Oh so I guess this is a joke too?

it was a blatent joke for crying out loud, shows how clever you are
We have a paradox on our hands.

You sure showed me!

Claiming to have had personal prayers answered and then taking me to task for my stupidity seems a little incongruous. It doesn't matter, my point still stands - many theists use that fallacy to justify their faith, and to me your sentence sums them up nicely.

Denying the big bang is like denying that the world goes round the sun. Theres tons of evidence for it, but there are still some "flat-earthers" who deny it.

Well good for those theists because i never once said that the prayer justified my faith, not to mention again, that the sentence had no meaning, because it was a ****ing joke, it that registering ok?

What if Jesus made the big bang, and accidentally made the earth?

What if the flying spaghetti monster did? What if Mr. Hankey Poo Did? What if...... I did? What if Zues, Godzilla, and Mothra all joined teams and made it? What if the cookie monster did it?

I'm really not sure why these Christian creationists get hung up about the literal interpretation of God creating the universe. Pretty much every religion have creation myths but you don't find their followers jumping up and down about the sanctity of them in the face of scientific progress.

I say worry about how it is going to be in 100 years, not how it was 4.5 billion years ago.

We will worry about how it will be in 100 years, but were also going to get pissed off when people make retarded claims(Like the earth is 6,000 years old).

Who makes those claims? The idea is 350 years old, and was beleived true by many Europeans in the 16th century. Welcome to the 21st...

Something like 40% of the US population thinks the earth is less than 6000 years old......

According to a 2006 Gallup poll,[29] about 46% of Americans believe in strict creationism, concurring with the statement that "God created man pretty much in his present form at one time within the last 10,000 years,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creationism#United_States

in contrast only 5% of australians believe in young earth creationism
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creationism#The_western_world_outside_the_United_States

most startling of all is that creationism seems to be only popular in the US:

A British survey of 103 Roman Catholic priests, Anglican bishops and Protestant ministers/pastors showed that:

* 97% do not believe the world was created in six days.
* 80% do not believe in the existence of Adam and Eve.

if the clergy rejects creationism what does that say about the rest of the citizens

By any measure, the United States remains a highly religious nation, compared to other developed countries. Its citizens tend to hold more conservative beliefs. For example, the percentage of adults who believe that "the Bible is the actual word of God and it is to be taken literally, word for word" is 5 times higher in the U.S. than in Britain. Church attendance is about 4 times higher in the U.S. than it is in Britain. 1 Similarly, according to one opinion poll, belief that "Human beings developed from earlier species of animals..." is much smaller in the United States (35%) than in other countries (as high as 82%).

I don't get religion, man. Shouldn't evolution, amoung other things, have been the final nail it's ideological coffin? Why do people go to such ridiculous lengths to justify the unjustifiable? It makes no sense..it's never made sense, there are perfectly legitimate explanations for our origins and how to live our daily lives.........****!

because rationality threatens their way of life ...would you want to embrace something that pretty much says your entire life was a series of meaningless events tempered by a belief in something that doesnt exist?

Yea, it's pretty frustrating. When I hangout with the religious members of my family, I am literally biting my tough. It takes all my will power to not burst out and yell " Don't you see how ****ing ridiculous this is, you're entire way of life is one huge contradiction...you realize that food is going to give you nourishment regardless of whether or not you ask the sky for it. right? Here I'll show you( eats food). Hmm im actually full and i have a lot more energy....believe it or not and im just spewing out ideas here...perhaps gaining nourishment from foods has more to do with the digestive system then crossing your damn fingers!!!"
PS, i understand there is a lot more to religion then this, this is merely an example.

Anyway, I've decided that if im going to spend more time with them im not participating in anymore religious activities.

Can someone do me a favour? Site the section of the bible that says its the inherit word of god, thanks in advance:).

well you should accept them despite their beliefs ...my parents are catholic and mentioned whether my kids would be baptized ..I said that I'd give them a choice later in life but that wasnt going to impose a belief system on them without at least giving them the complete picture (warts and all) which isnt possible with young kids...they havent mentioned it since because I gave them a reason to respect my decision

Oh i love them, they're the part of my family im closest to, outside of my parents. I would never cut them out of my life( that would be pretty childish). I just don't want to go to church with them anymore. I realize my quote was really over the top, but that's honestly how i feel sometimes. It's frustrating watching them pray and talk about their religion etc. when i have to keep my opinions to myself.

I understand all too well ..I have american cousins who voted for and support GW Bush :O

...but I agree I would draw the line at going to church

honestly I thought it would have been the majority of them

its really disconcerting knowing that these are the kinds of people who essentially run the country.....

I hate the phrase "believing in evolution". It's a goddamn scientific theory, not some story someone dreamt up while high on shrooms. You either accept it based on the evidence that supports it or you don't which gives you the obligation to propose a theory that better fits that evidence than the current model of evolution does. You can't fucking believe in evolution. I would have definitely answered "No, I don't believe in evolution".

As for this topic: neither can you believe in the Big Bang, it's stupid.

I dont follow, Ryan. Saying you believe in evolution is saying you agree with the scientific principal. Whats wrong with that?

no he's saying there should be no "belief" at all ...facts are facts ..there are no ifs, buts and ors

He is saying it is a fact that evolution exists, so your belief really means shit. However, what you can have a belief in is how evolution works which is what the theory of evolution tries to explain.

Afterall, we have a "Theory of Gravity". Omgz gravity is only a theory! Doesn't exist! I'm gonna go levitate! The theory of gravity only explains how gravity works. Is Gravity present? Yes, and that's a fact. Same with evolution.

Now to throw into some more mindless stuff into this debate....
I hate when people ask "Omgz why havn't we evolved!". Well think about it. Why would evolution take place? To allow better survival in our enviroment. Do we need to evolve to better survive our enviroment? Not really, because we change our enviroment to fit us. Why would we need to evolve?

ok, thats what I thought he was conveying, wasnt sure....

Basically we've ****ed up evolution by horribly distorting pretty much every other lifeform and our environment to suit our needs.

I go to a Catholic school, we teach evolution. I don't know what I should vote for, there is no 'other.'
