rolled out again and again and again, the less chance there is of this stereotype being done away with and gaming gaining even an ounce of credibility.
