ITT we discuss your all time favorite Bioshock moment(s):

I have to say my all time favorite moment of the game was completing Cohen's "masterpiece" It's been a long time since I've been really blown away by immersion and narrative in an FPS game and that entire sequence just left my jaw on the floor. It reminded me heavily of System Shock 2 so it's no wonder these guys did it again. Killing the necessary actors and adding the pictures seemed like something straight out of a psychological horror flick - coupled with Cohen's dramatic appearance and the big daddy / splicer fight. And the little things like the spotlight that follows you around while he barks his artistic snobbery at you.

So what's your favorite Bioshock moment?

Working with Cohen is amazing.

But Ryan... one of the best scenes in any game I've played, honestly. It's both expected and surprising.

I would have preferred to have had more control of the Ryan situation, though I know that wouldn't make sense given the context of the plot. I just hate not being control of my own character in an FPS game D:

I suppose that adds to the unsettling feeling of the sequence though

The Ryan scene. Also, the good ending was touching.
As well, the audio tapes just before the Ryan scene.
"Strange the dog! Wring his neck.."
"-crying- No.. NO! YOU SICK BASTARD!"
"Strangle the dog.. Would you kidnly?
"No.. NO!!"
-Dog yelping-

Yes definately the two afformentioned scenes were fantastic. Cohens moreso, because after that I shot him point blank in the face. Both scene left my mouth hanging open.

Although, the scariest scenes in Bioshock were when you first met the Houdini splicer (beginning of Arcadia) and another personal experience of mine.

I was in some sort of water logged area, and I caught a glimpse of something running across the screen, down a hallway. I turned down the dead-end hallway, only to find nothing but a vault. After hacking it and looting it, I turned around to find a doctor/thuggish splicer staring me straight in the face, eyes WIDE OPEN. He lets out a scream and starts attacking me. Ten minutes after that encounter and my heart was still pounding.

Definitely the "would you kindly" bit. Me: Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck :|

Also, if we're talking about random occurences (if not, sorry), I just had a pretty LOL moment the other day. I'm walking through a corridor tracking a houdini splicer when he appears behind me. Before I can turn around he's already appeared, shot off a few fireballs and vanished again. I turn back around to advance down the corridor and realise one of his fireballs has hit an oil spot and set it alight - which he then TELEPORTS INTO and burns to death :E :E

Didn't fire a single shot. Got some pretty amusing photos, though :) (so wish there was an album)

So is the game worth getting?
YES! Stop spoiling it for yourself and go grab a copy :p

I think the first encounter with the plaster Spider Splicers in Fort Frolic has got to be one of the scariest things I've ever encountered in a game. The man in the corner, the flickering light and then the woman statue standing behind you when you leave the upgrade station. After that, when more of them start arriving is when I just want to get out of Fort Frolic as fast as I can, because the plastered/cement Spider Splicers scare the hell out of me. For starters they make NO noise what so ever, and they don't have the same skins of the normal human Spider Splicer models, they've got the really stretched/skull/dead skins you often see as corpses. I was playing today and they started coming out of ****ing NOWHERE, I literally could not turn my back on a big open space because one of them would be behind me.

Notable scenes go to the shadow in the funeral home, and the encounter with the dentist, both in the Medical Pavillion.

Oh, oh! Also, when you first get the shotgun, again in the Medical Pavillion. Ultimate 'ohshit ohshitohshitohshitohshitshitshitSHIT!' moment right there.

Haha, the shotgun bit was AWESOME. Great scripting there.

Meeting Ryan and when you beat the boss.

Definitely the entirety of Fort Frolic. That whole area of the game was the scariest for me. When you first enter the large, open main area, I felt extremely vulnerable because of how many different directions you could take, as well as the whole "insane artist gone bad" bit.

Overall, the small one-time splicer interactions with each other, such as right in the beginning when you enter a bar, and downstairs a wife has locked out her husband and they argue continuously. It sounded so genuine and creepy.

heh yeah they were all awesome, but whats the shadow in the funeral home bit? i agree with the plaster splicers, the one in the basement sitting in the corner like you mention, also the big room that you get to in fort frolic nearby that scene, the one with the signpost ''more goodies downstairs'' or sumit like that..

when i picked up the upgrade there and turned around i noticed that the clothes racks had all become plaster splicers standing posing, i nearly shat myself when i turned around to that. The whole Fort Frolic chapter was amazing, i decided to blow Cohen away at the end of it :p

also my first introduction to the houdini splicer when he appeared right behind me in arcadia, when i turned around and saw him in my face, eek...

the dr.steiner battle was also pretty creepy.

