Starcraft 2 confirmed!

My hype meter is becoming uncomfortably large after watching that third gameplay video. Mothership... wow...

What shields?

All I see is their huge body armor.

edit : Oh, at 1:04 they do seem to be holding huge shields with big red stars on them... strange, place-holder models maybe.
Those are footman models from Warcraft 3.

i wonder when they'll show off more units from Terran and Zerg... *drool*

meh it looks nice and the trailers are all pretty exciting but ..I just wish they had gone in another direction, did something innovative with rts ..but who am I kidding Blizzard doesnt innovate they take what's already out there and make it better ..maybe SC2 will be the game that brings me back to rts, which I havent really got into since Warcraft2

with valve set to take on the console world Blizzard pretty much has the pc market cornered ..not good for it's competitors ..I'm hoping some upstart with something innovative will knock them off their pedestal ...just so pc gaming doesnt become just MMOs and rts

Once again Blizzard wins at cinematics:

I agree with everything that Absinthe, babyheadcrab, Grey Fox, and the other Starcraft junkies in here have said. It's relieving to know I'm not alone in being completely ****ing nuts about this game.

I hope they give the campaigns the attention they deserve - Starcraft is the one and only RTS I've ever played where I could play through all of the singleplayer and actually want to keep going.

For those of you complaining about graphics or art style (god knows why - it looks kickass on both fronts to me):

Take a look at SC1's Alpha
earlyalpha6.jpg

Now obviously they're not gonna completely change EVERYTHING we've seen but there is still quite a ways to go.
Ahahahahaha, I hope that giant white transformer on the right wasn't supposed to be Protoss

I wondered months ago when would the time come that I would know what actually happened to all characters after BW. That time is finally coming now.

And who knows, maybe there is some innovative stuff they're doing and it hasn't been announced yet. I mean, it WAS just announced yesterday..

Shaker, are you serious? There is NO WAY in hell that this game is going to come out in 2007. I'd be surprised if it was anything earlier than fall/winter 2008. There's no real reason for them to ship the statue at the same time as launch that I can think of either... I imagine it's for some other reason.

Of course, if it was true, Oct 07 would be ****ing glorious. But there's no way a game is going from using WC3 models as placeholders to gold in five months.

They've also been working on the game since 2003, soooo...

Amazing, I just saw all videos and images. Protoss will kick ass! I love them, their units and ultra futuristic technology.
btw, "Zeratul has not been seen since, but he is one of the characters confirmed by Chris Metzen to appear in the upcoming sequel StarCraft II."

Yeah, perhaps the placeholder footage was saw was from an older build?

But, then again, they did say that the game was only in pre-alpha status atm.

That's the same as the trailer on the Starcraft 2 website. There's a downloadable divx version there (click on Movies) that's much higher quality.

I'm assuming everyone agrees this is Raynor?
Chris Metzen, the creative-director, confirmed Raynor is coming back, so it is a reasonable guess.

There is also concept art of Mengsk, Kerrigan and Zeratul.

He looks almost like Arcturus Mengsk. Then again I can't remember if Mengsk died in Starcraft. I also can't remember whether or not he was in Starcraft or Brood War. I'm pretty sure he died though. I should really replay that game, the last time I played through it was in 2000.

No, he didn't die. Kerrigan left him alive at the end of BW. If she killed all remaining protoss/terran she would have no one to play with later.

That's true, he does look a lot like Mengsk. Except he looks too badass to be Mengsk. Mengsk doesn't die in Brood War afaik. Raynor saves him from the UED after they annihilate the Dominion and I can't remember him dying, though he and everyone else are all underneath the sole of Kerrigan's boot at the end of BW.

Yes, so when SC II starts, Mengsk and Artanis will be much weaker than Kerrigan, who controls the entire zerg swarm. Both will be annihilated very quickly if she decides she wants to attack. Zeratul and Raynor may have their own forces, but not enough to deal with Kerrigan's. Seems like the protoss have really used their time well, the number of new protoss units is incredible.

The thing is, Kerrigan already defeated everyone. She routed the UED, Protoss, and the fragmented remnants of Raynor's and Mengsk's forces at the end of Brood War all at the same time in a massive fleet and ground battle (the cinematic was hawt). I can't remember what the Protoss's deal is, because so many people die so quickly in Brood War, but there aren't very many of them in hiding, god knows how the Terran are doing, and there are a shit-ton of Zerg swarming everywhere.

Also, isn't Artanis dead? edit: nvm, thinking of Aldaris

I'm really interested to see where the storyline goes. Brood War had a HUGE cliffhanger ending, after Kerrigan essentially annihilates everyone.

"Once again, I stand atop the broken bodies of my enemies, victorious, but not unscarred. The Earth-borne Directorate has been destroyed, and the Overmind lies dead and trampled beneath the ashes of Char. As for my unlikely allies, I think I should allow them reprieve. For in time, I will seek to test their resolve, and their strengths. They will all be mine in the end. For I am the Queen of Blades, none shall ever dispute my rule again."
-Kerrigan

/melts from anticipation

Oh well. I've been waiting for half of my life (I'm 18, I was 9 when I bought Starcraft), I'll keep on waiting another year or two to find out what happens.

/me is excited :O I hope they keep using those screens at the start of each mission. I love those.

Wasn't the ending of the Zerg campaign in Brood War a news broadcast ABOUT how Kerrigan pwned everything? Cause that would imply that there's still something left.

Not a news broadcast, it was just Kerrigan's words.

I swear that in one the SC games, one of the campaign's ended with some sort of news broadcast about how everything is destroyed. Am I just crazy?

Also, hey, maybe SC2 is a "prequel"

If I remember correctly, the news report was about how the Terran Empire was growing.

Nope.

"Before the loss of Aiur, veteran protoss warriors who had been crippled in battle could volunteer to continue their service by being transplanted into dragoon exoskeletons. Now, the dragoons of the past are all but gone. The sacred shrine that was dedicated to the creation of the dragoons was infested by the zerg and lost along with the protoss homeworld itself."

The ending of the first Terran campaign (Starcraft) has a news piece showing a speech Mengsk gives now that he has taken over.
The ending of the second Terran campaign (Brood War) has a 'news' piece showing how the UED (forces from Earth) have taken over the Zerg Overmind.

some Korean nublet came in to my store today and asked if we had SC2 in stock already.....

I wonder how much they were really working on it during those four years. If this is all they really have done, it couldn't have been much!

Well, I don't know about that. I must admit that I was looking forward to a new race, but I don't want to make that some kind of rule where sequels need to have X more races, as that would get ridiculous.

The Korean press release mentioned a new race and they got everything else right. It's possible that they're waiting to unveil the new race at a future point in time.

I remember playing a bonus mission on Starcraft 1, it mentioned Terran fusing Protoss and Zerg together to make the hybrid race.
