AvP3

Just played a few rounds. It's horribly generic and reeking of consolitis. The Alien is way too overpowered and the Predator's a gimp. Marine's just a bore. Do yourself a favor and get a copy of AvP 2 instead.

Oh my God, what the **** did I just try to play?

Movement felt jerky as ****, takes forever to join servers, controls feel odd, feels unbalanced as ****... feels like every other recently released Rebellion PC port.

I think it's safe to say that the original AVP was basically their only good game.

I'm downloading the demo. I have no expectations from the game. SEGA doesn't know shit about the gaming industry. They could beat L4D series using Colonial Marines any day.
F*cking THIS. Just let Gearbox get back to Colonial Marines now that AVP3 is finally f*cking finished so we can have four player xenomorph blasting coop fun.

Is it really that bad?

Edit: Well, **** it. I cancelled it. It doesn't worth my time.

The Free for all game mode makes it rather boring. It's the one multiplayer mode I avoid in all games. The mouse control also seems extremely unresponsive. I experience a big delay and have trouble aiming.

ya I can't stand FFA either
haven't tried the demo yet but from what I've seen (broadcasts) it looks pretty good
first impressions to come...

Downloaded it on Xbox360

Impressions:

Fairly disappointed at Rebellion's choice to have DM for the one and only gamemode in the Demo. I feel this was a really bad move: teams were what AvP1/2 were about.

Looks great: animations are smooth, level detail is excellent, it's pretty easy to get around as all classes. No complaints here.

Gameplay leaves a little to be desired, especially as Marines. I felt the Alien was way too overpowered. Marines have no NVG, no flares (at least in the demo), and very little chance to avoid being absolutely raped by Aliens or Predators. I think this is mostly at the fault of the gametype, where a close knit team of marines might be a formidable enemy. It's very annoying to get melee'd in this game: it stuns you, disorientates you, and does not give you a chance to respond - again, especially as a marine.

Killing blow moves are very interesting: your enemy has no chance of escaping, but it leaves you totally vulnerable to everyone else. I was literally in a line of about 4 aliens who would keep using killing blows on the alien in front of them, only to have the same thing done to them a moment later. Very effective maneuver if no other enemies nearby. Marines, unfortunately, have no killing blow moves (to my knowledge).

Marine weapons involved flamethrower, shotgun, pulse rifle, smart gun, and some sniper rifle. I didn't live long enough to use anything but the pulse rifle and shotgun, but I saw another marine use a flamethrower very effectively against aliens.

Controls were fairly intuitive after a few games. I'm still not entirely sure how to use the predator weapons (they need to be found on the ground, you do not spawn with them, at least in DM). Predators only spawn with wristblades. The predator vision type was removed (only thermal and pheromone visions exist) and the Aliens no longer have their alternative vision for darkness (not that I think anyone will miss it).

PC users have complained of shoddy controls: likely suffering from consolitus. I have no experience with the PC demo so I can't say.

Matchmaking is not as much of a pain on XBL as I heard it was on the PC. Apparently in the XBL demo, you can not join games already in progress. I am really, really annoyed by this. Joining games already in progress is an ancient feature found in some of the oldest MP games. I hope very much that this is changed for the full release: otherwise this might be the one thing that prevents me from buying it.

Choosing DM as the demo gametype was a huge mistake. I hope the other gamemodes aren't as spectacularly crappy.

6/10 as it stands. No flares, forced DM, no joining games in progress, and totally annoying melee is killing this game.

Well this sounds like a disappointment. I won't know for like 9-10 hours, but I'll give it a shot.

I just tried to play it, but it was laggy as shit and the mouse movement had a slight delay to it.

As much as I want a good AVP sequel to play, I think this is all kind of funny. Mostly because they will end up losing a lot of money for releasing this demo.

Just played the demo with every species and ****ing loved it. Takes a bit to get used to the new Alien and Pred setups, but once I did I was sneaking up on marines and tailing through the chest and blowing Aliens off the roof. Loving it.

After playing it some more with some bros, I've discovered a trend.

Aliens > Predators
Predators > Marines
Marines > Aliens

this is wildly accusative, of course, and i have little non-anecdotal evidence to support it.

I'm actually going to change my score on this game and blame it on just being a terrible, terrible demo.

8/10. I'm going to wait a few weeks after initial release to see what they change/intend to change before I buy it. The gameplay mechanics are solid. Melee is rock/paper/scissors. I think each class plays like the fluff. It's a good game: but never, ever play DM.

Apparently the code in the demo is almost a year old. :|

According to some post on the AVP steam forums atleast.

