Troika you f'n screwed the game!

It's definately a good looking RPG, but I expected source engine visuals to be uniform everywhere.

The game runs like a slouch on my system even at 800 x 600 with 2 x AA (equipped with a gig of ram and 9800 pro), as compared to it's drastically awesome looking source cousin HL2, that I'm running at 1280 x 1024 @ 4 xAA and 8 X AF (high settings).

Yeah, this is terribly unoptimized and overall shittily done.
They didn't need the Source engine for this. It's a disgrace, really.

hmm...i was supposed to pickup this game today...but.. i dunno
with all the pple here talking about bugs and crashes to the desktop im having second thoughts..

is it really that buggy? :| :(
i really wanted to play this game..

leave Troika alone. As far as I can tell this is the first game they've ever made in 3D - for their first game in 3D I think they've done rather well in design.

the combat in Arcanum was heavily flawed aswell so I wasn't expecting it to be much better in Vampire and it isn't but its still fun. I spend more time running around talking and doing quests than fighting anyway. Most of the fighting seems to invovle the main story arc - especially near the end.

I haven't had any bugs so far outside of minor graphical occurances and the aforementioned crash bug - which is easily fixed but highly annoying. o_O.

Vampires great! not as many quests as I had expected but theres still plenty.

Playing the different Clans makes quite a difference to the game aswell.

One problem I have with Bloodlines: I don't like the inventory system at all, it involves a round icon in the top of the screen indicating what type of items you are viewing (melee weapons, guns, clothing, inventory) and the items are displayed in boxes below. Very much like weapon selection in HL2 or other FPS games, it doesnt fit at all in an RPG (even Deus Ex's inventory system was better).

Footsteps are bad. Same sounds whatever walking or running... same tap tap tap tap.. thats annoying!
Yup. That's one of the many things that has really been bugging me. Not only is it the same sound even when you are walking (and therefore completely out of synch and much too noisy), but it's actually a pretty bad sound effect in general. Especially when running through the sewers.

I'm gonna pick this game up later this week, so I have to ask: is the game like Deus Ex, or more like Morrowind? Even though just about all my favourite games are RPGs (except HL2 and others), I hated Morrowind, mostly for it's combat, but also for it's story and crappy character creation.
Well Morrowind was probably my favorite RPG ever and one of the best games I've ever played (in fact I still have it installed with both expansions and a bunch of mods), so while it is dissapointing to me, it may sound good to you that I don't think Bloodlines is at all like Morrowind. The comparison to Deus Ex doesnt really hold because Deus Ex was a FPS with RPG elements, while Morrowind and Bloodlines are simply first person (or third person) Role-Playing Games.

But depending on what exactly you didnt like about Morrowind's combat system you'll possibly hate Bloodlines's even more. (In Morrowind for those unawares you had three different attack types with melee weapons depending on the direction you were moving when you click the mouse button.) In Bloodlines you just click the mouse button. There are different animations reminiscent of an action game as if you were executing some sort of combo move, but the affect on your opponent is the same for all I've seen. So I agree with Ben that the combat is horrible.

And how could you possibly say that Morrowind had a bad story?! I've logged probably more than 100 hours in that game and I haven't even beaten the main quest yet! I still find it interesting when I find some new information about the story from a book or character dialog. I seriously think you need to give it another shot.

I have not experianced any of these errors. I play the game at 1280x1024 with fsaa at 4x and af at 8x max details. When you spend 5 years on a games design it tends to look really better than a 2 1/2 year cycle game. Art takes time. The funny thing is it looks better way better than every other rpg currently out there. But yet you chose to say its visuals suck compared to hl2? o_O It's competing with rpg's not hl2.
Well then you are very lucky or more likely not actually playing with 4xAA and 8xAF. I am forced to run the game at 800x600 with "geometry" and "particles" (great job with the graphics settings there Troika) both set to their most minimum and the game still RUN LIKE CRAP. Contrast this with HL2 which I can run with textures on high and all else at medium at 1152x864 and never experience slowdown.

I don't care if they are using an older build of the Source engine or that Troika was obviously not nearly as familiar with it as Valve (which is to be expected). I should be able to either have the game look good and run like shit or look like shit and be playable. To have it look like crap AND run like crap is... well... crap.

Which brings me to my final point which is just that. WTF were they doing licensing the Source engine? Morrowind looks better than Bloodlines, excepting the facial animations. Adding to this, the environment is completely static. that TV? Solid as concrete. The lamp in the corner? Bolted to the ground.

Ugh.

What bugs? People keep saying - Oh it's too buggy yet mention no bugs or they mention things they dislike and say they are bugs!

No one has given any proof yet of bugs. Graphical glitches i'm sure exist - they exist for a lot of people in all games i won't be surprised to find them here.

As an RPG it excells - it isn't an action game with story tacked on it's a story with action elements. The first vampire game had basic combat, anachronox had basic combat the entire final fantasy sereis has basic combat - we're people expecting a military sim?

Now i would be interested in hearing about how you can't solve anything a certain way when it's obvious you should - ie should be able to talk your way out of a random encounter and you have a high intelligence/charisma score etcetera.

The game itself is fun as hell, I love the combat, nothings more fun then smashing into a open, slowing down time and taking out afew people before the first one even lands. The bugs and the lack of video tuneing (meaning you for example HAVE to use 32bit) kill my computer, hope once I get some new ram it will fix it.

All in all, love the game.

it's not perfect, but i'm still having fun with it. I like playing through and seeing how npc react to the different characters i choose to be.

I played a good looking wise talking vampire first, but changed to a fighting one. Now I cant drain people inside clubs
