hey, I have finished my issue of VTM's where I walk people through step by step how to model a berreta 9000. It comes with tutorials on both modelling smooth groups and optamisation.

I currently have them all finished but they are all still 4gb. Obviasly no one is going to download 4gb so I need to compile them to make them smaller. My current file size on compile is around 140/160mb what file size would u be willing to download for 50minutes of footage?

okie, we'll get back to you.

you shuold be able to make them a bit smaller, the techsmith codec can do a good 50 minutes at small 11mb sizes. Though we'll see, broadband users wont mind the larger sizes, dialup users can always DL some tiny QT versions I guess.

I'll run it by Munro

trust me, it is impossible to make a .avi video even visable at 50 minutes long and only 11mb. Maybe 110mb, if u miss typed. There is no way it can be under 40mb without total lack of detail. Remember people need to see what I am doing. Meaning they need to be able to read the text and see all the small points on my geometry.

Make it very high quality so i could put in full screen and tell my friends that this is me making those cool 3d Models :) No seriously 140/180MB for a 50 minutes VTM is pretty good. I will download it that's for sure. :)

80/110mb for me, not that i mind downloading bigger file sizes, just thinking of storage (both on t'internet + home pooters)

Why not take a sample screen shot at various resolutions + post them with their total file size so people can give better responses? (bloody internet, to me that sounds like i'm laying into your questioning style but i'm not lol :))

I'm in a fortunate position where filesize doesn't matter, but seriously, have a look trying the techsmith codec out. It does work really well at getting filesize down without losing much/any detail.

Release multiple versions.
50 MB
80 MB
120 MB

DIVX and XVID seem to be great codecs. You can always experiment. First make it as low quality/low res as possible, but still have it viewable enough to be usable (for lowest files size) then release another 1 or 2 at higher file sizes.

ye, I only ask this because it takes over 1 hours to compile eah VTM, which takes quiet a lot of CPU usage so it means to compile the whole issue I won't be able to use my computer fior like 4/5 hours.

:O

My life is over!

I will get home and make them round about 140/160 and that will be nearly perfect quality. I just needed to make sure people actually didn't mind downloading them. I also need to check with numro because they will be hosted on this site.

I will make a render when I get home.

I'm talking about the techsmith codec, which can do tiny file sizes, Get Camtasia like I originally suggested, it comes with it.

I have it, thats what camtsasia uses to coompile your videos after you have finished (default 100% quality) these are 4gb big. Trust me the only way you can get it under any large file size is to use the windows recroding tool. But that has to use a special program and does not run in windows media player (I don't think) then you can get them like 11mb. But thats the only way. Remember its an .avi atm. I can't change that, well I could. But nothing like change the whole code its programmed in.

You keep saying trust me trust me, you forget I have it and know they can be made smaller. I've also seen another guy, Anry actually, make a 45 minute version at 11mb.

I think I have found it. I am compiling a vtm now and will see how it looks. I was using the Camtasia codec which was like 500mb for 4minutes of footage. I will see if I am using the correct codec now. Sorry to be an ass before, i thought i was right :p

no wait, infact. It took like 6minutes to compile a 4minute vtm and it ended up been 400mb, at least its 200mb smaller than the other :p I must be missing the codec name or something,m but thats the last codec to try which has any relivance to Camtasia

Don't worry about being an ass, your from Leeds, we're all asses up here in Leeds sometimes ;)

A few things you could try

run in 16bit

turn off unneeded audio or effects

use the zoom features

create it at a lower desktop resolution (an alternative to the zoom feature)

compress at the highest compression setting for the techsmith codec, it hasn't for me shown any artifacts or visual errors but does shrink the file size a lot

turn off unneeded visual effects. In a few Softimage tests I found I got a smaller filesize if I turned off the grid than if I left it on. It gives the encoder a lot of empty space thats the same value which means it doesn't have to compress loads of unwanted data.

ye, its all good I have done all that. All the videos are recorded and everything, all I need to do is put them under better compression. The techsmith code makes it 400mb, i can take a screen bump if u like?

this is so anoying now. I have been trying for days to find out what codec to use and they are all crap. I think I am just going to have to go with the XVID codec and just make large file sizes. I really have just lost it on finding a good codec because it takes so long to compile just to find out if its any good.

I'd be willing to do 300mb for 50mins on a broadband connection. A fully backed up DVD (which is legal in uk boys and girls) racks up about 600mb under suitable codecs.. that's at suitable res and sound qual...

Regarding your codecs you can't go far wrong with XVid and if you're not happy- try DivX... Any other codecs for avi encoding would be silly :)

Hey IchI I don't believe that it is 400mb with the Techsmith codec. If you could somehow send me the video, I may be able to compress it a little better.

I have compressed them all now. I used the Xvid codec and got 150mb out of 50minutes with very good quality. So expect the vtms in about 5 days or something. It really does depend how long it takes for me to send them to munro and also him to get them uploaded.

5 days :( well i cant wait to see this vtm... i wanna model some guns.
