Sure. This is the link to the SHIII-forums of subsim.com. I have the same username there, as I have on these forums.

I don't have a clue of the exact place of that thread. I'd try searching for "no time compression".

There's even a more elaborate thread by another guy. Great reading.
thats the only 1 i could find,is it a big thread,ie more than 1 page?

Especially the first post of that thread is very long and very funny. I'm at work now so I can't really devote time to scrolling through the subsim-forum, so I'll have a good and hard look later tonight. I'll keep u posted.

How do you accurately fire torpedos? Not the manual way, getting the crew to do it, all mine seem to miss...

And whats the range have to be before a torpedo arms herself??

The range is more than 300m, although the torpedoes are sometimes dud anyway... especially at the start of the war, thats the risk you take with them :)

A prefered firing distance is below 1000m from the target, although if you think the shop wont spot you, chance course or speed... then fire at about 2000. a decent distance imo :)

Oldagerocker is right: launching your torpedos between 2000 and 1000 meter will give you the best chances on a hit without getting detected. Keep a good eye on your battle map (F7) while you're on your attack run. That's where you can see what path your torps will need to travel in order to get a hit. And do make sure that you don't launch any torps when the target indicator in your attack periscope (F3) is orange or yellow; it has to be green.

Oh, and Jimbo: I couldn't find that thread about the guy who's playing with no time compression on.

Just a little test ....

EDIT And it works. Strange .....

On-topic: I wish I was at home playing SHIII, in stead of working.

hehe,i'm just loading sh3 up,oh how i love college holidays, time to sink the Illustrious,oh yeah sh3 is number 2 over at gs pc games most popular.wootage

Christ, didnt realise how popular this game was! My dad bought it a few days ago, he said as its a submarine game its quite slow and I wouldnt like it, mostly in an attempt to keep the game all for himself heh. Cant run it because our graphics card is too old, so we're finally getting a new one!!

lol yeah 12 pages on a sim game in a fps site

Finally I am the proud owner of a type VIIB U-boot. The crew of the U48 and me are very happy with her. We've just started our maiden voyage with this beauty, and we're especially happy with 17 knot max speed and longer range. Her torp reserves aren't half bad either. My new avatar is her sailing towards the sunset.

The only problem i have with it, is the crashing when you alt tab... if it was alt-tabbable... i could cruise along at 1x, enjoying the views and post about it/find stats/chat in msn at the same time. But i guess that'd break the immersion factor. :(

That's strange. I don't have a super-rig at all, but I can go to the desktop by hitting the Windows-button on my keyboard, and the game keeps running dandy. My specs:
AMD Athlon 1800+ @ 1.53 ghz
768MB
Sapphire Radeon 9600 Atlantis w/ 256MB

The type VIIB rocks. The deckgun makes life so much easier. Having trouble sinking a C2? Just fire a couple of salvo's and it's gone. Great effects too.

yep once i run outa of torps i've used for battleships i just cruise around looking for merchants with the deck gun,you can really rack up the kills

I'll try with the windows key then... alt tabbng crashes everytime. Might just be my pc though...

Nah, shouldn't be. Your PC is better than mine in every aspect.

This deserves another post. I found a very cool site: Uboat.net. There you can look up the real stories about the sub you're commanding. I'm in the U-48 now, and according to the site, it's ....
The U-boat which later became the most successful submarine of the war.

YAY!!!!!

Another cool quote about the captain commanding the U-48:
Shultze's first patrol in September 1939 was successful, resulting in three ships sunk for a total of 14,777 tons. During this patrol he became famous for the radio message he sent in plain language after sinking the Firby on 11 September:

"cq - cq- cq - transmit to Mr. Churchill. I have sunk the British steamer "Firby". Posit 59.40 North and 13.50 West. Save the crew, if you please.
German submarine."

well i made it,finally, back to scapa,so far i've sunk 3 ships on my 6th patrol on my way there,a 4th ship that detected me in scapa sunk itself,it was weird,it was miles away and i just heard 'yeah' from the crew and that music,i checked the map and saw he had run aground, lol, didnt get the tonnage mind

neway, planes have been all over my ass the whole way,but i found the b*stard, the Illustrious fleet cruiser, the biggest ship in the game i think,a monster,i've saved thankfully it didnt erase, around it there is so many auxillery cruisers, weather is fine too, clear but rough seas to hide my periscope, last time it was foggy, couldnt see a thing

i have 7 torps left,4 bow,3 stern,that should be enough i hope,i'll report back 2morrow with an update

Hey Jimbo, there's another guy on the subsim.net-forums posting about a 1TC trip. Here's the link.

Me neither. My wife would sue for divorce, my social life would seize to exist, and my cats would prolly leave me too.

Besides, I like time compression too much to not use it ....

Not yet. I'm too involved with my campaign to try. Today I finally finished my dry spell. My 8th mission resulted in zero tonnage. I checked out early, exiting the patrol coz I'd done what I had to do (couldn't be bothered to go all the way back to Wilhelmshaven). The 9th mission I finished a couple of minutes ago was way better. I was hoping for a patrol-grid near Dunkirk (it was the beginning of june 1940, at the heighth of the evacuation), but in stead I was sent to some of the beaten track patrol grid south-west from Scapa. The weather was horrendous all the way (typical Brittish), so I couldn't use my deckgun at all. Big ass destroyers were patrolling everywhere, but they never caught a glimpse of me. I still managed to sink a small merchant, a C2 and a C3 (about 17.000 tons). Not a great mission but since I'm back in business again I ain't complaining.

no you have to go to scapa flow from january 10 1940 i think, enter from the west side and you should spot it,its absolutely huge!

For your entertainment, I will keep a log of my mission tonight.

Ah Brest. The girls, the wine, the food. It's so lovely there. The U48 must be on it's way tho; the crew and me are on it's first, proper mission in the Atlantic. We've been assigned a patrol-grid to the north-west of Ireland. Seems like a milk-run ....

Almost 24 hours after we've left port, we've had our first contact. A stationary ship. Nobody onboard has ever encountered that before. Checking it out.

EDIT A coastal merchant and a C2, just hanging around. Maybe it's an assembly area for a convoy?

is brest the port that doesnt allow time compression to sail out of it?what patrol are you on?im just starting my 7th,also have you found many conveys?

ps:isnt it cool how long we've kept this thread going?

Bugger! Altho the C2 was barely moving, an eel was wasted because of faulty maneuvering. Since it would be a shame to waste another, I've let the deckgun go rip on both ships. The sea is like a mirror so that was a walk in the park. 8400 tons but a bitter taste in my mouth. On to the patrol grid! We still have 832 kms to go.

Yeah, that's pretty cool, Jimbo! The game deserves it tho; it's a gem.

Brest is the most western port in France, on the tip of Britany. I've added a screenshot.

I'm on my 12th patrol now. I've winged a couple tho, could've done better. I found one convoy but it was ahead of me and steadily sailing away. Couldn't catch up with it.
