Diablo 3 announced

I do, but no CD. I gotta get the MPQs on here so I can do the whole "NO CD" thing.

Just got diablo 1 and I am loving it :)

After i am done with this i'll get the second.

So I was playing in Europe, but since all you guys are on USEast, I fired up a new account. I'll be adding you guys, my chars name is Necruh.

See ya on the other side

In Paris France indeed I was. T'was superlative.

That's great. I smiled like a little girl when the guitarist came up on stage and plucked the first few notes to the Tristram theme. Was one of the happiest moments in gaming news.

I'm actually liking the backdrop graphical styling, it doesn't drown out the character or bad guys, which is what you will be concentrating on anyway. Looks nothing like WoW, more like concept art. And the mobs look challenging.
I'm not liking the annoying popup health bars or the retro camera view though. ffs there is a reason why games have spent the last decade evolving from this archaic static viewpoint. Might as well go the whole hog and turn your resolution down to 800x600 too, for that true diablo atmosphere.

yay looks great :D (seriously.)

I wonder if this thread is about Diablo 3 still.

I absolutely loathe the way the armor looks.

Shoulder pads and rainbow swords in my Diablo, oh **** I'm going to catch the gay from this game

When i heard of this i was like meh. Never liked or had a interest in the Diablo games. But after seeing the gameplay demo. I'm buying 2 copies 1 for me and my brother. This is is bananas!!

Totally psyched for this game. I hope Diablo 3 is a big of an improvement as going from Diablo to Diablo 2. I thought Diablo was crazy good back in the day, only to be blown away at how much better Diablo 2 was.

BTW all Blizzard games have had dated or near dated graphics upon release. I've played enough Blizzard games to trust their art direction will help make the gameplay better.

Uh-oh, flamebait incoming.

I must say I am disappointed that Blizzard has stayed on the conservative side in terms of design with their updates to Diablo and Starcraft. Diablo will be interesting since World of Warcraft has a lot of Diablo-like qualities. I have no doubt, however, that they will be incredibly fun, addictive and polished games. Blizzard is the top of the class when it comes to game development - nobody does it better.

Blizz is so last-gen.

If Blizzard wanted to do something with drastically new gameplay it would be under a different title, not Diablo III

Actually the third comment on the blog that quote is from does a great job on arguing this point:

For some part i can feel your dissapointment. I mean, if every developer would just base their game design on only proven concepts then innovation would fall short, wouldn't it?
But the point here with Diablo is that it's a established franchise with a huge fanbase all around the world. And as a developer you cannot afford to mess around with the fundamental characteristics of a game like camera perspective, the overall gameplay and stuff that fans got used to and fell in love with. Any sequel should be treated with respect regards to its prequel. So keep the basics and improve upon them. Thanks the winning formula. You have made a better game (D3>D2) and the fans are happy. Great sales, a no-brainer!

So, in relation to your project, Fallout 3, i see that you (Bethesda) were more "brave" and gave gone a differet route with it compared to its prequels. No isometric perspective and deeply strategic combat elemets anymore. With Fallout 3 you realized your vision of how a Fallout game should be played in theses times with nowadays hardware and its visceral offerings but somehow ignored what the the whole dedicated Fallout fanbase was hoping for. In short, Fallout 2 with improvements in every aspect but still with the same feel to it.
I respect your decision to head a unproven direction with Fallout 3 but imho in the eyes off a Fallout fan it is not what it was meant to be...

Hope and wish you luck that you can prove us (the fallout fans) otherwise and we will find in F3 what we were waiting for all the long years...a decent post-apocalyptic role-playing game.

