Red Dead Redemption Official Thread

I need to stop checking this thread. Not for spoilers, but if I keep looking, I'll end up not going to work in the morning, and then again at one. And I need the money. I just spent my last on a ****ing game.
 
I need to go to bed. I'm so tired. So much roping. So much...I don't even rightly know what day it is. I've lost all sense of time since Bonnie gave me that lasso.


Also during my travels across the map roping people I discovered that pumas secretly run everything in this game. The revelation came upon me when, at Twin Rocks, I was attacked by a pack of wolves with a puma at their center, calmly watching as if commanding them. And then there was a woman I met who was in the process of being kidnapped; I roped and tied the man, cut her loose, only to be attacked by not one, but two pumas. I believe this to have been a clever trap set by the mountain cats.

There was a thunder storm the other night when I was playing (thunderstorm being in game) and I was getting serious STALKER vibes from it. Needless to say I just stayed in the saloon at armadillo and gambled/drank for a few hours before hitting the sack and waking up to a rainy morning. Was awesome.
 
I've yet to see one god damn bear. I'm guessing you have to wait until the top right portion of the map is unlocked. I went to some bridge trying to access that part and it was blocked off. When I turned around me and my horse fell off the bridge into the water below. That's the only time I've died so far...

Haha, well that was a bit of a glorification. 2 of those days are the weekend & the Friday (today) was an excursion that I've already been on & didn't want to redo.

I've been playing an online Posse all night and it was really fun. my friend from work suggested we play and for 2½ hrs straight we just roamed around on missions. its a real blast but i also noticed how great the engine works with the setting. the rainstorm during our attack on some outlaws was insanely good. and i don't think there was any suffering in the graphics department when you play the game online
 
Two friends and I went up to the bear area and hunted bears. We got a few kills in with just using the knife, and I one-shot a bear with the throwing knives. Not so realistic damage, but hell if I care.

Then we took turns jumping off the mountain.

After that I got spawn-camped by a pack of cougars.

****in' cougars man. Worse than snorks.
 
My copy arrived yesterday. Didn't get a chance to play it after Work though, so managed to fit in about 10-15 minutes worth of play on Free Roam before Work this morning ... now I'm contemplating telling my boss I have some sort of rare, contagious disease.

I've only experienced a single cougar... and that was in multiplayer freeroam.

I got mauled in the back by one, one hit kill. It was brutal. Didn't even see him coming.

I'll be around later today after I get off work and get back from the plasma place if anybody wants to play. I'll probably be home around 12:30 PM central time.
 
I think I've spent more time playing poker than doing anything else.

Just got it, now in Armadillo talking to the Sherrif.

Loving the atmosphere, never felt such a sense of location in a game before. Maybe thats because I dont play..any western games or watch westerns, but I know all about them etc. Theyve seriously done well on the artistic front.

It still reaks of GTA, especially in the tutorials so far, but its definitely not GTA with horses.

Seriously impressed so far.
 
Finarry got the game. The next three hours at work will prolly seem to be three years ...
 
Got it (sort of, see purchases thread). Played a bunch of single player, loving it for the most part. Few niggling things I'm not so keen on, and the aiming is a bit sticky (I thought of all things from GTA IV this is what they'd fix), but it doesn't bring the experience down too much. Just got my first $1k, put down 750 on a fast golden horse and set out exploring, doing challenges and picking up stranger quests. So very easy to get distracted in this game, it reminds me a lot of Oblivion in that way (or maybe it's just the flower picking).

If there's one thing I'm disappointed in (but not much, since it was never really high on my list), it's competitive multiplayer. Free roam is fun with friends, taking on gang hideouts particularly, but the adversarial modes are dumb as hell. The aiming mechanics really show their weakness here, and it could be fixed but for one measly change - let me join games with expert aiming mode! Why the hell would they put normal and expert on the same playlist if it's just going to shove me in games with normal? Guh.

