Comprehensive Look At Direct X10, LongHorn, And Palladium!

To carry out all those dasterdly plans for Longhorn would likely result in the absolute crash and burn of Microsoft. Who in their right mind would put up with that? (Other than people on AOL :D)
I'm sure Microsoft knows this, and wouldn't be stupid enough to go through with it. And if they are, who cares? Be nice to see them humbled a bit.
Edit: I get lots of legal things off of Kazaa. (Think odd recordings and stuff that isn't even for sale.)

True, but I reckon they will produce more LE when they realize not all people can afford the full version.

Newly realesed uber-popular-everyone-wants-it demos maybe?

Kazaa is a good alternative when all the download servers you know of are too busy.

just remember, if we all get screwed by MS....

A. A diehard warez-er will blow up microsoft places around the world while eating a pie.

B. We all get PSI technology in our heads and ditch computers

C. We all eat pie while our fingers burn

lol the irony....

see...you're trying to avoid another monopoly-in-the-making.

the whole gamespy/ign merger will mean the release of more "exclusive" demos and the like...and then microsoft will prevent you from getting around the exclusivity by screwing you in other ways

=====================

i dunno if i'm the only one, but i see microsoft's plan.

A: introduce a great set of developer's tools (directx)
B: make those tools indispensible to PC game creation and play.
C: release a version of directx that only works on an operating system that is basically a giant anti-piracy platform.

that way, if you want to play the new games, you have to play them on the uber anti-piracy OS.

=====================

honestly, i think piracy is a protest to the high cost of software. then software companies claim that they need to have high priced software because of piracy...

a good ol' catch-22.

microsoft is attempting to keep profits high by cutting into piracy (and freedoms as well :\ )

normal (not rich or students) people who can't afford all this crap are trying to use all these wonderful programs while still being able to eat and pay for electricity and computer parts.

the thing is, most markets are controlled by consumers...if they like things, they'll buy them. if a design is crappy, they won't buy it.
but microsoft and the PC world is unique. soooooo many people use windows that you can't get around having compatibility with it. and in almost every case, you just end up using windows (as a developer).

========================

if the games industry wants to stop this kind of crap, they should start developing lots of titles for the mac. if mac had lots of games (and a 2 button mouse please!), i'd switch over just to avoid microsoft.

of course i'd only switch if palladium-type stuff was becoming commonplace.

i'd definitely be up for violent protests if this whole palladium plan becomes reality. sign me up for the bombing campaign/guerilla war.

Macs are soo goddamn expensive though (I use them, I've been tempted on occasion to get one for home).

Read through most of this thread, I have to say, if MS goes through with the whole thing, death to them.

Anyhow, as for WINE running Steam, sure, it can run HL, but only because it supports OpenGL. Once we get to say, HL², WINE won't be able to run it since DirectX is a MS API and HL² won't run.

Regarding the comment about XP being able to be installed only on 2 machines, complete crap. That's ONLY if you register it. You can skip the registration and it'll never bother you about it again. Ever. No cracks needed.

Kazaa.. legal software? lol :) I'd agree with you if you were talking about BitTorrent, seeing as how alot of legally distributable software goes out on sites such as FileRush, but in general, kazaa is 95% illegal software.

Anyhow, we'll see what happens.. then I'll move to linux, too, or stick with XP or something.

30 DAY ACTIVATION! You HAVE To Register! Unless you plan on reformating every month.

its funny how easy to see who the pirates are on this forum. they stick out like a sore thumb trying to justify themselves.

its also funny how people try and portray kazaa as their only place to get legal files. how convenient.

its all your fault though, pirates. they wouldn't be going through all these measures if you simply bought you what wanted.. people have proven themselves to be scum bags that cant be trusted, so MS will TREAT them like scumbags that cant be trusted. this isn't MS's plan of world domination, its so DEVELOPERS GET THE MONEY THEY'VE EARNED. which according to some of you is a sin. well if some day in your life you make a copywrighted material you hope to make $$$ off of, maybe you will understand.

its really simple. get a job. buy what you want and enjoy the latest tech in the future, or dont. this is going to be how it is, because it will leave the pirate scum back in the past. they can protest all they want, no one will give a shit. if you want something, you're going to have to pay for it. its not a dictatorship, its not a clamp upon freedom, its FAIRNESS

just so you know, when you screw microsoft out of money, you aren't just screwing bill gates or his head guys. you're screwing everyone down to the janitor. down to new jobs that COULD have opened if there was a bit more money allocated to that department. which could have consisted of a group of 20 average people that just want to make a living. ms dont have unlimited $$$. MS makes a lot of people happy by supplying great jobs. and there are always more job slots that can be made, if more money comes in. so just know that it DOES make a difference. and in average peoples lives.

this can be applied to any company as well

hmm.. so, posey, you have NOTHING illegal on your computer, then? No photoshop, no 3ds max, no file sharing programs, no mp3s? Nothing?