In the Medical Pavillion, theres a place to in the main entrance room called [something] Homes Funeral somethingoranother. I know that's not helpful but it's on the left hand side of the room, the door just before the archway to 'Eternal Flame' where that lady is banging on the door and then gets blown away by a Nitro splicer.

I think the creepiest part about the 'more goodies down here' room was how the room was really big and eerily lit, and the splicers don't actually sneak up on you or attack you where you are, they're just... there, standing motionless. What would of been really ****ing creepy is if the lights were to be flickering and with every short burst of light they got closer.

I jumped on the safe and shocked the water, anyway. :p

yeah i totally panicked when they charged me, i immediately used electro shock while i tried to jump on the window ledge so i wouldn't shock myself but couldnt get up on it.

there was one room i never got into in the game because i forgot to go back to it, it was in the med paviliion, it was at the end of a flooded hallway in the dentist area but i didnt have the dentist's key, i always checked the map when i was leaving an area to make sure i had explored all areas but thats one room i want to get into now on my 2nd runthrough

Telekinisis, friend. ;) Go back to the rooms that are locked and have a little look around, you'll see...

"A man chooses! A slave obeys!" Such an awesome scene.

I did have a really cool personal experience using cyclone trap, as well. It was in Olympus Heights, standing on one of the streets facing an alcove, and this thuggish splicer comes charging at me. I lay a trap down and he skyrockets...but he doesn't come down where he should have. I looked up just in time to watch him falling outside the sealed dome. He got into the water somehow. Me and my friend started busting up when it happened, and I kept repeating, "I don't know how he got out there, I don't wanna know! All I know is that it's awesome; I don't wanna know, I don't want to think about it."

My favourite moments were probably mostly had in Fort Frolic. I loved Cohen's introduction and the scene where Fitzpatrick dies on the piano was superb.

Having said that I couldn't get down to the section with 'More items downstairs' ;( How do you get there? I explored all of Poseidon Plaza and couldn't find a way to get rid of the grille.

The dentist made me jump out of my skin, and the shadow just scared me shitless.

What happens when you first get the shotgun though? I don't remember that scene. I hope I didn't miss that area and pick it up somewhere else.

to open the grill you need to go into a store to the north with a plaster splicer lying dead on a table in it, behind the counter is a switch, hit it and it opens up the basement in this room (where there is a plaster splicer sitting on a chair in the corner, get to the upgrade station and then cue much pants wetting :p) BUT also appears to remove the grill outside too.

the shotgun is on the ground floor of the med pavillion around the dentist area, when you pick it up the lights blow out/go off and very dramatic/intensifying music begins to play and 3-4 leadheads charge you from different directions, its hard to see them since there is only a small area of light to fight in.

Damn, missed that switch. Something to catch next time, thanks.

Ah, now I remember that. A great part, no doubt.

Go into the room directly opposite that grille. As I recall it's a slightly flooded, long room. Anyway, behind the bar in that room is a switch. Activate it and it'll open a door in that room plus the downstairs grille. :)

You get mugged by about a dozen splicers. Intense.

My favorite moment would be first seeing the interaction between a Big Daddy and Little Sister, just watching them go about their business.

And that scene where Ryan blows up the submarine that had Atlas's 'family' in it, gave me a holy shit feeling.

Cohen walking down the stairs just blew me away. Superb.

The submarine scene didn't do anything for me, because it was so obvious.

when you first met the Houdini splicer (beginning of Arcadia)
One of the scariest moments in videogaming for me--turning around after looking at the Wicker-Man-ish mask on the table and staring that creepy f*cker right in the face and then he vanishes. Gads that was well-done.

All aforementioned moments are great. But in terms of sheer tension, walking down the tunnel to the sub, presumably to finally meet Atlas, was utterly exhaustingly nervewracking for me. The way it played out didn't live up to my tension of course, but I won't slight the buildup.

Fort Frolic.
A frantic red-tinted fight with splicers in bunny masks all to the tune of Waltz of the Flowers.

I absolutely loved it.

Best bit for me was the first Houdini Splicer. I thought it was some sort of ghost and couldn't hurt me. Or a boss for later OR something like the... Bollix what were they called in SS2. The Many Super Brain ones where ya had to kill a brain stem before they could permanently die.

