Smokin' Aces - 3/10; Just horrible.
Idiocracy - 3/10; I was excited, the internets said it was good and you guys aren't usually to wrong but this movie was horrible and the 'Rita' character was disgusting to look at.
The Pursuit of Happyness - 8/10; A simple film but it was surprisingly good.
PoTC 3 - 6.5/10; Amusing/fun to watch but it was kind of convoluted and not really much else aside from fun but there is nothing really wrong with that.
Ocean's 13 - 6.9/10; They tried too hard.

Big Daddy - 8/10 - Enjoyed it :) Nice film. Adam Sandler is ace. Shame his newer stuff isn't as good. Apprarently his next film if going to be good though.

We Were Soldiers - 9/10

I expected to be a bland, americanised film but i feel it really does capture the horror and brutality of that battle, i remember seeing a documentry on that battle and it was extremely fierce with high casualties. Ok yeah, it is still americanised, but its still sticks to points that make war films great.

What American-made war film is not Americanized? I can't think of one that isn't.

Yeah, Sandler's glory days are long gone.

I'm watching Casino. Pretty long movie, and pretty good, but probably my least favorite of Scorcese's mob movies.

Fantastic 4, Silver guy

Very, very disappointed. They gave almost no backstory on Surfer and Galactus was dispatched totally nonsensically. They ruined it. It was totally rushed, probably because of Johnny's little solo thing.
Great movie if you don't care about the actual Marvel universe but this movie just does nothing justice.
They destroyed the franchise for me.

I was about to post saying I watched the movie but yeah you pretty much posted what I was going to say. I knew the movie was going to suck when I found out they were going to do this whole Silver Surfer/Galactus thing in 90 minutes :|

I'm still trying to grasp what "americanism" really means. It seems like a blanket term that you could apply to any film if you try hard enough.

As for American made war films lacking americanism, i can only guess that these fit the bill.

Schindler's list
Apocalypse Now
Saving Private Ryan-I know a lot of you are going to WTF. I know it's about a group of americans looking for another american etc, but i never felt (american) superiority when it came to the characters, they just happened to be american, the film would've had the exact same impact had it been the british, french, russians etc.

Letters from HiroJima(Spelling)- I havn't seen this film, but it's high on my list and it seems like Eastwoods primary goal was to make an unamericanized war film.

To me, "Americanized" means that no other side of the story is told other than the American point of view, with little or no attempt to humanize their enemies.

I thought SPR was a very "Americanized" (I know it's a broad term, but it'll do) film, although it showed it in less obvious ways. For example, whenever they capture the German machine gunner and he's speaking German, the sniper says to stop speaking that "Pig Latin". When Hoppum (or whatever his name was) kills the same unarmed German later on, it's not given a particularly negative tone. For me, it shows the film's attempt to portray the Americans as superior to the Germans.

These are just my views. Sorry if they're not very coherent, I'm very tired writing this.

Nah 'Americanism' is the ploy to portray Americans in these wars as these brilliant, self-sacrificing heroes, incredibly brave and not afraid of doing anything for the flag.

Saving Private Ryan shows that squad of soldiers as being sick of the war, people who are scared to death constantly, and just want to do the job and go home. They weren't looking for Pvt. Ryan becomes he is a comrade in dire straits, they did it because they knew it would earn them the right to go home. It shows war how it should be, a horrific struggle for survival in a foreign land against a tough and determined enemy, its to completely put you off war, and also build the respect for the veterans who actually did the fighting.

Band of Brothers is the best example I think, when they fought in the Battle of the Bulge, in Bastogne, they were completely surrounded and were suffering constant, and i mean constant, artillery fire, as if 'the whole world was firing on them at once'. The only people they could cling to was the person in the foxhole next them. Thats how utterly brutal it was.

Ill also quote from Pvt. Perconte in it, 'its been two years since ive seen home....two years....this ****ing war..' None of the veterans saw themselves as heroes, and asked for the medals they got etc, or started talking about the stories of it, because it was just too horrific to talk about. They just went home, and got on with their life, and will always salute the men who were killed as the real heroes.

A Bridge Too Far, shows Operation Market-Garden from a British perspective, as well as a German, Dutch and American view. How the Brits had to hold at Arnhem Bridge against the troops and tanks of the 2nd SS Panzer Division, (basically crack troops of the German Army) for the tanks that never came, suffering over 8000 causulties as a result.

There are loads of un-americanised war films out there.

A Bridge Over the River Kwai might count too.

And to be on-topic, thats a hell of a movie.

Hitckhiker's Guide - 6/10
Eh. Good in parts, but mostly pretty uninspired (ironically). Freakin hated the acting, from all but a couple minor parts. The ship's voice was great. The guy playing Arthur was not. Evidently he's still stuck in the Office, cause that's the only part he seems to know how to play...

Actually, it was the 9. SS Panzerdivision "Hohenstaufen" and 10. SS Panzerdivision "Frundsberg" who basically put a stop to Market Garden. 2. SS Panzerdivision "Das Reich" was nowhere near Arnhem or Nijmegen when Market Garden occurred. ;)

And yeah, I'll give you the fact that there are a lot of un-Americanized films out there.