I was never a big fan of the rock paper scissors concept in games. Sure it's ok in a limited sense in RTS games but, it's weird in an FPS. I mean even if it's not cut-and-dried per se, it's still disappointing to say... be a predator... see an alien... and know you're automatically at a disadvantage. In the original it was basically that Aliens and Marines had their advantages and were good in numbers, but Predators were by far the best and you'd only have one in a match. That made sense because it was always one Predator vs an army (until the AvP movie) and, while being so powerful, relied on its skill to be a good hunter.

Now granted that's a really lore filled view of it, but that's just how it was and that was an aspect I liked. Honestly I'll have to play it whenever I get home to see how it all works. My opinion at this point really isn't relevant.

You mean... it took more than a year to make this game?

Just played some more as an Alien and Marine. Don't understand the hate for it. It plays beautifully to me. I have had a little trouble connecting to games, but the final release has a server browser, so that won't be an issue.

Only the melee is RPS. The classes are fairly balanced if you play them to their styles. I was just ranting because I kept dying to a certain class. In the demo, only 2 predators per game of 8. They are unique individuals and are definitely stronger in melee than both classes.

The one shottedness going around is pretty annoying, but I've learned to be aware of my surroundings (you don't want to know how many times I caught an alien tracking me when I just randomly turn around).

I think it's quite nice to sneak up on someone from behind and be able to take them out with a one hit kill, rewards you for stalking your prey.

Also, announcement from Rebellion:-

We've identified an issue with the matchmaking system that is causing the very long wait times to get into a PC game, and hope to release an update shortly which addresses this.

In the meantime players can ease connection issues by getting together with a group of players before entering matchmaking. Inviting friends or joining players via the Steam overlay will help work around the issue. If you need help finding players you can join one of the community groups, e.g. http://steamcommunity.com/groups/AVPI.

In addition to the matchmaking functionality the full game features dedicated servers, server browsers, and the ability to host games directly.

Of course you did. You are the local, raging fanboy here.

Whatever, just enjoyed the game pal, nothing fanboyish about that. If I had found it to be anything like the mess you described I would have said.

How is the MP for the first? I've only played AVP2

Haha, wow. Way to contribute absolutely nothing to the thread.

Zombieturtle: the MP is very visceral and death is pretty much everywhere. You will not live very long unless you choose your fights carefully --- unless a fight finds you.

I already have made my contribution. Learn to ****ing read.

Well even with my crap connection I found a game within 30 seconds. The matchmaking doesnt seem too bad so far, though I would have liked to be able to choose my side.

I started off as a marine, which is about as basic as you can get. Run around and shoot anything that moves. I think they captured the essence of being a marine very well. Unless you get the jump on a xenomorph, their speed and powerful attacks will make quick work of you, so you have to be careful of what you are walking into (working with other marines helps). The predator I only saw a few times, and he was preoccupied making killing him easy. I sucked it up for the first few matches, but I still had a good time.

Graphics are... pretty good. I really like the movement of the xenomorphs, but the predator doesnt look that great in motion. Sound was lackluster in my opinion, though this may be because I playing Mass Effect 2 and Bad Company 2.

Overall its something I will likely go back and play, though there are more enticing multiplayer shooters out there right now.

It seems they made an update because it's easy to join a game now.
It's not that awful, but it's certainly not good either.
Once you turn on the auto-wall climb for the alien, it can be quite fun, but the alien is absurdly powerful.

Clunky, I'll be waiting for an Xmas sale probably.

How the heck do you use the Predators canon?

Just played an alien, and the melee is so damn awkward. It's gonna take a while to really get my bearings with this game, if at all.

What are you policing everything i say on here now?

Hold down focus wherever you go, then pounce when the enemy has a glowy aura around them.

Basically melee is as follows:

If you see your enemy preparing a heavy attack, launch a light attack to interrupt.
If you see your enemy launching a light attackp, hold your block up.
If you see your enemy blocking, launch a heavy attack.

Or just spam light attack as most people fail to realize block even exists.

I understand the mechanics of it, I just wish that the camera stood still and was less...laggy, I guess. It'll take me a few plays to really get used to it.

One major problem that a lot of people have been complaining about is how much your camera gets knocked around. I guess removing the camera knock might make things more like a counterstrike knife fight than a interspecies fight to the death.

How to melee as an alien:

HISS HISS HISS HISS HISS

Press E

You have to find the weapon on the ground before you can switch to it. When I finally found it and fired it for the first time, I didn't get to experiment with its damage because I got a tail jammed through my damn torso.

It's ok but nothing special.

The alien attacks seem to auto-aim at everything. I killed 100 predators because they were standing there doing a finishing move. The jumping's consolized. No crouch.

The graphics aren't really top of the range, so it runs smoothly.
