Time for real feedback on user titles

I'd like to see leet CS labels (afk-noob-camper-cheater-haxor-etc...), either that or custom titles.

Camper? Who will be a camper? :hmph:

The spammers of course. The ones with the real high post counts! Camping the threads...

I agree with badger. Have DM or CSS related ones:
RPG
Stunstick
Crowbar
crap Pistol
good pistol (Magnum)
SMG
Shotgun
Assualt Rifle
Grenade
Slam
Gravity Gun

I think we should implement a proper feudal system:
The top should be Emperor followed by King (or Queen, depending on your gender/sexual orientation), then Lord, then Knight all the way down to Peasant and then Serf.

I am afraid that's me, sir :p

btw, nice idea El Chi ;)

Can't we just have custom user titles for people with over, lets say 227 posts?

Encouraging elitism and spamming :p

Elements all the way ;)

This is UBER-elitism. This is WAY beyond anything that which mere HL2 enemies could inspire.
I think the longer you've been here, the easier it is to climb the ladder, that way we REALLY keep the n00bs off the feudal ladder.

Just to clarify - I'm joking. In a big way.

i think ranking should be how long youve been a member.. tbh.

0-30days -> Newcomer
30days - 3 months -> Still here!
2 years + -> stuck on my pc chair

etc etc...

Oh, I just remembered: check out the weebl forum.
There is a points based system which means you can have a custom user title if you have enough points. Score points by posting good posts i.e. they are ranked + or - by people. It stops the spam thing... oh yeah and if someone chooses a dodgy title, all it takes is a PM from an admin or a stern telling off.

i second your idea. i would just like the sound of "The Duke of Off-Topic"

Here is one that I think is vary fair (and admittedly it'd give me a higher rating than most).

Although it's probably difficult.

Have your ranking depend on your average length of post.

That way people who spam useless things like "use the search" or "shut up noob" to threads won't be rewarded because it'll drag their user rating down by lowering their average. Whereas people who post well-thought out long answers will be rewarded.

I guess the problem with this though is that it's:
1) Probably difficult to incorporate, I don't think this forum software has this sort of thing in it by default
2) Exploitative, people would start quoting entire posts (and quotes of quotes) in order to artificially increase their rankings. Although it would be possible to modify the code to ignore anything within a QUOTE block, I suppose.

The other problem is how do you decide what cut-off points to use to assign rankings.

Pffftt, just give it to people who deserve it.

Like not me.

Ever heard of the phrase quality not quantity? I could literally write the limit of characters for a post of pure bullshit.

I dub thee thus.
I call "Lord Earl of the Lounge and Her Encompassing Territories"

Or "Earl Chi" :| Sorry, couldn't help myself. The Lord Earl of the Lounge and Her Encompassing Territories demands that you forget that section of this current post forthwith! On penalty of torture...

What happens when the user 'Grey' comes along and then becomes Earl? They will be taunted with hot water :(

bwahahaha, that would be really funny

I wouldn't mind having those names :p

Can I keep "the only gay in the village"?

pleeeeese? I'm an idiot.

There can be only one only gay in the village. It's like highlander. But instead of lobbing off each others heads, you swear a vow of silence. And if you break that vow, you lose. So the person who shuts up for the longest period of time, will be the only gay in the village.

Hmmm... Why does everyone's say "member" sans one guy that has a really strange title?

This "Grey" fellow can take the consequences of his name, be turned into a delicious brew and be damn proud of it.

Very well!

I nominate TDE as "Sir Spamsalot"

Are you close to coming to a decition?

Yes, but surely that would be more obvious and easier to catch than the hundreds of useless posts that get generated. If there is a post that's just completely off-topic rambling about nothing, it could easily be deleted.

Whereas something that is 1 sentence but still on-topic, well, why should that get deleted?

I think, if it were possible to implement this, it should hopefully give people a bit more of a reason to write sensible, well-thought out and helpful posts, rather than 1 or 2 line throw-aways like 95% of the forum posts are these days.

That, or everyone would just ignore the ranking system. But even if they ignored it, we'd still see fewer 1 or 2 line throwaway posts because people wouldn't have as much of a reason to be doing them any more.

As for your "quality not quantity" line, that is exactly what I'm wanting: a higher quality of fewer posts, rather than a sprawling mess of spam of pointless posts. I know you were talking about the quality of the words within posts rather than about the quantity of words (as I was), but technologically speaking it's currently impossible to screen posts to see if they are "good quality" right now, so you might as well do the next best thing which is assume that a long post is better than a short post. Because in most cases, they are.
