A review on Silent Hunter III

Would it be a better idea to start in 1941 instead of 1939 btw? That MkII sub isn't worth a lot: a total of 5 torpedos and a lousy flak-gun.

I'm currently playing at 1941 in the career, and it's pretty good.

How many patrols have you guys made so far in the career?

I'm on my 8'th patrol now, and a total of around 56 000 tonnage sunken. :)
lol i had to load my 1st patrol from a save point after my "incident"

still on it at the moment, sunk 1 ship, lone merchant, heading up to my patrol grid now, have you run into any large conveys loke or even better a battle formation? :naughty:

I ran into a small convoy (two large C2 cargo ships) once, surprising they didn't have any escort by a destroyer.

i've heard that in career mode there are very few chances to come across a battle formation, you know with lots of battleships etc,i know targeting merchants is what the uboats did but i'd like a chance to go up against the big boys

just on my second patrol, heading for an52,right by the english coast, just ran into a lone merchant at night,i usually target them on the surface but should i dive and follow them or not?i mean they have no escort or defence so it doesnt really matter if they see me right?

i keep reloading my saves after i miss as the torps in 39 are hard to come by,had a lot of duds so far... :(

Probably around 1943-1945 there are more Destroyers out in the sea as the U-boats during 43-45 suffered major looses.
But I’m playing at 41 still so I don’t really know.

You can, if you want, disable dud-torpedoes in the realism options, so every torpedo you fire at a boat always explode.

nah i dont mind dud torps, plus im only on 29% realism so i dont want to go lower,i've reloaded the part i described earlier 10 times now and still he wont die :frown: ,but if i miss with torp i usually reload my save so thats why its taken so long

sunk the bugger, just followed him on the surface then moved to a 90 degree and he basically just sailed into my path, first 1 hit directly,2nd=deflected.3rd=deflected,4th=success....split down the middle, poor bugger creaked and screamed all the way to the bottom,i slowly drifted away into the night :(

I've let them see me before, if you are closish to the coast... a plane will come out to meet you, the best way to deal with planes without a flak is to go flank speed away :D

Damn I want this game. If only I had money.

But can I ask, is this one of those games where you find yourself totally immersed and you sit infront of the PC playing it for hours? I haven't played a game like that since Morrowind. :) I've got a lot of time to waste now hehe, Hopefully I'll be able to scrounge up some money over the weekend.

For me, yes. For you? I have no idea.

Since I can just pull some short stints due to social life, work, etc. I tried a single mission tonight. Those are a lot of fun. I picked one where you had to sink a couple of carriers guarded by a big military fleet. A short recap of the action:

Early morning, of the coast of Malta, an armada of Allied warships is steaming east, blisfully unaware of my presence. I'm the captain of the first type XXI on its maiden voyage. There's a veteran crew aboard that's eager for some action on this brand new sub.
We rig for silent running and dive deep to avoid attention. I've set a course that will put us in the path of the main objective of this mission: the battle carrier Illustrious. There is a sense of uneasyness aboard, because everyone knows that as soon as we start our attack run, our stealth will be gone and the enemy will be on us like a pack of hungry wolves.
"Wahnsinnige Fahrt voraus!" I give the order to dive to periscope depth PDQ and position myself behind the attack periscope. With waves half obscuring my view I spot the Illustrious dead ahead, steaming towards my position. Its still about 1400 meters away, so we've hit the surface a little too soon.
Anxiously watching the distance to our target getting smaller a destroyer is pinging like mad and rushing to get to our position. It's not fast enough though and I give the order to launch the first torpedo. It seems to go long of it's target, so I make a sharp 60 degree turn to my port side and launch my second and third torpedo.
The destroyer is almost above us so I give the order to dive to 120 meters double time. A muffled explosion and the ship shudders. Depth charges! More noise. The aft torpedo chamber is damaged. Just what we need! I dispatch a repair team to deal with it.
I give the order for an 180 to get away from the destroyer. With F12 (it feels like cheating so I use it as little as possible) I turn to the surface to see the result of our attack. We've hit the bullseye! The carrier is slowly rolling on it's side, with the crew quickly evacuating before it turns over.
In hindsight that's where it went wrong. We should have stayed at a safe depth and sneak away from the destroyer. But no, I spot another carrier and try to target it with my aft torpedos. Quick action: raise periscope, adjust heading, ready aft torpedo. Then another loud bang, an explosion followed by water, lots of water. The bastard destroyer rammed us .....

So JiMmEh, if you still didn't get it by now: it's totally immersive, buy it now!

