First impressions
All the server trouble didn't really make it easy, but I managed to get a game going twice tonight. When there is no lag, this is truly a great game. I have some minor quibbles like no prone, no (active) voice comms and the weapons not feeling entirely right yet, but that aside it is a very worthy successor to BF2.
The sound is indeed one of the best features of the game. At one point while playing on defense I was attacking in force with tanks and other infantry while Warthogs flew overhead, pounding the enemy with their Gatling gun. The noise accompanying that spectacle was so incredibly awesome.
I also enjoyed the new game mode a lot. During my last game I was on offense and we managed to push all the way through to the end. The gradual opening up of the map and the focus it brings, pushing the team forward in stead of all directions like BF2, really is a big improvement imo. It sorta reminded me of Dustbowl in a way, only with more points to capture.
Technically the game seems pretty sound, although this is a Battlefield game so it isn't bug free. Unfocused mentioned the artifacts, there is the crashing server browser and of course the lag (which hopefully is due alone to the overloaded servers). Other than that I was surprised at how smooth the game runs. My settings are halfway between medium and high, and the game runs pretty much without a hitch, even in the middle of intense combat situations.
We really should plan to play together this weekend. Going offense with two or three HL2.net squads working together should offer lots of awesome experiences.
Oh and @Unfocused: behold my sucky k/d ratio.