I spent about 10 minutes burning the masks around the place and any greenery as everytime I took a shot at the Houdini he would vanish and seemed totally unable to hit me. One lucky fireball broke me out of that revere and I finally wounded him :)

Fort Frolic was definitely the most enjoyable part of the game.

QFT. Playing through that sequence convinced me the game was a work of art.

When I first got to fort frolic, I didn't quite figure out what the plaster coated people were everywhere, I figured they were statues. When I whacked one and blood went everywhere, my jaw dropped and I said "holy shit" out loud.
All of fort frolic was awesome.

My sincere favorite scene was when you walk (or jump, maybe) into that one room and the first thing you see are photographs and headshots of people with the words covering them, in blood, "Would You Kindly". Also later on with Ryan's monologue about how powerful the phrase is, you have that kind of flashback of all the times Atlas had said that phrase. It gives you a small insight on what is really going on.

Arcadia

when the guy was calling for help, you went looking for him. i turned against a desk or something, a light turned on, and i could see his shadow. i turned around and e said something really scary.

my favorite moment is when you meet Ryan.

this.

I thought it was a really clever twist, the way they went about it.
though I'm still not entirely sure I get why Ryan being in control of you simply gives up so easily.

and also as acepilot says the Suschong tape with the puppy scene gave me chills and is one of the most memorable audio logs in the game.

in general I really like all of suschong's tapes...he's such a character.

uh...they actually do exactly this. I don't know if you have to do anything in particular to trigger it or maybe it's only on hard difficulty.

but anyways when I was first in "Spirits"liquor-store where you find the switch there's a single mumified splicer...when you go to pickup some loot or audio tape she will all of the sudden stand right behind you, still frozen.

it gave me a good shock...then I realized after having watched her a couple of seconds "oh it's just one of those gimmicks"....then I got another shock when she suddenly attacked me.... same things happens in the huge flooded room....

it's worth noting that after that encounter you will then regularly encounter mumified spider splicers(or maybe a set number? if I remember correctly in the big room there are several mummy splicers...but they all seem to dissappear except one attacking me....maybe those are the ones I encountered later spread out over fort frolic)....these splicers are much tougher than the regular ones, and they will also attack the normal splicers(and I think perhaps even big daddies)....as a bonus since they're mummified with their mouths covered...they are completely stealthy they won't chatter to give away their position and I think they don't make footsteps sounds either....so ****ers will be able to sneak up on you all the time...so unless you want this aditional challenge to deal with I suggest that you first trigger this event when you're about to leave fort frolic.

Andrew Ryan's introduction to the city, with the whale.

The scene in Ryan's office.

Pablo Navarro's audio log about Kyburz.

oh, they do? that's cool, then. but yeah the rest of this post is also exactly right and also how i feel about that level, though i also wasn't aware they attack others and big daddies. the scariest thing about the end of that level is that there's not really anyone around but you as you're about to leave.

at one point some of them do disappear from the atrium, but it's only when you go into the room with the goodies that they then start creeping up behind you. i remember on my second or third playthrough forgetting this and then hottailing it from the goodies room as fast i could knowing that something was chasing me.

those things were creepy.

Sander Cohen was unbeatable, the entire level was perfectly designed, detailed and paced. The sense of place and atmosphere was unlike anything Ive ever experienced in a game to date, and I cant see anyone topping it.

But the Fitzpatrick scene on the piano was my favourite part of the entire game.

You dont do anything other than walk toward him down the aile, but its Cohen's singing as he plays that makes me laugh and cower at his control.

'Mr Cohen, please!'
'Silence! Allegro, allegro! Da da da da da da daaaaa, presto! PRESTO! No! No!'
'I'm trying, please!'
'Once again young Fitzpatrick! Da da da da da daaaa! NO!'
'Oh god let me go you sick ***k!'

I also loved the scene with Steinman the surgeon when he's behind the glass infront of you operating/digging his blades into the woman.

'What can I do with this one? She WON't *stab*..STAY *stab*...STILL! *stab*. I want to make them beautiful but they always come out UGLY! That one *spotlight*...too fat! This one *spotlight*...too tall! And this one *spotlight*...too symetrical! Whats this? An intruder? He is UGLY! UGLY! UUUUGGGGLLLYYY!!! *opens fire*

Yeah, some of the best scripting ever. Though I've yet to try out Mass Effect 2...

I'd have to say in the first: working with Cohen
The second: Working with Eleanor.
