First GTA IV review

lolol

Don't get me wrong, I'll get this as soon as it's out for PC, since the multiplayer modes seem pretty awesome, but it's not the killer app that makes me wanna buy a console.

We'll just see about that :naughty:

Yea looks great, but I can wait 6-8 months for it, no way I'll ever buy a console for anything I can get on pc. Which reminds me does anyone know if mgs4 is comin to pc? Damn I hope so.

Well thanks for the input from various members, much appreciated. The 6-8 month timeline for GTA4 after console release is too long for me, but justifying a purchase of a 360 for one game sounds ridiculous (but I'd LOVE to do it still!)

My other issue is that with my new computer I also purchased a 22" widescreen monitor, with DVI ports in it, what would be the obvious connection from this screen to say...the 360? Can you do HDMI > DVI? Or do I need to set my sights lower.

And believe me...I'm seriously considering the 360 purchase now. I've been using a 360 controller with my PC for the past year for games like Pro Evolution...it's much better. (Oh and Stern it's the same computer we've spoke about before. Q6600 @ 3.0ghz Quad Core, 2gb Ballistix RAM, 500GB HDD, BFG 8800GT OC2, Water cooled case + triple radiator, blu ray player etc...)

Well I have a vga monitor... but my graphics card has DVI ports... I have an adapter that turns my DVI into a VGA.

And so I use my purchased XBOX 360 VGA cable to plug into my monitor. If your monitor already has DVI ports, I'm sure you can use the same converter thing to convert the VGA to DVI or whatever.

That review was a great read.

I honestly haven't been this excited for a game in years. Even when waiting in line for the Wii, I wasn't that thrilled. It's nice to experience that feeling again; I've missed it.

I think I'm getting on my friends' nerves. I've got them interested to the point where they have preordered, but I'm turning into that guy who keeps talking about one thing for a lot of the time, though these episodes aren't' too frequent.

Christ, Stern, you create the "one and only" GTA IV thread and then go and make yet another one? :p

Oh well, this might as well go here so as not to bump the other one again - http://kotaku.com/379203/the-gta-iv-compendium--faq

Not a review, but a good collection of all the facts and an FAQ at the end. Nice way to get caught up on all the things we have to look forward to. :)

Edit - Haha, just checked out that (completely legitimate) first review. First thing I see on the top of the first page - "Should you spend 40 quid on this if you've already got Football Manager 2007?"

Me: o_O

Well goddammit, so when I buy this game in a few months, almost none of you will be playing it online on the PC.

This game makes me ejaculate into random people's shoes. And Gray, I might be playing on the PC just for the sake of the modding community that is inherent in all GTA games.

Im gagging to get my hands on this game, Ive got exams 2 weeks after its release date...but I just know that whole time will consist of me glued to the screen...ah well, life sucks anyway, make the most of the now right? mheh.

It's gonna be the only game I'll buy twice. Once for 360 cause I want to play it sooner rather than later. And then for PC for the superior controls, modding and easier online (possibly...).

Liberty City, modeled after New York, is actually smaller than San Andreas from GTA III.

Typo? Do they mean "smaller than San Andreas from the GTA 3 series" or
"smaller than Liberty City was last time"?

It'll probably be more than a few months, they have to port RAGE over to PC, then port all the actual game contents to PC, then they have to optimize it for PC, and iron out potential graphical glitches etc.

You don't "port" 360 games for PC, you add options and keyboard. The 360 is a PC.

Oh shut up Rapstah before I shove my joystick up your anus.

If the 360 is a PC, how come I can't run Assassin's Creed on a PC of equal specs?

And then you'll still have to drive with a keyboard! - unless you do the m&k/pad swap everytime you get into a car (XD).

I'm very much considering a 360 too now (though I have other games I could buy for it too). My university money's just come in too, and I have a rather large surplus (after all payments are taken out etc). My mate bought his 360 with uni money so hmm...

The game itself sounds stupidly immense though. I wonder how they fit everything in, like the chance that someone you kill in a car might land their foot on the accel. too, and horn and stuff. Maybe it's an advantage of using the euphoria engine.

Because the PC version has to be optimized for all hardware specifications?

And besides you can't buy a PC of equal specifications.

Noticed that too, pretty sure they mean from the GTA III series, as I'm almost certain I've heard them say before that it's atleast as big as the original Liberty City. Also noticed they said it was split into four sections and then named five, so maybe it isn't the most reliable guide...

Xbox 360 controller for Windows.

Honestly I've preferred the PC versions of the last few GTAs solely for the superior aiming, but since that looks to be much less of an issue with this one I'm more than happy to sacrifice that for more tactile driving controls. It's what I spend most of my time doing anyway. :)

Liberty City in GTAIV is afaik BIGGER than LC in GTA3, but SMALLER than the "San Andreas state" in GTA:SA.

You can't compare LC to SA. A lot of SA was copy-pasted, while realistically done, still copy-pasted.

How Large Is Liberty?

In comparison to San Andreas the total map area is smaller. However, the new Liberty City is the largest individual and most detailed city to date. Rockstar has said that Liberty City will be comparable to San Andreas in terms of scope when one takes into account "the level of verticality of the city, the number of buildings you can go into, and the level of detail in those buildings." In addition, Dan Houser has also stated that that there would not be any "dead spots" or "irrelevant space" within Liberty City, unlike the countryside and deserts filling a substantial amount of map area in San Andreas.

I never said that it was BAD that it's smaller, I'd prefer a smaller better-done world than a larger more generic/average feeling world.

Fair enough :)

GTA has always been a pad game for me - even with the original. Aiming has always been easy and it's all about the driving.

Maybe this will be how MS will afford the exclusive DLC ;)

No, but they are a business and have had exclusivity contracts with both Sony and Microsoft.

Yeah that puzzled the **** out of me too. That can't possibly be related to GTA IV. Probably something to do with the previous page.

"see if the 2008 update is worth the money P90"

must be a review for Football Manager 2008

Listen S4B do you actually have any idea how console games are developed in the first place? Do you think developers for PS3, 360 or Wii games just sit in vast offices with consoles of their choice working with gamepads and wiimotes all day long to make those games?

Here's Capcom talking about Devil May Cry:-

It [the engine] is not a 360 engine. It's not an engine for the 360. It's the internal engine that we use at Capcom for next generation machines called the MT Framework [note: MT stands for multi-target]. That actually runs on PC. As you know, we did originally plan to have this title just on PS3, but actually the development was done on a PC, not on a particular console. So because it's all done on the PC... it makes it very easy to move it put it on the 360 and use the power of that machine, or to put it on the PS3 and use the power of that machine, each in different ways. It's really pretty easy to do it, developing it from this PC base.

Now grand as Rockstar are, they aren't using specially licensed Adobe Photoshop for 360, or Autodesk 3D Studio for PS3 technology to make their game assets. They are working on PCs and using 360 & PS3 developer kits to port and test the stuff on the console hardware after it's been built. Clue up ffs, your constant 'no it ain't so' regarding GTA IV on the PC down the line is getting more than tiresome.

The only things that stop certain games from coming to one platform over the other are exclusivity contacts between developers and console producers, and whether there's an audience on PC worth pursuing (likewise with PC to console games). Ultimately porting to the PC does require a degree of fine tuning, but it's nowhere near the monumental task you are trying to BS people with. :dozey:
