Try both and use whichever you feel comfortable with. Both Discreet and SoftImage offer free lite versions of the software so take them both for a test drive and see what you think.
It's always a good idea to get started out like this. Screwing around and making things up as you go along lets you get comfortable with the tools before moving onto something complex where you're replicating a shape. Good luck, you're off to a good start.
Here you go Eddie. Sorry for the delay. It's very easy to do and there are several ways to accomplish it, but I feel this is the easiest way to get started with it.
Start by making the shape of the handle on the flattest part between the two rounded parts. I usually just use a box and extrude...
The foregrip, handle, and stock have many wasted faces. Cleaning those areas up along with the barrel should give him plenty of polys to finish up detailing.
I generally don't add things like that after I model the shape. I usually model the grooves by hand as I go so I have more control over the polygon usage and cleanliness of the mesh. However, either of the two above suggestions will get the job done, but leave a lot of cleaning up to do in the end.
I would hope that the people here are mature enough not to call someone a "n00b" for asking a question, so you don't need to worry about that.
I can't speak for the other packages, but 3ds Max has the Optimize and MultiRes modifiers. They do work, but it is always much better to go in and...
Relying so much on smoothing for the cylinders is fine as long as you're looking at it from the side, but when you see it from the rear all of the smoothing in the world isn't going to change those sharp edges. I am assuming, however, that this is for a first person game and will be seen from...
Can we have a wireframe? I simply can not see how that is over 2000 polys, so perhaps with a wireframe we could point out some areas to optimize. Anyway, it's a little plain and doesn't flow together nicely, particularly where the stock meets the body.
Low poly or not, the scope needs more than 6 sides to look presentable. The trigger guard and trigger should be wider and the handle looks a little sloppy. I think it just needs to be rounded a little better at the back to make it look right. Other than the optimization issue which you already...
I suggest really learning the basics of the program before you attempt to create a specific object. Play around with the tools and learn modeling fundamentals. If you want to just dive in, start small and simple and don't expect to be a great 3D artist overnight. Try modeling some objects on...
Let's see a wireframe so we can help you optimize it a little better. Either way, use a geosphere for the body if you haven't already. It is much more efficient and the difference is negligible, especially when smoothed.
Utilities > More... > Polygon Counter. Make sure your model is in triangles by converting to editable mesh to get the true triangle count. I suggest adding it to your utilities button group for easy access.
I'll crit the model and give you some pointers when I have some more time later.
I don't have Max on the laptop that I'm using now, but when I get back to my PC later today or tomorrow I'll take some pictures and explain it for you. Unless, of course, someone else does it before me. Hang in there.
You're off to a great start. I don't have any crits, but I will say that you should definitely stick to it and keep working. You have a lot of potential and you will only get better with time and practice.
It looks pretty good to me, but I have two things to point out. First, there is no reason to model the barrel area of the weapon. It's silly to waste polygons there. I can't understand why almost all of the weapons posted here have the inside of the barrel modeled, wasting at least a hundred...
Impressive. It has a great sense of form and has smooth and flowing edges. No crits here except perhaps modeling some of the more important ear details.
This is the barrel of some type of M4A1 variant, but I think it's very similar to the M16 aside from the length.
