I know some linux people when they really want to play a video game that's not supported by linux or cedega, they run a stripped down copy of windows without explorer, and use their own shell built just for that game.
They can't check things like this. Ofcourse it is fine, I've always felt that playing on LAN with the same copy just for an instance ( no single player, no online play ) is fine.

For frames per second in Half-life 2, first you need your console enabled. Options > Keyboard Advanced
Then in console ( use ~/` to open it ) type cl_showfps 1 ( net_graph 1 ,2 ,or 3 works also )
I would recommend getting a Socket 939 motherboard for better upgrading options.
Get a 3500+ 90nm Athlon 64bit processor, it is just before the price jump, and would be a great overclocker.
Unless you are planning on getting another stick of 1GB ram, I would get 2x512mb.
