haha go go go, get that convoy... i found a HUGE convoy near ireland once... and it had no backup at all... problem was, i only had 2 fish left from taking out lone c2's (and missing) :(

So i took as many as possible with my last remaining fish and deck gun shells and then i had to leave them, and head back to base :(
it was so sad.... i could have taken atleast half the convoy if i had a full array of torps with me!

Bugger! Altho the C2 was barely moving, an eel was wasted because of faulty maneuvering. Since it would be a shame to waste another, I've let the deckgun go rip on both ships. The sea is like a mirror so that was a walk in the park. 8400 tons but a bitter taste in my mouth. On to the patrol grid! We still have 832 kms to go.

Yeah, that's pretty cool, Jimbo! The game deserves it tho; it's a gem.

Brest is the most western port in France, on the tip of Britany. I've added a screenshot.

I'm on my 12th patrol now. I've winged a couple tho, could've done better. I found one convoy but it was ahead of me and steadily sailing away. Couldn't catch up with it.
you didnt answer my question,is brest the 1 that doesnt allow time compression or is that lorient?

The U48's first encounter with a convoy! 3 hits: one coastal merchant sunk, a C2 and a T2 damaged. That C2 had it's cargo exploding, so maybe I'll get awarded another kill later on. A V&W destroyer was lurking around so after my second attack run I decided to dissapear into the deep. I still have some patrolling to do.

That's L'Orient. In Brest, you have to make a hard starboard as soon after you start, but then you can just set a course and cruise away with TC@256 (my usual cruising compression).

Scheisse, I found a very tough coastal merchant with a lot of luck in my patrol area. The Schweinhund took a direct hit and still managed to pull 5 knots. The weather's too rough for the deckgun, so I tried an aft-shot, but that was a dud, verdammt nog mal. I want to leave some ammo for the way back, so I'll leave him be.

Wein, weib und gesang! We're back in Brest again. We've had a fairly quiet trip back. Besides a small run in with a C-class destroyer, it was unevenful. It was a good patrol with the convoy and all, but I am a bit dissapointed about my tonnage sunk: 10.789. The good thing tho is that my grand total is now 102.917 after 12 missions.

EDIT Yay! 700th post! nice one

Yeah, I 'm not an ace yet. I'm gonna play the whole campaign tho, so I still have about 4-and-a-half years to go.

I've immediately avenged myself. On my next patrol, also near Ireland, I found another convoy. This time around there was no escort, so I had fun like a fox in a chicken farm. The result speaks for itself (see attachment).

ok thankies

Shaker what realism settings do you play on?
I've got realistic everything except the TDC targeting and ship spotting stuff.

What Flotilla do you have to be in to get to Brest?

Another tip about convoys:
I never took a real hard look at the map you get with the game. As it turns out both convoys I encountered were spot-on, if you check the convoy-routes. Keep an eye on the time-period tho. Not all convoy-routes are used throughout the war.

I've got realism at 47%. No manual targeting, map updates, non-realistic damage, etc. I'll up the ante when I'm better.

I started and still am with the 1st flotilla. Late july 1940 I got transfered from Wilhelmshaven to Brest automatically.

Oh right, kool. I havent looked at the map yet :) I transfered to 7th Flotilla to get the UIIC boat... do you know if there's a better one than this in the game? :O it's pretty damn good.

The VIIc's underwater performance is actually inferior to the VIIb. That's because it was a bit longer, but had the same engine. The VIIc/41 and VIIc/42 however are improved versions that out-perform the VIIb.

But there are a lot more subs. There's the IX-series with a longer range and more storage room for torpedo's. It has the disadvantage of being big (easy to spot) and not as maneuverable as the VII series. You can reach the Caribean with it tho .... The type XXI is the sub to rule 'em all, but it enters the war fairly late.

It's all in the manual ;)

Started patrol 14 with 57% realism. That's everything on, except manual targeting, map updates and free camera. That went pretty well. Got a bit seasick tho, coz of non-stabilising, hehehe.

haha i'd have to keep the stabalising camera on... i do actually get sea sick :p

do you think the games too easy Shaker? I remember being depth charged to hell in Aces of the Deep... im sure this is alittle easy so far, i'm about the same year in the campaign as you.

Now I've got the hang of things is pretty easy blowing single ships out of the water. Tonight I've mastered the deck-gun (I'm a way better shot than my gunner), so it was like a walk in the park. I sunk about 35.000 tons and I didn't even find a convoy. These are the U-Boot happy days. It's gonna get a lot tougher in 1942 when the US enters the war. That'll mean more and heavier escorts. Blowing an entire convoy out fo the water like you can do now, will be over an done with then.

Ah ha, didnt think of that... the big ol' US destroyers :(
I've only found 1 convoy so far!! they're rare atm... had one on the radio but i never caught up with it, i couldnt find it, being in what seemed to be pernament heavy fog and rain for days didnt help :p

Quick question, when it says "Radio Message Received" how do I check the radio message to see what it says? I'm at the end of navigation exam, all primary objectives complete, I've surfaced and stopped the boat, still nothing and I bet the message on what to do to complete the mission is in the radio message... How do you check them?

press 'm'

Thanks :)

Wierd, all it says is "Surface your U-Boat" which I've done... How do you complete the Navigation Exam? I have all primary objectives done, and I'm surfaced... Do I have to like head back to a port or something? If so, how can i find where it is?

Of course. It got 5/5 stars.

With 8 reviews online Silent Hunter III now scores 91.4 on Gamerankings.com. Officially, a title needs at least 10 reviews in the database before it is placed into the overall rankings. But I checked and the number 1 for 2005 atm is SplinterCell3 with a score of .... 91.1. So two more reviews with a plus 9.1 score and it's officially the best game of Q1 2005. The way things are looking now Battlefield 2 better be damn good, or Shakermaker's 2005 GOTY Award goes to SHIII.

I'm installing this sucker now, hopefully it'll run on my crappy Compaq Presario...

IT works! Although it looks terrible. The wake just appears as a square behind my uboat, and for whatever reeason, the texture for the bridge is missing, and sometimes random lights explode all over the place, oh yeah, my crew is green too. Great fun though, just finished my first patrol.

lol ! atleast its working... what did the detection utility say? Its in the start menu.
its a great game, however the graphics are, i'd still love it. Shame you cant play it at the max though.

Im apparently missing some ps1 thing or another, I'm on a different computer right now, I'll check it out in the campaign. I cant wait to slowly built up to 100% realism...calculating torp shots and everything...

yeah the lights exploding is a load up bug i believe, when i load up my game i hear them smash and come back on again,it's a bug

The happy days are over. I'm in february 1941 now, and the bigger cargo's have guns now. I included a screenshot.

I can't get enough of it. I play some BF:V and some HL2:DM once and a while, but for the rest it's SHIII all the way.
