Go into hl2 folder find save folder and open make the 4 folders with auto save in them read only(right click/properties) Dont forget to quicksave ;)

I have made a autoexec.cfg file but it is not being read. I have noticed that under properties it is a text file and not a CFG file but I can't change this. What am I doing wrong?

Making save files read only should improve things somewhat.The stutter should be a lot smaller (hardly noticeable)

Yeh, It is bad news.I was going for a 5900xt until I heard about HL2 problems.On the bright side, I have run my 9800pro in dx8.1 and there is not much difference to my eyes,only the water.

I have disabled AutoSave and this has reduced stutter somewhat. Now only a "nanosecond" stutter instead of a full blown Ggggg..GGGGGrrra...Granville episode. :)

I have a 9800 pro 128 meg and can only run in medium. I have tried a 4200ti 64 meg which can only run in low settings at about the same frame rate. If i raise the settings I start to get bad stutter when sounds load. I think that HL2 is much like Doom3 in respect to its detail levels...

Valve definately know of the problems.Locash was online well into the early hours of launch day with "several other guys still in the office" trying to sort out innitial problems. Gabe has been on hlfallout since launch. my bet is a patch will be out by early next week at the lattest.

Try adding snd_async_fullyasync 1 into the console. This does seem to smooth things out a bit but you may get sync faults in when 2 characters are talking to you(they might try and talk at the same time) This came from a Valve programmer (locash) on another forum. It might help until a...

Same for me. I have 768 ddr and hard drive is going mental all the time(defragging as I write this) sound seems to be the main culprit. Any ideas anyone?

Just out of interest, how old is everybody? I am 36 and have been playing games since Super Mario on the NES.Am I one of the oldest...(I hope not :D ) The last game to get me excited as this was Mario 64. I think HL2 is going to be better than that.
