Short Story Contest! [DISCUSSION THREAD]

Guys. There is one day.

If this time limit elapses, although I will declare theotherguy a winner by default, I shall be forced to declare the rest of you THE LAMEST COMMUNITY.

Or a community that is vastly made up of highschool, secondary school and university students who have exams around this time of year and have never heard of the short story topic until Sulk posted it and are not sure how to go about it.

Hl2.net messed up my formatting. :|
Sorry Sulk, but I literally have had no time to do anything. The sunny weather has meant we've been trying to sort the house out while it lasts. Our downstairs pretty much has no doors at all.

I will try and post something...

I will post my, just below 500 word, not close to finished, short story now. For the record I have it all written, just not typed. I gotta leave soon so this is all you get.

It's cool. Guys I'm not too bothered about the limit. If you think you can get something in for the next few days then just say something (dek I is looking at you).

Exams are a good excuse, failure to read an adequate topic explanation are not. But yeah, fair point. One forgets one isn't the only one undergoing exams. One.

It's not the word count that bothers me, but that my story is not even close to complete.

Well, if you keep adding to it until I close the thread... ;shh:

Damnit this forum is annoying for formatting. All my quotations are messed up.

The formatting in Dekstar's post makes it read like a physical page-turnable novel. Nice

Great entries so far. Dodd's, what's the prize for this one?

Custom title, like last time, and respect.

We might look into something more substantial but I dunno what we could really give. :p

Extra-sized avatar abuse like all the supermods are doing these days? Post-count reset? A choice of custom-title?

I'm gone for 4 days and am winning this thing. What happened to mah forums!!?

Seems to be the thing to do. Maybe I'll finish typing it tonight.

Voting will be extended till tonight, basically so that I can vote lol. But also because very few people have voted.

I'm finding it impossible to choose between dek's entry and theotherguy's entry. They're both brilliant!

I wanted to enter that one but couldn't be bothered lol.

Please start another one very soon but maybe a little shorter lol.

I've decided that I can't possibly choose 'twixt otherguy and desktar. Otherguy's entry is highly amusing and I like the central conceit of writing a late-Victorian sci-fi story with the actual benefit of hindsight. On the other hand, dekstar's playful handling of a crime case hilariously sends up the origins of the detective story, which lie in an exposure of the dark secrets at the heart of the household. I laughed out loud when I realised what was going on.

Nope, can't decide: I'm going to flip a coin. heads is dekstar. tails is otherguy.

EDIT: Tails.

Nah, I changed my vote. I think dekstar's is the better story by a slim margin.

EDIT: But now I have my regrets oh god.

Anyway, I'll close voting when I wake up in the morning.

I didn't vote for the time-travel one as it didn't catch my interest. I had read similar things before and there was nothing especially interesting about it. I also didn't like the joke/point at the end or whether it was supposed to be witty or just tongue in cheek. I found Crime to be rather dull and I figured out what it was very early on, making reading through the rest a bit of a chore. Incomplete Odyssey on the other hand, although it was far too short, very much grabbed my interest and was the only one of the stories to really entertain me.

It should be disqualified however becuase it was no long enough.

I already said I'd accept it because of the low number of entries, and I don't plan on going back on that.

Three staff members who did not vote - likely to be Samon, Ennui and Suicide42 - will be asked to deliberate together on the winner. They will then be asked to choose one of their number to deliver their collective verdict. I'd like Corp.Sheepo and Dekstar to PM me with the custom titles they would like to have if they happen to win.

Firstly, I would like to say, since I forgot, that my story is a pastiche of Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game". It is so, because it is set within the same universe, and was attempting to mantain similar character revelations.

Second, I should be disqualified for the length.

Third, I have absolutely no idea what title I would like. Suggestions?

Fourth, I am planning to finish typing the rest tomorrow, hopefully.

Make the title something ridiculously long, then everyone will notice it.

I asked for "Potential Lunch Winner", but now I'm feeling "Protector of the Undead". Aw well. Won't matter any way.

Oooh custom titles... Hmmm... Gotta think of something funny...

The votes of the tie-breaker judges are in. Ennui, Samon and our own distinguished Zerimski have all voted.

The results were 2-1 in favour of Dekstar.

I hereby declare Dekstar the winner of the second ever halflife2.net short story contest!

He isn't, I called him out of retirement.

I'd just like to say thanks and congrats to all three of you who entered, and I'll be posting up a new story compo thread very soon.

I'd like to thank everyone who..........aw ****!

Congrats Dekstar

Thanks everyone for voting for me! I'd like to thank Jeebus, and Gawd, and the Spaghetti monster!

*raises trophy dramatically*

Thank you world! *cries*
