Ok, it's christmas- a time of cheer, a time of beer, a time of electronic lights. Myself, I have those little yellow icicle lights up in my closet I call a room year round, but they had recently died. I took them down, and got a new set to put up. As I stapling them up, a stray staple went through the wire and killed all four strands, which I already had plugged together. I should have recognized this as an omen, but instead of going into hibernation I continued towards near doom.

A couple days later, the decorations were up, including the little village of glass houses and people, and each house has its own lightbulb (or incadescent lamp for the brits) and a cord. Of course, one light was already out, so I had to replace the whole cord with one from another, disused set. I got the nine lights all plugged into the power strip, and into the wall. They all were working, or at least I thought. One had mysteriously gone out in the last minute or so. As I removed it from the house, it flickered on and back off. I figured it was loose in the base, so I wiggled the bulb a bit to get it into place.

After screams from all four of the siblings, and flipping the circuit breaker, the lights were back on. I was fine, and the spots were almost gone from my vision. I looked at the bulb I had been working on, and saw the glass had shattered, and the metal bit was still in the base. Great. I got some needlenose pliers from the garage and began to work the metal out. Suddenly- what? A flash of orange, and I'm flying backwards into the wall, can't see, pliers falling from my hand. After a few seconds, I can move again, and I realize... I forgot to unplug the damn cord before I started digging around inside of it with metal pliers. My best friend, who was over to decorate, was staring at me open mouthed. He thought I was a goner. Luckily, I'm, uh, not.

Closest I've coming to dying was being trapped 30 feet underwater in the Saint Lawrence, having lost my SCUBA regulator. Ended up paniking and swimming for the surface, and somehow stayed concious. The Bends were still a danger though, so I needed pure oxygen for a short while.

Is decompression sickness a problem at 30 feet below? I don't know, I'm just asking. I thought it really became a problem at deeper levels and then coming up from those levels.
