The quintessential First Person hero, Gordon Freeman has become a messianic figure, not only in the storyline of Half-Life but for First Person Shooting games as well. He never utters a single line of dialogue and is rarely seen aside from his weapon hand, and yet his history and personality have grown to epic proportions through official artwork and his (and your) actions in the Half-Life games. In 1999, when the original game was released, most FPS games starred macho, one-liner spewing, cigar-chewing Schwarzenegger types (who certainly have their place, especially on this list) and being a player cast into the role of a nerdy everyman against the forces of evil was a refreshing experience. Freeman's two-game non-stop journey through hell and back has transformed this MIT graduate into a hardened but tragic warrior and most gamers should have as much reverence for him as the stunned civilians whom he passes in his adventures.

Just thought you'd like to know. I took this from gamefaqs.com

Makes sense, Gordon is the almighty, the leader of men, the ganesh of the gaming world !!!!

Gordon isn't quintessential at all - that's the point, surely?
Whatever, well done Gordy, ya bespectacled stud.

*breaks into song while holding up half life 2 box*

"Did you ever know that you're my hero?..."

Where's the love for Cate Archer?
Cate Archer's awesome. Actually one of my favourite game characters. Not HUGELY high up the list, but pretty high. Perhaps higher than Gordon actually.

Hmm wonder what rank Master....uhh...anyway I wouldnt exactly call him a badass, but after beating half life 2 today for the xbox, I must say that his game is the best fps i have ever played..so congrats...

Cate Archer is good, but Gordon is better....no im not gay

Fun, he is the true hero that's for sure. And I just heard that X-box user say Half-Life 2 was "the best fps". The gods have finally smiled upon us.

Gordon should be the evilest. He killed hundreds of police officers and soldiers who were only doing their duty.

I have to admit, you're right there. A lot of the Metropolice were just doing their job, and signed up so they could get enough rations to feed their families, and the like. Its a shame most people can't actually see the moral ambiguity of the game.

He ain't a hero, he is an average joe, that is what makes him so great!

The average joe has an MIT degree and is an expert in theoretical physics?

I thought the best thing about Gordon Freeman was that he was the quintessential nerd. I mean, here you are, sitting at your computer, playing this character, shooting your way through an army and you're playing a beardy ginger geeky scientist with glasses and an orange suit.

It's not his attributes (Okay, it might be a bit about the lack of them) but the heroic actions which, in turn, makes him a hero.

Doesn't really matter if he has any qualities or not, his actions speak for themselves. Oh, wait, I mean my action.

Self Defense, they shot at him first for no reason!

If thats the guy out of Deus Ex which i think it was ... then it can go either way can't it, as your actions later in the game decide the outcome ... gotta love games like that tbh :)

Yeah I liked that about HL2 - Breen wasn't bog standard "I am evil and I know I am evil and I revel in it, MUAHAHAAARRR!"
He wasn't simply a megalomaniac. Essentially, he was hoping to - at least in his eyes - save the human race from extinction and at the same time make it become something more.
He even knew that a lot of what the Combine was doing was questionable, but he felt that in the long term it would be for the best.

As for the metrocops - they got built up as drunk-with-power sadists, so you didn't feel so bad about killing them. But of course if you put it into context and think of their families etc. then you could say pretty much the same for the marines in HL (except oif course they didn't necessarily join up in a fit of absolute desperation).

In HL1, it was quite obvious some of them felt guilty about it - "killing civilians? I didn't sign up for this shit."

Hmmm - I don't remember that. Well, well done to them too.

Not true, Gordon assaulted and possibily killed metrocops who were detaining a couple. He was also fled from the police and resisted arrested which in the act led to the deaths of other people in the way.

Also: Serious Sam comes before JC Denton? Bull!

Resisting arrest, attacking several officers, throwing cans at peoples' heads, conspiracy to commit murder, inciting socio disobedience and disturbance, aiding criminals, use of illegal machinary, having no identification, and ect.

Thats a lot.

Duke Nukem wins my vote. Sure he's completely one dimensional in behavior... He kicks ass, spouts Bruce Campbell lines and bangs chicks that beats a zero dimensional hero like Gordon in my book.

It's a case of the old Jocks vs Nerds debate, really. I despise Duke Nukem because he a Jock, but I'm glad Gordon won because Nerds are better than Jocks.

As for the Doom Marine, I think he's somewhere inbetween - at least HE doesn't lust after girls and spout stupid one-liners! Then again, neither does Gordon.

So how is Gordon a zero dimensional character aside from the whole non-talking issue?

How is Duke Nukem not despite being so in behavoir?
