The Illustrated Story of Iso-Town

Well, the weekend is here... And you all know what that means. Iso-Town! Yay.

I was about to post these earlier when I went downstairs for a snack, and saw my brother watching a movie called Lord of War. I was hooked at the sight of guns, and stayed hooked by the harsh but true view of our corrupt world. I recommend anybody see the movie.

But anyway, here I have for you 11 new panels, which I felt compulsed to produce while under the influence of Aphex Twin ;)

Ahh the steady progress continues. Woodworking of the roof at the gas station is looking nice, and the wall of the new building expands.

it662el.png

Oooh, the surveyors. I don't know what to expect, the last time they showed up, nothing seemed to happen soon after. And then a giant plot is created on the other side of the street. So let's just wait and see.

it678qu.png

The surveyors are still surveying. Are they looking at Ian and Paul's houses?
Oh and check it out. The roof for the gas thingies is being built there...

it682bt.png

All nice and boarded up! Looking spiffy. And what's this? Some aluminum sheets and stuff.
The surveyors are still there too. Hmm.

And it looks like there's a big pile of metal in the construction site of the new building.

it698ds.png

Ah, I see. Metal roofing there. Look's nice. And the perimeter of the wall for the new building is done.

it700wi.png

More sheets of metal. I think the whole thing is going to have a metal roof.

Man! Cement being poured already! This is really great.

it710nh.png

Ahh the roofing is in progress. The metal be easy to paint, for an attractive look. And look at that, the walls in the new building have been lined with metal. Will this have an all-metal roof construction? That's a first for this little town.

it722hi.png

Progress progress progress... There's our prized metal framework being built.

it734hx.png

Oooh, roofing done and parking lot being painted at the gas station! And what's this!? Oh. My. God. SCAFFOLDING!! This is truely a milestone for the town. Scaffolding is going to be one of the biggest tools for construction in this town, and it's going to look awesome with buildings that are several stories high. (For those that don't know what I'm talking about, it's that metal wireframe stuff with the wood... It allows workers to get up to higher levels of a building while it's under construction. I'm sure you've seen scaffolding before)

it748tq.png

Pretty! Look how vibrant that is! This is so great, I'm really liking the direction this town is going.

it756eq.png

Painting done! All's left on the roof is the sign! Speaking of which, I wonder what it will be named? Maybe after someone. Maybe some random person could offer a suggestion.

Check it out! Tiling for the floor is being laid at the new building! It's definitely some kind of store or resturaunt.

Well! I hope you enjoyed your weekly fix of Iso-Town! More will come this weekend if I am up to it, afterall I'm in an especially good mood this weekend.

Thank you all so much for all your nice comments, it's the greatest feeling. I love you!

Edit: Oh, and sorry to those who are using 1024x768, it's probably a pain for you to have to scroll left and right to see the images... They will be sized down to normal soon. Which I don't like because it's harder to see. But oh well.

I'm at 1024 and the scrolling is only like a few pixels so don't worry about resizing.

You know, Ian doesn't have a car, but considering his surroundings I don't think he needs one o_O

YEHAH! WOOOO!

Awesome... are you going to do architexture? {i know i've spelt it wrong}

Yeah but that is a great way to spell it. (;

Well there goes my prediction out the window... :p

Heh, don't feel bad. It's just that an apartment complex wouldn't make much sense with the only thing done so far being a tiny diner. :p

*Starts pumping Lawyerfunds into a chemical refining company, and tells them to build a big smog-producing factory next to the houses, because it's cheap land and cheap labour, and everyone wins, especially the investors :D*

AWESOME!

Only wish it was interactive though. :E

Eurgh, that gas station roof is so bright, it's like toothpaste. Nice work though.

Gas Station name... how about Isso. Like Esso, just, you know. Isometric.

I vote for United Numbers Petrol Co.

*dodges stones*

I vote you build a factory! And a big block of run-down flats! Tax the m all to hellll!

-Angry Lawyer

Build a shopping mall, then have a zombie apocalypse.

Seriously, more events are needed! Police chases, godzilla, firefights, plagues of bats, alien invasions, nazi rallies, riots, beatdowns, gigantic gorrillas, chainsaw massacres, tornadoes, hurricanes, plane crashes, punch-ups, drunks, prostitutes, window-smashing, vandalism, etc!

Yeah, that was a stroke of genius by Kupo there, I think I'll use that.

And Sulk, I know man, but I just feel that it disturbs the peaceful feeling of the town, you know? I'll have more stuff happening when it's bigger, I know that, because I have some events planned.

I don't know, for some reason things like that wouldn't fit right in the style that I'm presenting this... Maybe I need to try it out to see.

Well, a lot of that stuff would only work when the city's a lot bigger, but you did some cool things at the beginning, like Sam stealing all the bricks and getting arrested. That's what I mean.

Is that 4 people including the surveyors?

They're the best! \m/

I've been wanting to draw them up close. I picture them as like, agents. Or lawyers... Angry lawyers. I've got an image in my head.

Needs more residential first. Have someone invent nanotech so the government can build a suburb overnight.

Yay, another vote for the residential complex idea....kinda. :)

There needs to be more industry for people to want to live there. When the gas station or new building is finished, more houses and apartments will pop up.

That may be true, but there needs to be more people for the industries to survive. Gas stations and fast food outlets work in the current setup because Iso town is no more than a place to stop for tourists on their way to some other destination.

Buildings like a Casino or an Arena may or may not work in Iso Town. The population is approximately 2 people, which means revenues would be horrible. However, on the flip side, it could boost tourism (which means a hotel of some kind would need to be built).

I'm curious to see how you'll handle this.

It is obvious more residential buildings are needed to give the town an actual population. From there we can have more buildings spring up to serve the needs of the residents

I always build a powerplant first. At least some power lines would be pretty cool, and a sewer system, maybe some garbage cans out front, and mailboxes. Utilities, etc.

I think the houses and businesses should come about the same time, but houses first if it comes down to it. Because, right now you don't have enough citizens to operate even the fast food place.

Those are some good ideas, thanks. The only thing I don't like about power lines is that the wires interfere with the drawing, and 1 pixel is too thick for a wire. I think we'll just have to assume the power is underground to keep things simple.

Heh, it's not like the town is 50 miles away from nearest civilization. Right now Isotown is just a small block a couple miles from a larger city, which it currently lives off of to survive. Eventually, the town can function on it's own when it expands more.

What would be really awesome is if someone else on the forum could do isometric art too, and we could work on a city together. But pixel artists are so few and far between :(

Good point on the power lines...

I kind of figured the town was actually a suburb, but recent posts had led me astray.

I'm not a brilliant pixel artist, But I doodled an entire town over about 1.5 weeks of math class, thanks to this thread, so I have the isometric view down. In fact, that helped teach me a few basic thins about perspective. I'll take a crack at a house tomorrow. At the veryy least your critique would be most valuable.

You have no idea how happy that makes me :D :D

I was starting a similar town too during lunch in this guy's class, but he booted me out for not doing classwork. It was the perfect sidewalk, the colors, the corners, the ledges to the street...

PERFECT I TELL YOU!

/me begins to shake and rock back and forward...

It'll be awesome when it comes
