whoops double post

To Stern and the others saying that it's a brilliant game, it doesn't deserve such low scores or terrible reviews:

not once did I say the game was brilliant or that it didnt deserve low scores. stop putting words in people's mouths. the comments are stupid,. the people making the comments are stupid (because their comments are stupid) is not the same as saying the game is brilliant. I havent played the game so wouldnt know. try to get your facts straight before you accuse people

I refuse to read the rest of the read as per the risk of having the game spoiled, as per me not having internet at home for days now. So I have a question:

Are all, or most, of the purchase-able cosmetic items also unlockable through normal gameplay?

I want to see what Yahtzee says. If it passes the crucible of ZP then I'll buy it.

Most, yes. For example, you get the heart style flag for completing the Co-op campaign. Or atleast, I did.

Stop reading spoilers! You're not done!

When I looked at what you recently posted it already showed what the spoiler was!! Hahahah, I didn't intend to look for anything to ruin the game hahaha. I am having a great experience with the game though, regardless of my knowledge about the The National song.

ya companies shouldnt be in business to make money they should be in business to make us happy

goddam Mr Christie should give their cookies away for FREE otherwise it's just a blatant money grab

see how stupid this sounds? why doesnt that apply to gaming companies but it does with every other industry

Holy **** you're the third person to pull the IT'S A BUSINESS bullshit.

VALVE WAS FINE BEFORE THIS, THEY MADE A LOT OF MONEY, THEY HAVE STEAM IN FACT AND GET SO MUCH INCOME FROM THAT THEY COULD HAVE PROBABLY RELEASED PORTAL 2 FREE WITH NO DEFICIT

AGAIN, I loved Valve because they managed, at least, to put up the guise that they weren't in it for the money, but for the fans, and they consistently showed that through the Orange Box, Alien Swarm, free Portal, etc. But recently it seems like everything has had a price.

They ARE in business to make us happy. This is a segment of the ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY. Cookies and DLC are pretty far from one another, really. One takes money to produce. The other is digital, and probably one animator doing it in a few hours(I don't really pretend to know about skinning and stuff but from the amount of community members who do it, it can't be terribly difficult).

also did you know that console versions get all the PC DLC free?

An animator... who is being paid for his work. The idea that something has less value because it's digital is a pretty huge fallacy.

That said, I don't really care about this stuff, being all cosmetic, but I don't agree with them charging for it from day one. That's withholding content they had already developed alongside the game, and that's not cool, especially when you're already charging full price for the game.

This very much. I can understand a developer wanting/needing to make money for the content that they create and so paying for DLC stuff is okay(not something that I personally would do). But to create content alongside the game to be sold as DLC that should be included with it anyways is quite absurd and really unacceptable. :|

Portal 2, just the singleplayer campaign alone which is all I've finished, is worth the $50 and then some.

Whoops, my bad. I was on the lookout for someone quoting me. Thanks nicky/doggy :)

Flipping a coin would be just as arbitrary a justification and would be way faster.

I was afraid length was going to be a problem, but it really hasn't been. I've played for five or six sittings and I'm still not done! I'll give my full impressions when I finish... just had say I've been pleasantly surprised.

Played a few hours opening night, got sleepy (damn midnight release), played it more and beat it this night. Avoided anything on the internet with the words Valve or Portal in it during the meantime :)

My experience:
Great game, worth my $40 (single player alone). It's very well optimized for my dated rig, runs smoothly at med/high settings/1680x1050. Story is interesting, dialogue is superb and the best I've heard in a long time. Love the subtle things too like the slow clap by GLaDOS during the fall (lol'd). I like the incorporation of music with actions. My favorite is the bouncy blue gel music. Played some coop too, definitely recommend doing that with a friend with mics and a sense of humor. I hope there's more to be had with Chell and GLaDOS!

So... couldn't one just buy the PS3 version, attach it to one's steam account and have all the DLC on the PC version too?

Nope, I did that and got no DLC on the PC version.

Hats off to Valve. This game runs far better than I could have hoped on my shitty dying laptop with integrated graphics. Someone in there knows how to bloodywell optimize.

I agree, it's just disconcerting to see content released alongside a full-priced game which costs extra. Even if it's silly cosmetic things like this, it gives the player the impression they're not really getting the full package, which isn't really like Valve to do. If they want to release content later on (that isn't just sitting on the disc/download waiting to be activated), they can charge what they like for it, but fencing off content to paying customers like this is a bit of a dick move.

The one thing I do miss are the single player challenge rooms. I loved how difficult they were, and I really miss that difficulty in Portal 2.

It's like saying TF2 has DLC because it constantly gets updated with stuff in the store. It's not normal DLC, which would be maps or an expansion pack of some kind. It's pointless aesthetics which allow people with more free time and money to buy small trinkets to enhance their own in-game appearance.

