A review on Silent Hunter III

Wow, very cool Loke! I'd like to see more pics. I'm thinking really hard about picking this one up in stead of Brothers in Arms. My rig exceeds the minimum requirements altho not by a lot. It's an AMD 1800+ @ 1.53 ghz with 768MB and a Radeon Sapphire 9600 Atlantis w/ 256MB.

Glad you liked them. :)

Ok, here are some more.

Your own personal bed!

The deck gun on the boat, pretty worthless in comparison with the torpedoes. :)

Rig for red!

sh21.jpg

Poor brits... ;(

Oh shit... A Battleship!

The Battleship going down after a haaard fight.

This thread should be renamed "A review on Silent Hunter III *56K Warning!!!!*".

Hehehe, great, keep 'em coming! Let those 56k-modems suffer!

Hehe, that's all I have for now though. I can grab some more tomorrow if you want. :)

That would be great. I am heading off to bed now before I submerge under my desk .....

*Looks around*

Oh! Oh! I wanna post my screenshots! Oh!

is this game noob friendly,i like the look and idea of it but i'm not a big simulation game fan,its looks like it has insane replay value which is good,i dont mind learning as i go as i never played a rts when i got commandos 2 but ended up loving it

lol Loke, your story board screen shots are great... seems your torpedoes are detonating, mine still arnt. on 2 patrols now... all my torpedoes just went 'dunk' on the ships hull and fell to the bottom of the sea... all at various distances too :( I have got realistic torps on though... so hopefully as the war progresses the torps will get better. Unless im doing something very wrong.

could someone post some pics of the coasts as i read in the review that loke posted that the guy sailed up to porstmouth and there was factories/buildings etc, does this go for most places or are the coastlines just ugly greeny blobs

the graphics really look good although the vid size is tiny, are the graphics good?does the game support aa and af?i heard the res only goes to 1024/768 :(

Yes, it's very nice. Very detailed.

does the game support aa and af?

Not in the options menu, but I heard you can "force" the game to use it. Haven't tried it yet though.

i heard the res only goes to 1024/768 :(

Yep that’s true, quite a shame. :(

My only big complaint on this game is that the loading times are quite long, and plus the lack of changing resolution in the game.
But apart from that it's a very good game. :)

any more reviews for the game except the ign and subsim 1?does increasing your heapsize decrease load times?

also what can you do in first person when in the sub?i heard you could walk around etc?anything else?

do you get resupplied by other u boats?

are there many other u-boats around?can you 'wolfpack' it?

can you be the sonar man and recreate those tense depth charged moments from das boot?

wow i just watched the trailer,it was great, think i'll get this, loved it when they spotted the battleship and quicky jumped back down, closing the hatch and hearing the 'ding ding ding',good stuff, loke could you answer my questions in my edit above pls?maybe you missed it

check my edit biatch ;),

:afro:

You can jump around in different locations in the sub, like the commander room, radio room, command deck etc.
You don't really walk in the sub, rather teleport but it's a cool feeling anyway because it really feels like you are in a boat, you can see your crewmen get afraid when a Destroyer depth charges you etc.

do you get resupplied by other u boats?

There aren't any other u-boats (NPC), but I heard that they will add other NPC u-boats in a patch later on including other stuff.

are there many other u-boats around?can you 'wolfpack' it?

See above.
However there is multiplayer in this game so you can play with other people in other u-boats in co-op.

can you be the sonar man and recreate those tense depth charged moments from das boot?

Yep. :)

Nope...

I just remembered now that I was supposed to take pictures for him... dang, sorry Shakermaker. :(
I'll try to take some tomorrow.

You cannot walk around really. It's more like a fixed camera within each compartment thing. You look around and click on whatever you need (map, sonar, bed) and then you move to that spot/compartment. If you want to go to the conning tower for example, you look toward the conning tower hatch and click on it and you'll move to the conning tower. This might sound kinda sucky in text, but it works really well IMO because 1) there just is not enough room on a u-boat to have the typical W-A-S-D movement (you'd constantly run into pipes, people, hatches, etc.) and 2) it helps you quickly and efficeintly move from compartment to compartment without much confusion. (Time is critical when you're being tracked by a destroyer, you know?)

Unfortunately, AI controlled uboats are not in the single player game. AI "wolfpacks" are in the level editor however, and a number of mods are in the works. Also, you can go on multiplayer and form a "wolfpack" with other real people and "hunt" that way.

Yes.

Edit: Oops, too slow. Nice timing there Loke. :p

Just finished another 3 hour patrol in a new boat :D now got a deck gun and flak gun, loads more torpedoes. This game kicks ass, i cant wait until they add submarines... i'd love to come up against a British sub :cheese:

The games so good, once its loaded up I have to finish the patrol and sink sink sink everything in sight :D it's hard to press Exit... too much fun.

I am a noob sims player.

My last real sim was the Flight Simulator on my Apple IIc. That was before the Mac even existed: 1983.

Installing now, I'll check back later ....