I find that hard to believe, but if it's true, more power to you.

I myself don't pirate everything, I own most of my games (and the ones I don't own are vaporware, so I DLed them), either way.. you can't think Microsoft pushing for a controlled computing environment is a good thing, can you?

Edit: Microsoft doesn't have unlimited amounts of money, true, but it is the richest company in the world..

Posey, don't get me wrong either. The only MS OS I've "stolen" is XP. I legally own 95 and 98. I plan on buying Longhorn for game support if it comes down to that, but I certainly would like another alternative such as linux that's free and supports my games. Doesn't look like that's going to happen though, now does it? Assuming DX is the path ahead, then we might as well all become MS drones and never consider doing anything "questionable" in terms of downloading.. this is why I really don't feel bad about "screwing MS out of my money," as I so elegantly put it earlier. The idea of MS being able to control what I do in the privacy of my own home is repulsive.

How to own the world, in 4 easy steps

Step 1: Wait for all the dicks in the world too be controlled by microsoft, running there OS, there Virus proggys, there everything.

Step 2: Download Linux

Step 3: Design hacking "stuff" that can hack microcraps proggys

Step 4: Release apon world, everyone will be useing the same thing, thus you have da power.

Also interesting fact, when .wmv files where first made by Microsoft (something that took there top people good few years to do) as an "unhackable play back file that uses windows media player" There was a .wmv converter out on the net within the week, ha.

like i said before, it will be controlled, and it will be fair. if you buy what you want, there is nothing to fear. why dont people complain about those beeping things at circuit city, where if you go out with something you haven't bought it beeps and you get tackled. ok maybe not tackled, but stopped. its because humans have proven themselves to be untrustworthy. this is how life is and how it will be. we need to get used to it.

because of this, MS needs to make these changes so developers dont get screwed over.

MS doesn't really need to make these changes. Sure, it's a solution, but there are others. Take in example Half-Life. Now sure, it can be pirated, but past single player, the piracy is useless as you can't play it online. Plus with advances in software distribution, such as Steam, piracy is becoming more and more of a bad idea. I wouldn't be cool with VALVe being able to track my IP if I had stolen software, would you?

Other programs with product activation are also a good solution, such as NAV 2004. It's not uncrackable, but it would stop the majority of people.

I'm cool with the idea of companies providing their own solution to piracy (I bought Norton SystemWorks 2004 and had to do the product activation), but not one single company deciding what is "right" or "wrong."

Point being, DRM is fine, DRM to the extreme (aka Microsoft) downright disgusts me.

having sex with a girl under 18 in the privacy of your home should also be legal yes?

as long as you bring someone back to your private home so you can murder them it will be alright, yes?

because of the internet, your choices in the privacy of your home affect companies, and in turn affect people that just want to make a living to provide for their family. when you wrongfully take that away, that is wrong, no matter what planet you are on, or where you are. its a negative impact on other people and it will not be tolerated.

someday if you have a copyrighted work you want to sell, you may understand why MS is doing this, and you would praise them for it. for now, try and put yourself in someone elses shoes.

I find posey's posistion on this issue a bit odd, considering he was quite outspoken in defense of people who download the HL2 stolen files.

Oh wow. You're looking at my view all wrong. I'm in NO way saying "hey, this is a bad idea, I can't DL pirated software anymore!"

That's fine and dandy. I don't like the idea that Microsoft gets to decide what I CAN and CAN'T do, IE. use kazaa.

and what are they saying is 'right' and 'wrong'?

you will find that major companies will agree with MS on what is 'right' and 'wrong'. because they have one thing in commmon, they are trying to make a living off selling things.

this is because one who downloads the beta is not going to make an impact on the financial status of valve as opposed to downloading the full game.. and in my experience so far, it has only sealed pre-orders amongst people i know based on it. otherwise these people would be interested in other games and forget about hl2.

Microsoft is getting what they earn, they're making a monopoly of the industry and putting other companies out of business. When u say making $$$ u earn, microsoft makes a fair share, i dont think any of their developers are starving due to the fact that its a multi-billion dollar company. Bill Gates can kiss my ass. Just because u have a "legit" copy of every piece of software u own doesn't make u better than everybody else as u seem to think. Do u figure we should all look up to u? And by the way, how old r u?

You can apply the same rationale to just about any form of illegal app available, likewise the same rationale for mp3s. 'Testing the goods'. There is no defense for your arguments in light of what you have previously said. Remove the plank from thy own eye before trying to remove the splinter from thy brothers. Your my bitch on all fronts :dozey:

hmmm..... I guess it's time to go get linux and/or jsut stick with winXP...
