Building comp., lots of help needed.

Well, post EVERYTHING you've got to together so far and we'll go from there.

Sure. I think this is it:

Motherboard

Processor

RAM

Seagate Drive

Raptor Drive

Sound Card

Case

120 mm. Case Fans

Hard Drive Fan

DVD Drive

Heh, I'm dumb. Forgot I still need to look at 90 mm. case fans. I'll go do that after I finish this.

Is that Raptor better for running games and such fast than the Seagate? If so, I'll watch DVD's and play games on the Raptor and run programming, flash, install programs like Windows and things like that on the Seagate.

Every disk I use will ask the harddrive I want to put it on? Is it really simple, like click this or click that? Or do you have to run through a bunch of files?

Well, one thing I see out of the box is that the DVD drive doesn't match the case, so that's gonna stick out like a sore thumb. Also, I'd put my OS on the Raptor, it'll make Windows run a whole lot faster. You can put for DVD's on the Seagate. Just think of the Raptor as a fast storage space so everything you NEED to run fast put on the Raptor (i.e. games, Windows, etc.).

The installing to each drive is easy. Just install like you normally would, but when the scrren comes up and says "WHERE DO YOU WANT TO SAVE THE GAME?" all you do is select the HDD you want it on and click Next. You'll see when you actually do it.

Thanks for pointing the DVD drive out. What's your OS? Operating System? So the Seagate's just like a backup thing, for DVD's. Kind of weird how it's more expensive than the Raptor, huh? I'll still install small programs like flash on it though, I don't want to end up overwhelming the Raptor.

We face yet another conflict. I looked at the 90 mm. case fans, and I'm going to take one of these two:

1

2

Number one not only sounds good, but has reviews to confirm it'll work well. Number two, if I'm not mistaken, has a better air flow and is only a teensy bit louder, but has no reviews to make sure it's going to work. I'm thinking it might be better to play it safe with number one, but tell me if two would work fine.

Edit: Wait, to burners only burn, or are they DVD drives with the ability to burn?

Actually the second one is the more quiet of the two. It is a bit more expensive though, so take your pick.

DVD burners are DVD drives with the ability to burn. You will never find a drive that writes but doesn't read.

What he means is that if you want certain programs to load fast, like games and windows afore mentioned, then you should put them on the Raptor. Everything else put onto the Seagate; use it as your storage drive, for downloads, and that kind of stuff so that the Raptor doesn't get fragmented more than necessary.

Hmm... It's only like $13, I'm fine with that. Think they'll work, then? If they don't I'll just send them back and get a couple of the first one.

In that case, would this fit with my other stuff?

Okay, what won't fit in that tower. ;)
I think that it would be better than the beige DVD drive. I would look into getting a combo drive(DVD and CD-RW) in addition to the burner. Take a look at this
Still go with the burner though; the convenience of having two burning drives is just so...convenient! :D

About the fans, that's just my cheapness shining through. :| Choose fans that push the most air around and make the least amoung of noise.

P.S. I just realized how dang awesome Shens' sig is.
:|

I'm tired, I need to go to bed. I'll look at more DVD and burners, CD, whatever, I need sleep. Thanks for helping.

Need to find a dang thing that will fit in my case.

Choose fans that push the most air around and make the least amoung of noise.

So I figured. Should I search on SATA interface DVD drives? Would they work much faster? And if somebody could look at my case and see what fricking size they need to be, that would be great.

i dont think there is such thing as a sata cd drive afaik

I'm not getting CD, I'm getting DVD. And look. Hey Boltress, I think I'd like to have just one drive, a DVD one. But I'll get a combo if it comes to it.

Wow, you're overpaying for that combo drive right there. You can easily find a quality one for $40.00.

EDIT: Try this one... 400 review @ 5/5, it can't be bad

I can't remember, did I link that one? Will it fit in my case? If it does, I'll get it.

Is it possible to put in a DVD or something and select a burning option that will fry the disk?

All drives are designed to fit to a standard form. 3.5" for hard drives and floppy, and 5.25" for optical drives(cd/dvd). You should not have to worry about anything not fitting into your case, especially one that large.
Just get a DVD burner if you only want one drive, that'll do everything you need.

You can't 'fry' a disk while burning.

I mean, like a DVD like Lord of the Rings or something, I know it can't do that. If that DVD burner will work, then all I need to look at are some 90 mm. fans and we're set.

Well, do you have an OS? If you don't you'll need to buy one of those too.

Windows XP is cheap now... $70 on Newegg.

What's Xandros?

Edit: Sorry for my rediculous post. I think this is the one I have on the Dell, and I'm very happy with it. If that's it, I want to get another.

I was looking, and what type of monitor is best for gaming?

Buy an OS you say?

Well, that's all down to opinion. Some will say LCD's and their flat-panel seckseyness, and others will say a plain CRT. Myself... I don't know. I've never had a flat-panel screen, but OH, do they look hot!

So, really, I can't make a desicion on that. I'd say go with a huge flat-screen CRT -- they're cheap.

