Olympics

Australia is doing pretty good from what I've seen. You should be proud.

Holy shit that guy ran fast... 100 meters in less than ten seconds.

Phelps has 16 medals total, 14 of them gold. Crazy stuff. Can't wait to see how he goes in London.

At least we got the woman's 4x100 relay. But still, second bites.

I finally just saw the women's fencing finals. USA got gold, silver, and bronze.

**** YEAH

what a load of garbage on the vault. They need to kick these judges out on their asses. Two people who fall get medals and the american who hopped gets nothing?

That 33 year old German who got silver was awesome :D

Oh and bad luck to Pavlova.

Used to date one in my senior year at high school.

Nuff sed.

My last girlfriend was a fencer. Great legs.

I bet she was happy that The US swept fencing.

Anyway, yeah, gymnasts have awesome bodies, not to mention that incredible flexibility

Jesus Christ this pole vaulter has an amazing body.

And all the volleyball players... holy wow... and natural too!

I guess when there is a tie they give it to the Chinese.

I thought age 16 is the minimum for the olympics? This one girl named Ksenia Semenova is 15 years old... yet no fuss about it, even though they think the Chinese girls are 14-15.

You have to be turning 16 or older on the year of the Olympics. It's probably different for different events though. Being a very young gymnast is a significant advantage, where in other events, it might not be.

What event is that?

He Kexin was awarded the gold because her scores were better based on the rules for tie breakers.

It's true they shouldn't have tie breakers though. They should share a medal I think.

Gymnastics. A person from the USA and China tied in score, but they gave the gold to China and the silver to the USA.

They showed the coach for the US female pole vaulter after she got silver. He was yelling at her and giving her useless "advice." What a jerk.

Great Britian = epic in Olympics :D

China and USA just cheat by putting 1000000 people in so that there is no room for anyother countries :O

Great Britain is doing fantastic.

I Just watched a Discovery channel thing on Olympic Rivals, so let me enlighten you.

The country who hosts the Olympics (China) automatically qualifies for nearly all events.

A limited number of participants from each country are allowed to attempt to qualify. Obviously if you bring the maximum amount you will have a better chance - but you have to qualify in order to compete.

China joined the Olympics for the first time in 1984.

China has adopted the technique of Russia when they dominated the Olympics in the middle of the last century...

China has about 3,000 training facilities where they spot talent in children and develop them. The pick of the bunch will devote their entire lives to performing in the Olympics.

Great Britain has no training facilities like this.

The US has recreation facilities and camps that can be joined for a fee, and they have Universities that offer Scholarships. The US does have some Olympic Universities that feature better facilities for certain sports over others. How one school might have a strong football team, and another might have a great track team.

Population 2008-08-19
1. China....1,331,167,709
3. USA.........304,184,799

(Great Britain - about 65,000,000)

Yes, that gives them more people to choose from, but as you can see from the results in most events, it's quality, not quantity.

In 2000 China got 3rd in the Olympics

In 2004 China got 2nd in the Olympics

In 2008 China will get 1st in the Olympics

I think next Olympics, China won't be quite as strong, because they won't auto-qualify, and they won't have the home-team advantage, but they are going to be the Country to beat for the foreseeable future.

I agree that it's biased towards population, but at the core, it's training and natural ability that win games. You compete against people, not a population.

EDIT

one last thing, certain countries tend to dominate in certain areas.

Just some examples - obviously Ping Pong is not going to be ... Australia's sport. Australia has awesome swimming facilities. Shame for them, Phelps from the US is really cleaning up. The women are doing well though. GBR is known for rowing and sailing. US is known for many things, particularly Basketball, where they have won gold every time (except one?) since the beginning.

I thought the Chinese did fantastic in the events that I've seen them perform in. They really have some talented athletes. I was very impressed at the male and female trampoline events I've seen them perform in, at the female gymnastics, at the male and female synchronized diving, and the males in the Rings.

I'm not honor bound to my country... I just watch and am impressed by whoever is impressive. I was really wowed by the Chinese in the above events.

I haven't watched the olympics at all, nor have I bothered to remember what I have heard.

But I did catch a smidget of the volleyball before I caught myself and changed channel.

It's the BBC announcers. They are so excellent at pulling you into a race. The one dude lost his voice though.

There have been some incredible come-backs. It's pretty exciting, and you don't have to be an athlete to appreciate it.

They are setting world records in almost every event. The fastest known human speed records of all time are getting crushed.

And today, 12 year-old "16"-year old Chinese gymnast He Kexin won gold over Nastia Liukin based on an obscure tiebreaking rule. The two received the same score from the judges, but He won a tiebreak because an Australian judge apparently was watching a different competition.

Lol yeah right.

I say we mate Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps and produce super babies.

Austrailian defends her scoring too http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/2...australian_judge_defends_her_scoring_of_.html

Apparently this judge has it out for Liukin
This is not the first time Colaguiri has disapproved of Liukin’s performance. At last year’s world championships, where Shawn Johnson beat Liukin for the gold medal, the Australian judge gave Johnson a score of 9.0 on bars and Liukin a score of 8.4. No other judge had the two separated by more than 0.2 points.