Anyway, I'm now watching Backdraft. I first saw this movie as a kid (and went to the Universal Studios attraction), and it isn't half bad, besides the personification of fire and the nearly smokeless fire scenes. Donald Sutherland rocks in this movie. 7.5/10

The Departed - 8.7/10

BOOM HEADSHOT! BOOM HEADSHOT! BOOOOOOOM HEEEAAAADDDSSSHHOOOOOOTTTT!!!

Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer-
should be called Craptastic Four: Rise of The Stinky Pooper, because it sucked

The Departed - 8.7/10

BOOM HEADSHOT! BOOM HEADSHOT! BOOOOOOOM HEEEAAAADDDSSSHHOOOOOOTTTT!!!

Haha no joke. 75% of the people who get shot in that movie get it in the head.

I'm watching Supertroopers. Pretty stupid plot, but it's got some good lines in there. 8/10

Did you wiki that? :D

Just caught i. Robot on the tv then, id give it a suprising 7/10. Its got good action, and its a nice idea, but still lacking in places.

Nope. I just know it. ;)

Ah, Full Metal Jacket. The first half is a masterpiece, the second half falls flat on its face. First half- 10/10 Second half- 6/10

Fantastic Four : Rise Of The Silver Surfer - 6/10
Bahahaha...Alba is fit.

Freddy Vs Jason - 0/10
Worst. Film. Ever.

Havent lol'd that hard in a film due to crapness.

Can I ask what you thought was wrong with it? I see alot of people who didn't like the second half of the film but I thought it was brilliant. I consider it the part to really look forward to because whilst the first 'half' is really, really fantastic, you then get the second part which is made up of loads of different scenes which I thought were all equally awesome. The headquaters, the chopper ride, meeting Cowboy and his squad, the advance with the tanks into the city, ANIMAL-****ING-MOTHER, the reporters and the theatre/cinema scene, the sniper, Cowboys demise then the harrowing and somewhat scary conversation over the dying girls body.

Man, I'm going to watch Full Metal Jacket tonight. What a film!

i messed this post up will edit tomorrow:)

for good measure

Die Hard 10/10 i dont need to explain.

Prince of Egypt- Used to love this when I was a kid. Lots of liberties taken in regard to loyalty to the Book of Exodus, but at least they had the sense to put a disclaimer in there. Good voice talents, but the animation was inconsistent in its quality. Good overall movie. 8.5/10

Dont Look Now - 7/10 ;
a bit weird horror/ thriller. Unsatisfactory ending although donald sutherland and julie Christie are v. good, great chemistry.

Volver - 8/10 ;
Great script and characters. Penelope Cruz is gorgeous, interesting plot too.

-ly pretentious.

Lol. Still good though.

Nah no way. Its a great film that doesn't come close to being pretentious. People just say that because of the rose-petal scenes. Yet i find it funny that some people will call American Beauty pretentious and then go on to praise Metal Gear Solid for its fantastic storyline.

Exactly.

That's one movie I didn't think I'd see mentioned in this thread. But yeah, good movie, my mum or someone bought it some time ago.

I dunno, the bag scene is a little much. With that said, this movie is a definite 10/10, and that scene really doesn't detract from all that AB has to offer. Ball is emotional genius.

10/10- Army of Darkness, this movie never gets old, Cambell is a god

"Give daddy some sugar, baby"
"Come to PaPa"
"Well hello mister fancy pants. You Ain't leading but two things right now, jack and shit. And Jack left town"

Everything he says AOD makes me laugh until my sides hurt.

Ur suck, MGS was awsom! :frown:

Nah, it isn't all that pretentious, just a little self-indulgent in parts. Plus Kevin Spacey (despite being one of my favourite actors) is sometimes a little... idunno, self-aware in the way he portrays his characters? Maybe I'm nit-picking.

Either way, still a 10/10 film, pretention and all.

Edit - Oh yeah...

Blood Diamond - 7.5/10
Pretty good. The cliche badass-turned-hero ending nearly ruined it...

Hot Fuzz 9/10

****ing amazing.

Most fun I had watching a film in a long long while. Yaarr!

Dumb and Dumber - 8/10 - Still love it after all this time :D

Legally Blonde - 8/10

It was on TV last night and I watched it so sue me. I think it's funny plus there's a bunch of women in it so you know 8 seem befitting me thinks.

^ God, it was fricking boring to me.

1408 9/10

I liked it a whole lot. Kinda hard to elaborate because the whole movie is just one continuous mind **** in the same place. A highly entertaining continuous mind ****, but a continuous mind **** nonetheless. Not really scary. Some parts try to be spooky, and it likes to jump out at you, but mostly it's just zany. Interesting plot twist which kinda twists twice.. I dunno. And like most movies of the same unnerving, enigmatic nature, there are the occasional laugh out loud funny parts.

I know my opinions aren't too highly noted around here, but I thought it was very very good, and I would reccomend taking a gander.

Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl - 9.5/10

I know it's old but I still love it.

(Can't wait to see PotC: AWE on DVD)
[I'm waiting for it to be on DVD so we can watch it on the new flat screen LCD]
{It's a better quality screen then the movie screen plus we have surround sound so why waste money going to the movies?}
<Although my Dad still prefers the movies to his own new TV, WTF?>

I don't know if I'm going to see it. I hated the second POTC, and from what I heard the latest one is more of that.

The first one ruled, though.