LCDs are getting pretty good, I mean I just got mine yesterday and I'm really pleased. 19" and it is so nice to use compared to old crusty crt that was really fuzzy around the edges. Gaming is a new experience, because the monitor is so much bigger, even though teh resolution is the same, you are more immersed in the action. I played cs:s, UT2k4 and the F.E.A.R demo last night and they are all so much better, no ghosting what so ever.

Just thought I would give my opinion. If you are serious about getting one, then take some time choosing one thats right for you as there is alot of variation in performance, price etc so check out reviews and try and what I did by finding someone who has the monitor you want, and speaking to them online about it, get a first hand review of it.

I like the LCD's, but I've heard a lot of cases about dead pixels. This Dell one doesn't, and if I get one, I hope it doesn't, either.

If it will fit, as the previous ones, havn't, I'll get that DVD drive. I have to go out, so I'll post some stuff later.

I like the shape of the monitor itself. Looks very nice, apart from the price tag.

:p

I'm really not sure, but I think it's bad :)

Nobody has actually yet confirmed that the DVD drive linked earlier will work.

Yes, it'll "work." All CD/DVD drives are standard size meaning they'll all fit into any case.

Ok. It's just you and and Boltress said the other two I tried wouldn't fit in it. I'll go look at some 90 mm. fans (we didn't already choose some, did we?), and is there anything else?

I never said that it wouldn't fit! I said that there is nothing that would not fit into that case.(notice the double negative) And I also said that DVD/CD players are a standard size and will fit in everything.

Get some 90mm fans that glow. That is your new assignment.

"Assignment," heh. Get some quality blue (or whatever color you'd like) neon fans... they look amasing.

Yes sir, but may I have permission to buy ones that do not glow, such as these? I think neon ones might start to annoy me, playing Half-Life and having this big blue glow in the corner of my eye.

The novelty of glowing fans wears off pretty quick. If you think that they will annoy you, then you will just be best getting ones that don't glow. Also those fans that you linked to will be good but aren't that quiet. Not sure if the noise of your pc is a issue with you but I would personnally look for some quieter ones.

Also to the person who asked what ghosting was, its a problem with TFT's thats often also referred to as blurring. Its basically in fast pased games and movies, you may find that the panel can't 'keep up' with the action and it will leave a faint image of the previous frame behind long enough for you to see it. Its not really an issue with TFT's today as they are very quick, like the one i just recently bought is rated at 8ms (See Sig). There is no ghosting in CS:S and UT2k4 and HL2 and movies are nice and sharp.

LoL.
I was so just kidding. It's your computer, buy whatever the heck you want. ;)

That fan looks fine though.

Yep, the fan blows good air for such a fan, although that will be a bit loud.

Get something with a high contrast ratio for an LCD, somethin like 600:1 or higher.

We're not getting anywhere. Those are LOUDER than the fans before and they move LESS air.

Try these, or these, or these.

Huh? I must be reading the information wrong, then. I'll take the first one. Was 90 mm. fans the last required thing? Anything that you just recommend I have?

Thanks gweedodog, but I think I'm happy with the monitor I've chosen.

Whatever the Hell my ATI is Going to be

*Wipes hands* Well, I think that's my computer. Please check it all out guys and tell me what you think I should change if anything. I'm mainly worried about the operating system. With that done, I have a couple more questions:

Antivirus. What should I get?

The harddrives are sperate, but they do both link to the motherboard or something, right?

Are any of these companies going to give me crap, or is it just 'I bought your product, we're done'?

Drivers... they'res a lot of them for a lot of different things, as I've heard. With the stuff I have, what things am I going to need to download, and where from?

Uhh, why get an SLi compatable motherboard if you want an ATi card?? Makes no sense... If you want to get an ATi card, save the money and get a normal 1xPCI-e slot motherboard.

And about the drivers, everything that needs drivers usually comes with their CDs.

Very nice set-up you have there... that's going to last a long time.

Anti-virus: click here (scroll down top the bottom of the page). This will be all you need. Yes, it's free, but that means nothing... paid anti-virus programs, imo, are rip-offs. This program has had A+ reviews up the ass.

Yes, the two harddrives link to the motherboard in two different places (the motherboard manual will show you where each goes -- not too hard). You'll need the cables to hook them up but since your motherboard is "retail," it'll come with all the wires, cords, etc. you need.

Most PC-part companies care about you as a customer. Since PC parts are expensive, they'll do whatever they can to keep you buying from them. Happy customers = more revenue for them.

The only things you need drivers for are the motherboard, sound card, and video card, which are all "retail," so all the drivers will come on a handy CD for you to install. Most likely, they'll be out-of-date so you might-as-well go ahead and forget the CD that they supplied (EXEPT the motherboard CD, I'll explain later) and download the drivers from the companies' sites'.

Asus's download page (motherboard company).
ATi's download page (video card company).
Creative's download page (sound card company).

However, you should install the motherboard drivers right when you boot up, otherwise, you won't be able to access the internet. Install those off the disc, and then update later.
