Building comp., lots of help needed.

Can we at least make some decisions on a power supply or fans? I at least need to keep this thread alive until the wonderous moment that I can finally put these into an account.

Well, a power supply is gonna take a chunk of cash because of the power required for this machine. I really don't feel like looking through this whole thread for the parts you've selected -- could you list them? Even if you're not decided, post the parts you're partly sure you've going to get so I could make an educated guess on the PS.

Yeah, I can get em' all together. I want my machine to be nice and healthy, so the power supply could be at least $200 or something.

Alright, here's the stuff I think I'm settled on:

Motherboard

Processor (though I still don't know if we're settled on this or one of those dual core things)

RAM

Drive 1

Drive 2 (thank you, sinkoman)

I think that's it so far. Fans, power supply, case.

This was actually a case I had my eye on, but we'll get to that once we've decided on some nice fans and a power supply.

Nice list of parts you have there (476GB of storage, holy shit).

For the processor, I'd stick with what you have there. Dual-core isn't going to totally needed for a good 3 years now, but who knows. AMD's 64 processors overclock really well even with stock cooling, so you could probably get that up to 3.0GHz for at least close to it.

For the power supply (trying not to be a brand-whore, but Antec has some really nice PS's), get maybe this, or this. SeaSonic also has some fabulous PS's, so consider this too.

One comment on the case: it looks fugly, in my opinion, but the case looks is up the the buyer. For fans for that case, it truely doesn't matter what fans you pick, in most instances. I'm not sure if you want neons or not since there's no clear side-panel. I can't recommend any fan sizes (80mm or 120mm) because I'm on dial-up for the weekend and really don't feel like waiting 20 minutes to examine the pcitures.

Hope I've helped.
:D

Heh heh, what's the norm for storage capacity?

I'll check out the power supplies you listed, and it's been said earlier that I'm not going to overclock. I may in future, depending on me learning how and if I would dare try it; I think the parts themselves will hold me for a while anyway :D

If I decide on one of those power supplies, I'm still clueless on fans.

Edit: I think I'll go with that first Antec. Everything sounds awesome except for one of the reviews that said it busted, taking three other parts along with it. They were expensive parts, too. I hope that doesn't happen to me. He was probably doing something wrong, anyway.

There's no "norm" but, to me, that capacity is insane, but to each his own.

Fans are universal, to an extent. The two main sizes for case fans are 80mm fans and 120mm fans. 80mm are smaller and move less air (less cooling), while 120mm moves more air. Most quality cases have a mixture of 80mm fan spaces and 120mm fan spaces. For the system you have listed, 3 or 4 80mm would be fine BUT your case has to allow so many fans. The Asus website doesn't have that much info on that case and by mearly looking at pictures can throw you off.

Neon fans are just normal fans but with pretty lights inside 'em, like this.

Another cooling route is to go water cooled but I SERIOUSLY doubt that this is the route for you.

I'd say if you can, stick to 12cm fans as they are quieter and will move more air than 8cm fans. I personally don't like the neon/led fans that glow, but if you do then there is a good market out there for that sort of thing.

When it comes to powersupplies, the big brands that I know of are Tagen, Enermax, OCX and Akasa. There are more, but I can't think of them. The enermax 600w noisetaker is meant to be a great stable quiet psu. Should check out some benchmarks, I remember seeing one on Tomshardware where 20 odd psus were tested for effeciency, output, noise, stability, value for money etc so it was a good test.

-damnit, I clicked accidentally clicked a button and it went to my homepage, so now I have to write the post all over again-

Thanks, I think I'm good with the power supply Q_onfused mentioned. If they will keep my computer cooler, I'll take 120mm fans. The neon oes look cool, and would be especially so in the dark, but I don't think I would pay much attention to them; they might even begin to annoy me, so I don't think I should get them.

How about one of those Thermaltake cases?

I know that some cases can be biger than others and, of course, if one I got was too small I would get rid of it and order a new one. But what if your case is bigger than your computer? Is it still ok to keep it inside it?

Well, generally a bigger case is better, because the more room that there is in there means for better circulation. As I said, the type of fan(s) you need DEPEND on your case. If your case only has slots for 80mm fans, you can't put a 120mm fan in there.

In order for me to really show you, I'd need Photoshop (photo editing program) but I don't have that on this machine. I'll be back home late tomarrow. I'll try and post some edited pictures to show you want I mean.

I know what photoshop is, and that would be cool.

We havn't got any definate info on the new cards from ATI yet, have we? I just remembered that earlier someone said that I should know what video card I'm getting before I decide on a power unit. Do you think that Antec will do fine with whatever I pick?

Hey, and what about a sound card?

Could either get something like an audigy 2 zs or you could look into getting one of the new creative x-fi sound cards that were recently released.