I dont completely buy into that justification. I mean there's been almost 10 years between d2 and d3 they could have rebooted the franchise by taking it in another direction ..just as bethesda is doing with fallout which is understandable because they were not the originators of the frnachise. Blizzard plays it a little too safe probably because shareholders want a solid return on their investment. In part I understand their design decisions ...but I was hoping for something more than a few game tweaks and coat of paint

While it's still early in it's development cycle, the Fallout 3 guy's comment is spot-on really. It's not like Blizzard has traditionally been averse to massive changes either, just look at the jump from WarCraft 2 to WarCraft 3. I look forward to playing both SC2 and D3 but to be honest, I really did expect more from Blizzard.

When I played Warcraft 3 I was blown away merely by the nostalgia... finally seeing my beloved units in 3D.
But besides that they delivered a fantastic game, so I really won't be expecting anything short of awesome with SC2 or D3.
Besides, they've got a damn huge fan base and would be stupid as hell to let them/us down with changes that they didn't feel were justified.

I laugh at the guy playing D2 sitting there getting attacked by The Fallen, debating if he wanted to use the Axe or Sword.

Nifty video, would have been nifty if they showed more skills, though.

That's not true, the greatly improved from Warcraft 2 to 3.

True, they went from cookie cutter races to completely balancing it all out. I say that's a large change in game mechanics for the game.

You think they'd bring back the Frozen Orb from D2 in D3? I loved that skill even though it was largely the only skill you used for the Sorc (cold).

The first edit looks great with the shadows, while the second is a bit much imo. Here's one I whipped up for the hell of it. Nothing special, but I replaced the silly looking gargoyles and added some shadow:

Also, I thought this was cute:

Not that it matters because I really dont think they'll change it either way. I went back to Diablo 1 recently, and really this dark and gritty thing most people are complaining about was lost between D1 and D2. Rose colored glasses are not nearly dark and gritty enough to describe the Diablo people seem to remember.

Right now you're all just crying until we actually see more then 20 minutes of the game. Sanctuary has had 20 years peace. From the looks of trailer, and small parts of the gameplay, this is a pretty sudden attack so it makes sense that not everything is going to be some dark corrupted hellhole right off the ****ing bat.

Leave horror to people who understand its artistic subtleties (the professional artists at Blizzard).

There isn't much opinion that comes into it. The art style is more Warcraft than it is Diablo 1/2. Fact. There is gravity. Fact. There's no argument here.

No, the "gritty" style as you call it wasn't lost between D1/2.

It doesn't matter if there's been peace or not. The physical properties of materials wouldn't change ffs. Get a clue. It's people like you who make me ageist. The texture work should be based on photographic references rather than painted from someones head.

Reading you're post made me realize how wrong I was, I demand blizzard gives me back my macabre, dark and realistic purple scatter cushions.

They changed the look of both Starcraft and Starcraft 2 based on tester/fan suggestions, and there's a chance they could do the same for Diablo 3 as well.

This was the Starcraft that was first shown at E3:

Based on fan feedback, it was later changed to this:

Nice, dark, gritty screenshot, thanks. Look at the realism in the tiles and dirt on the walls. Nice.

I'm glad you finally realised you're wrong.

Hopefully they'll change it as with those screens above this post, but I imagine it's too much work, so they'll just make their excuses and continue.

Some people just cannot accept change.

It's people who want more of the same vs. people who realize that would make the genre stale and unenjoyable.

Glad I did too, but before I go:

jacobsladder.jpg

Everyone is taking a handful of areas, introduction areas which aren't meant to be the most visceral in the game, completely out of context. Much like I took those shots of Jacob's Ladder out of context. Is Jacob's Ladder an ineffective horror movie because it has scenes with rich colors?

Creating an effective atmosphere of horror/violence/evil does not require you to use desaturated, over-contrasted tones. In many situations, using colored lighting (especially greenish hues) can provide an equally, if not more effective environment.

The artists at Blizzard are very experienced, and know what they're doing. They didn't gain their popularity by being naive. Just because the game has a more Dali-esque palette, in a starting area in a demo that's unfinished with probably non-finalized lighting, in no way invalidates it.

So with that being said, stfu.