EDIT I added two screenies for your enjoyment.

well ive never played a sim game in my life and love this, its very difficult(although totally scaleable) at times and can be frustrating but i love it,i havent played any other game since i got this, the career mode im told gets rather repetitive after awhile, you do spend alot of time just sailing lifeless oceans but you can increase the time compression,it helps though that the game looks very nice, its quite cheap too and has lots of replay value, just remember to put your favs mp3s on the gramophone

hehe i think i tried that mission too, sunk 2 ships and then while at periscope depth i looked around to see a giant destroyer heading directly for my periscope,he smashed it,the glass broke(cool) and the flak gun fell off,i decided to suicide it,rose to surface, jumped in the deck gun and started firing like mad ejit :sniper:

Have you played any other missions that are worthwile?

gibraltar i think and bismarck but i only just saw what the mission was like, didnt really play it,the career is the meat of the game for me,if i get bored of that i'll give the single missions a go

YES just had my best patrol so far and im not even done yet,on my 3rd patrol, sank 3 ships,1 c2 cargo with 2 torps,a coastal merchant with 1 torp and even better another c2 with 1 torp,i love this game!!still have 1 torp left so im gona patrol until i find something,my main patrol is over,im now 4th in the uboat aces....YAY

I've found a great site for music to put in your grammophone-folder.

linky

Downloading Messervy's Grammophone packs now (5 in total). That's over 100MB of original, WWII music. My wife hates it (and to be fair to her: half of it is real Nazi-music), but it's great for the immersion so I'm loving it. I'll prolly be playing SHIII with my headset on from now on .....

yeah i got it,i posted a link already, gets annoying after awhile

Well jimbo118, do you like the game? I see you posting about it but the words "awsome", "great", and "fantastic" never seem to come up much.

you obviously havent read much

just finished that 3rd patrol i mentioned, got another ship so that was 2 c2s and 2 medium coastal merchants with 5 torps, best patrol yet,got 3 medals and 1 promotion too for that week or so's work

Finally finished my first patrol. We had horrendous weather almost all the way, so we've lost a couple of contacts. We did manage to sink one C2 tho, that was about 6700 tons. Then again, it's only september 8th so we've got over 5 and a half years of war to go. ;)

weathers been fine 4 me so far,had a storm on the 1st patrol when sailing back but thats it,on my 5th patrol now,got the type vii uboat finally,in 1940 now,i was awarded the iron cross, second class,at the moment im patrolling an18 which is directly south of scapa flow,2 battleships are chasing me at the moment so the game has got alot harder, once i finish this patrol im gona head 4 scapa

I've got medals up to iron cross with leaves, cant remember which leaves. but they are leaves :p Sunk loads, thinking of putting the realism up abit but the games good fun on 29%, there's no way im calculating torpedo solutions myself :O

lol so true,i gave my torp man 3 medals so far and my sonar man,my sonar mans experience is miles ahead of any of the other sailors, these battleships are tough bastards, trying to sneak away from them,as a general rule should you engage battleships or just avoid them and look 4 merchants?

Never would I have bought a sub sim on my own. Thanks to this thread though I gave it a shot. I couldn't have been happier with my choice. This game is awesome. I never thought I would say that about a sub sim.

Has anyone tryed 100% relistic yet? Oh sweet jesus its... sweet. I mean you need to be a hardcore sim fan and know what you're doing but my gawd, its so...realistic. :bounce:

Always play my sims like that. ;)

Even tho sub sims aren't my thing (modern combat flight), I may just try it out. :)

Speaking of Sims, I want an original Falcon 4.0 :(

Thinking of re-installing Jane's F/A-18... :D

so today after 4 days at sea i headed back to scapa flow(6th patrol) and guess what i found, only the bloody Illustrious cruiser,i had been there the before on the same patrol but nothing to be found,so i decided to save my game as once i sunk this giant i'd personally meet hitler himself,so i come back later and my save has been erased  ,all that avoiding battlecruisers for nothing,i know have to go back to my 5th patrol and start again :(

Ouch!!! That really sucks. I've had some save-game funkiness as well. I loaded one game and I was 20 m underwater but I had a full lookout group on the bridge. I couldn't remove them and they weren't drowning. It was my first bug that I ran into. Great game regardless.

Have you guys patched your game to 1.1 yet? Sounds like the problems you're having are solved by it.

I just did the stupidest thing. I was returning to Wilhelmshaven after a succesful patrol (small merchant, C2 and a destroyer sunk; I'm in a type IID mind you). I was going "wahnsinnige Fahrt voraus", but coz I wasn't paying proper attention I smashed head-on into a dock. Boat destroyed. My men will hate me for this; now they have to do that patrol again ....

me 3 everyone does it...well us idiots who use time compression :rolling:

You can't not play the game without time compression, otherwise you might aswell, leave it running while you're at work, asleep etc because nothing will happen :p

Yeah, those people are crazy. I read a story on the Subsim-forums about a guy that is playing with no time compression since the release. Very funny.
