A review on Silent Hunter III

Be aware tho. There are some complaints on the Subsim-boards. But then again: there are always complaints about patches ....
good bump, i havent played sh3 in awhile. any major additions with this patch?

The changelog:

• Now external camera is linked to the U-boat using “,” and “.”
• New order for Chief Engineer - Periscope depth
• Torpedo tube ready message and voice is now active
• View to heading order implemented using key “-“
• Head to view order implemented using key “=”
• Fixes a bug where the oxygen was not replenished using snorkel
• Fixes some bugs to dials in command and sonar room that display wrong information
• A new advance plotting mode is available (thanks to Akifumi ”Jiim” Nojima)
• Fixed a bug to the waypoint plotting system
• The crush depth for all submarines has been corrected
• Submarine damage model has been improved
• Now Liverpool and Firth of Clyde are in the correct position
• T II torpedo range bas been corrected
• Type XXI torpedo loading speed had been corrected
• More radio messages from BdU had been added
• Escorts ASW attack methods have been improved
• Escorts spawning issue was solved. Now the convoys will be better protected.
• Navigation tutorial issue solved: there are no more sudden explosions on boats
• Gramophone issue was solved: it will be available now while the in-game music was switched OFF.
• Side of the detected ships is no longer revealed by radar or sonar
• UZO view by night was improved
• N-Vidia workaround was improved. First time when the user (with N-Vidia) uses UZO the spray bug will appear. If the user uses Ctrl+P that option will be stored in the main.cfg file and will not be necessary to switch off again that particle system (cause the main.cfg will be updated). The Ctrl+P now is linked only with the particle system from the sub so the other particles in the game will not be affected. When you will exit to free camera or any other view the particle system from the sub will be automatically restarted and the player will not have any issues related to it. After this the player can enter/exit UZO station without any other worries about Ctrl+P.
We didn't make this ON by default because there are the users of ATI cards that have no need of this workaround.
The N-Vidia users can also add in the main.cfg in video section, this line:
HideParticlesNearView=Yes;
• Un-checking the event camera in video settings now disables it regardless of the setting in the realism menu. The "no event camera" option in that menu is grayed out to reflect this.

- More radio messages from BdU had been added
thank god, i was sick of the 'be more aggresive' and good work messages.

Same here. There were only three kinds of messages:
Be more agressive
Keep up the good work
Return to base.
You'd imagine admiral Dönitz would have a bigger vocabulary ...

*jim reads uninstalled, stares blankly mouth open for a few seconds* :O

uninstalled, it...it... cant be.

ah no jkn, good luck with your exams, i havent played in awhile either.

According to Ubi "all captains should return to base" after installing the patch, meaning you can't load an in-mission save coz otherwise the game will crash.

Jesus, I'm drunk. It took me at least two minutes to write that sentence ...

It doesn't really matter as long as you load an in-harbour save. And don't laugh at me; being drunk is a serious matter .....

I drunk beer too. what beer did you drink... Carlsberg? ;)
I had guiness, 6 pints... and my tummy hurts :( I hate lots of egg sandwiches too, i think they've done it.

jimbo118 said:
no way, this thread will never end with us 3 still here.

No, I meant to say that I finished the thread in the off topic forum. This thread is holy. It's by far the longest running thread in the games forum and it's about the best game of 2005 so far. I'm still gratefull to Loke for introducing me to Silent Hunter III.

I've sent you a pm

oh.. Amsterdam isn't in Denmark is it? :D i forgot Carlsberg is Danish.. maybe. Anywho, the game deserves such a huge thread and i am so so glad they're bringing out all these patches.

The Devs rock to do that, so many games dont get the sort of attention and love this game has had after release :)

I assume they are saving enemy subs for an expansion, which, i guess, is fair enough :) Got enought to contend with, let alone enemy subs, no idea how you'd attack them with such limited topedo depths etc.

Aren't they moving straight to Silent Hunter IV? It's planned release is Q1 '06. I'm guessing they'll just polish up the engine a bit and concentrate on a different theatre of war. I am very much hoping it will be about the Pacific sub war. I want to be an American sub captain and sink Nip ships.

yeah sounds good, oldagerockers original point was too about the devs releasing the patches.

btw shaker have you tried any of the mods for the game or sp missions?

Yeah, the support for SHIII is very good, I agree.

The only mods I've tried are graphical: better clouds, better moon, etc. I'm trying Beery's Real U-boot mod as soon as my new computer arrives (which will be in around a week, yay!). I've heard good things about that mod on the Subsim-boards.

whats the moon mod you have?

The original moon isn't exactly round. It looks a bit like the Death Star. There are a couple of high res replacements around. There's also a real death star, hehehe.

any chance of a link, i was on subsims mod page but only found this:

"Moon Phases - Sun rise and set times for 1939 to 1945 by Andy Pratt Remember to adjust for time zone in regard to your position on the map - All times in the doc are UT GMT Zulu"

I've mailed it to you.

EDIT Read the read-me for how to install it.

I hope number 4 is modern sub warfare... that'd f**king rule, aslong as it wasnt too easy... I guess the difficulty from this game comes from the limits you have with old technology.

A cold war scenario would be pretty cool as well. Keep it free form but tell the story thru radio messages and maybe a couple of scripted missions. I'd love some sub-to-sub warfare. Dangerous Waters is actually a bit like that but altho it's a pretty new release, the graphics aren't as good as SHIII. And I've heared that the manual is about 400 pages; it's not as noob-friendly as Silent Hunter.

a bump for Foxtrot. Start by reading the review, mentioned in the first post.

btw where the hell has loke gone? i havent seen him in ages.