Anyway, no biggie, the single player's too good to care very much. Best moment so far - went out hunting a bounty worth $240 alive. Shot up his entire posse in one dead eye, but he ran out the back and rode away. I caught up with him and slaughtered his horse to try and rope him, but it was a bit close to a cliff and he went tumbling down with it and died. Once the annoyance of getting my paycheck cut in half wore off, there was a distinct sense of consequence about the whole thing that felt very unscripted and 'real.'

I couldn't get the throwing knives to work yesterday. Me and this other guy were in free roam, and I was on my invisible horse trying to throw my invisible throwing knives, and the other guy was trying to throw his knives, and it just wasn't happening.

So I pulled out my invisible rifle and shot him.

A patch just released that fixes the invisibleness.. I think. That's what someone told me, at least.

Never even redeemed mine. I feel like it ruins the progression of the game to get a bunch of good stuff from the start.
 
They need to patch melee right the **** now, I mean, I beat a man senseless, knock him to his ass, and he gets back up in 3 seconds and starts punching me again? Seriously? I mean either make it so they stay down for long enough to be a badass and fight everyone in the saloon, or make it so when you knock them down they get back up and run the **** away. I seriously love fist fighting, it needs to be done.
 
The f*ck are you guys talking about melee being broken? You're obviously not wailing on people enough or your game is broken like a dead whore.
 
Well the fact you can only punch is a bit meh.

Its like theyve taken GTA 4 and milked it down a bit, but upped the variety and the landscaple. Oh dear god the landscape. The views in this game are...amazing.

Ive just had one of the funniest moments Ive eve had in gaming. Got into a coach/taxi and set my destination, guy rolls forward a bit onto the train tracks...and toot toot, here comes zee train.

''Im just gonna rest my eyes a bit'' and Im sat there going ''train...trAIN...TRAIN!!!''. Dead.
 
We have to make a pact whenever we play freeroam together against the AI that we'll all use Expert Aiming mode.. having lots of guys using standard aiming mode is just way too god damn easy... blam blam blam the AI goes down like a sack of bricks... no challenge. Hunting animals is no challenge that way either. Too easy to kill bears, cougars and the like.

Who is with me? Expert all the way! I wish they'd come out with some god damn expert only free roam servers... anything but that is retarded. Tired of jerkoffs killing me time and time again without any challenge on their part.


The fact that Rockstar didn't make any expert only free roam is the most retarded shit ever. I mean how the **** can you possibly do that? They better release some expert only free roam servers.


EDIT: Oh and also... expert aim on makes deadeye infinitely more valuable... because it's a good way to get quick kills and makes having deadeye a significant advantage.
 
Loving the game so far. I had high expectations but they are being met or exceeded. About three hours in now, gonna dive back in after a break. Did the Bonnie missions so far since they seem to be a cowboy tutorial, but now I have my lasso, I might go do some freeroaming and find the horse of my dreams.

And yes, I know the stud you get after the breaking-in tutorial is one of the best in the game, but I don't really like Palominos.
 
Man, to hell with that palomino. The horse I had before that, he was awesome. He'd been with me forever, after the pumas killed my last horse. Those goddamn pumas. But that stallion, he sucks compared to my old horse. "Why don't you keep this one?" Bonnie says, then I can't whistle for my old horse no more.

Breaks my heart. I gave him a name and everything.

I played the team deathmatch things with a few friends and I have expert on all the time, I dunno if it's forced in those gametypes but I was doing much better than everyone else. Lock-on makes it impossible to get any worthwhile headshots, so normal mode is just dumb.
 
I loved the palamino. And I must have rode it too hard because it just died between my legs. Literally running along and suddenly it keeled over and flung me off.

I stole a shitty horse off some banditos and I am now inconsolable. I drowned my sorrows at the bar though and beat up some wench so it's all fine really.

EDIT: Also, the game is a hell of a lot better with Expert Aim turned on. If the normal one is called "Normal", I dread to think how easy "Casual" must be.