Yeah. Valve have said they'll add community maps in updates to all four platforms (Xbox users may have to pay for them) so hopefully there'll be some toughies in that.

I dont know why people get so irate about campaign lengths, way I see it, it has infinite replayability. Every game does. People these days seem so fixated on the length, it's almost as if once they've played it through, the disc disintegrates in your drive like something out of Mission Impossible. There is no limit. Factor in the MP co-op and it is however long you make of it.

Look at L4D2. You can play SP or MP. Still played today by loads of people.

Personally on Portal 2 though, I think Valve have dropped the ball on their marketing. I didnt even realise Portal 2 was coming out this month until I saw a review on Gametrailers and thought ''wtf? It's almost or already out now?'' Maybe that's just me not looking enough, but I think it was me not caring enough too. Valve have been far too quiet these days, then suddenly something springs up out of nowhere, then dissappears equally as quickly.

And if I dont hear something about EP3/HL3 this year, I'm burning Valve's HQ to the ground.

To be fair in TF2 it's not PURELY aesthetics, you can also get quicker and easier access to higher-level weapons and equipment, no?

They're (mostly) sidegrade weapons, not upgrades. All of them except one offers some sort of disadvantage with its advantage and generally force you to be more specialised, eg the Heavy has a minigun with increased damage but which slows him down even further while he's firing. Each class has three weapons that can be earned through achievements and all other weapons can be found randomly or crafted from the other weapons (or trader for with another player). All items that affect gameplay can be found by random drop or crafted (both of these systems existed before the store did).

But yes, someone who's new to the game can just buy all the weapons (it would cost a fair amount of money to do so) straight away while those who do not wish to use the store would have to take longer (though there are 27 items easily available by doing the achievements, which can also all be gotten instantly on certain servers if you like).

Yeah, and you can't deny that that is a gameplay advantage in the sense that you can immediately get access to a wider selection of equipment that allows you to more custom-tailor your character to your play-style.

I don't mean to bash Valve or anything, I'm just saying it is incorrect to say that it is purely aesthetic differences.

Yes this is true. I wasn't trying to suggest otherwise. But I really don't think it's a huge deal. People who pay get the items faster but it's not like a new player is going to instantly know which items suit him best. He's going to need to play around with them to see which ones suit best and there are 27 weapons out there waiting to be unlocked by pretty simple achievements (except maybe the Medic ones) and while you're learning those weapons you'll be getting other new weapons in drops too.

Now I don't think it's a perfect system, in fact I think it could do with a major overhaul, but I don't think the problem is massive or that it lies in the store. The real problem is the drop system being really arbitrary, but for new players this doesn't matter as every weapon they find will be new and for more experienced players then they should have amounted a decent amount of duplicate weapons which they can start crafting to finish off the holes in their collections.

idk man, I've seen commercials on the television for Portal 2 several times over the past couple weeks. But I'm with you on the Ep3/HL3, I'm starting to get skeptical that another HL installment is even in development

Yeah there has been Portal 2 commercials going often on Swedish TV as well lately.

Unless you're brain damaged, there's this thing called memory. Maybe you've heard of this phenomenon?

Portal 2 sucks. First of all it was released a few hours earlier than advertised. That is warning sign #1 that Valve are liars. Secondly my friend owns an Xbox 360 and he bought portal 2. That is PROOF this is a console port. Lastly the SP is about 2-3 times longer than portal 1 with an additional COOP more about 2 times long as Portal with several new gameplay features. By my wise gaming experience (I have been playing games since COD Black Ops) that tells me Portal 2 should have been FREE DLC... maybe $5 but that is testing my fury and thousands of others who will unite under me and lay flame to the internet.

Did I miss anything?:E

80 Dollars is ****ing high for extra crap. I only played Portal 1 and didn't like it really. I disliked Valve when they puit ads in 1.6 counter-strike. Bring back the World Opponent Network!.

Portal 2 was shit. I'm sorry. They built SO much hype around it, for what? I finished SP in 6 hours. Co-op absolutely BLOWS without a good partner. Ive completely lost interest. Sorry Valve, I love you but you MEGA-FAIL'd here.

You're lying. You aren't sorry at all.

For sales.

I finished SP in 6 hours.
So what? We've already established that length is a piece of shit indicator of value and only morons use it as the sole evaluator. If you have any real criticisms, by all means share them, otherwise I'll just think you're being a typical butthurt 10 year old who just spent his whole month's allowance on a game that he mislead himself into thinking would be something other than it was.

Co-op absolutely BLOWS without a good partner.
Yeah, and driving on the highway absolutely BLOWS without good drivers. I'm sorry Connecticut construction workers, I love you, but you MEGA-FAIL'd here.

See what I did?

Is your enjoyment of candy non-existent because the sensation of pleasure is so fleeting? Is this why you no longer masturbate!?

Portal 2 was amazing. Best 6 hours of gameplay that I've played in the past year.