Also, I had led fans in my case and they just began to annoy me too, so I bought akasa amber fans, which are very quiet and don't glow so they are pretty cool.

Akasa Amber? I'll check that out after I finish this, as well as those x-fi sound cards. Thanks.

Is Akasa Amber a brand? I didn't see it on the list.

Heh heh, yes Q_onfused. Thank you for that. :D

That was a case that I linked to, right? I probably won't even end up getting that. It looks too sealed off and big. Plus, I'd like a case that can support 120mm. fans.

Ehhhh... what say you guys on these?

I don't know what to think with fans.

Looks like its a good quiet fan. As one of the reviewers on that page said, it would be good as either an intake or an exhaust fan, not for your cpu. Have you thought about what sort of cpu cooler you are going to use? I recommend this one link.

I have that hsf and I have turned the fan right down so you can't hear it at all, and yet it still cools my cpu to 28degrees C at idle and about 38 to 40 under load so its pretty efficient while being completely silent!

Well, if you say it's good, I'll try it. But it is on Newegg? It would be easier to manage.

Heh, Danny, you're kinda like me... wanna keep it all on one site! :D

About CPU coolers (not anything against them), but I find that the stock ones that they come with (especially AMD's A64 line) are just fine. However, if you want to overclock a bunch, a 3rd party CPU cooler is the way to go.

I won't overclock until future, but I still want it to be cooled nicely.

Are there any more fans I need for specific parts? Or is it just case?

Well, there's fans/heatsinks for just about everything: there's some for video cards, RAM, CPU's, and cases. The only NEEDED fans are for cases... everything else is just for overclocking.

P.S. Danny, I was in your shoes about a year ago... total noob (said lightly, of course), didn't know a lot about PC's... trust me, this path is worth it. I built mine in about a day; it doesn't actually take a day, but spead it out over a day. Overall, I'd say it takes... oh, an hour or two if ya wanna be careful. And putting a PC together isn't hard at all, it's just like a jigsaw puzzle... one parts will only go in one place.

Once you have your PC up and running, you'll feel sooo proud of yourself.

I was planning on building it myself (with a little third-party help :)), I'll get that cpu fan, and mabye a few more if I want my comp. to be cooler. Thank you, Q_onfused, you're a good guy.

Anyhow, I read some reviews, and people say this is good for gaming. Will it fit into my... mobo?

Thanks... :) I always like to help...

About that card, if you're going to get it, be sure to get some quality headphones or speakers (whichever you plan to use). If you buy a $120 sound card and have shitty speakers, well, you're putting money into a hole.

Also, I don't think any sound card can be justifiably priced at $120, unless it's the new sound-processor (which is $300 [ouch]) or it gives me head and/or does the dishes. The Turtle Beach sound cards are a very good buy, and Creative is also a good buy (have one in my system, now) but that card you posted, I think, is way over-priced.

A head-giving sound card would be pretty sweet, wouldn't it?

Well, if it will give awesome sound in my games, then I have no problem paying it. I was planning on getting one of those multi-speaker set things so I could have really great sounding surround soundedness.

Thank God, I got my account, and am currently adding the parts to my cart :D

Whne I want to order one of them, what do I do? Move it to the wishlist?

You add what you want to buy to your cart and then go through the steps... pretty simple. You'll have to enter a CC number and mailing address, if you haven't done so already. Then it'll day a day or two for them to process it, a day to package it, and a couple days to ship (depending on what shipping plan you chose).

Make sure not to order on a weekend, because they don't operate on weekends.

And you couldn't shell out a couple more for a sound card?

Once I get through those steps, yes I them on my account which, obviously, has my mailing address, and I'm guessing it will ask for my credit card number when I order it...?

Nifty; thanks. I've actually decided that I'm going to have a little stock built up bit by bit until it's enough to buy all the parts at once. I got the mobo, processor, RAM, the two drives, and the power supply, and so far it's added up to about $1350.

I'll consult those little guide lines once I'm ready. As for now, goodnight. Meh needs teh rest for skule.

Any how, sound card. Should I pick a different one if the one I linked is really too expensive? Because seriously, I'm going to get one of those multi speaker sets, so if it will supply awesome sound through them, I want to get it.

It doesn't really matter. If you have the money, go for it.

usually intigrated sounds fine if its 8 channel sound card but its your choice if u want to get a sound card i would recommend a audigy 2 or if u shell out some more get the xfi card they are both made by creative

Ok, well it's 1:30 (in the morning) here in Texas; I got on quick to check new posts before I went to bed, so tommorow I'll check out the audigy 2's and xfi cards. Thanks.

Hey, I just got on to look, and some say PCI interface and some say USB interface. Will only one of them fit with the parts I have?
