Company of Heroes = the best game ever?

I was planning to make a map that was very infantry based, so barely enough fuel to build the required buildings (or perhaps no fuel at all and give players 200 fuel to work with if that's possible).

Or a map with very little or no fuel, except a fuel depot in the center with a couple of high fuel points. That would be the key point of the map to hold where you can expect a lot of fighting.

I didn't notice! I'd love a 3v3, but NOT Hill 331.

I'm getting in RO now.

Remember, lots of essential upgrades (grenades are very important in infantry only combat) require fuel.

Also, Shaker, I wouldn't bet on it being noobfriendly at all. For DOW, to make terrain, you had to put out a grayscale elevation map, not the easiest thing in the world.

Ugh, too bad. I will try tho. Must ..... succeed!!

I am online right now btw. Add me.

That was cool. I really enjoyed that last match on Montargis Region. Laggy as hell but still a lot of fun. Howitzers rule. Gee-gee guys.

lots of fun. the lag was insufferable though.

Just had a great game :) Reminds me why I like axis...

Semois 1vs1, I was terror -> tiger ace but only used it at the very end. I started off very badly, losing the middle and west vps, but held the east completely with barbed wire. After yet another infantry wave of volkgrenadiers got slaughtered in mid I thought I was done for, until I managed to flank with a sqaud and take their bridge's Strategic point, effectively cutting off any resource generation for him :). Then my stugs came and annihilated mid, west, and though he put up a good fight with airborne, the combination of volkgrenadiers and stugs was just too tough for him to beat. Then I finally got enough xp for tiger ace, and that thing running around two-shotting AT guns convinced him to surrender with 200 pts left.

Has anyone by any chance figured a way to remove the ugly hud colors (blue/red)?

man i hate reading this thread when i'm at work and powerless to play COH

Yes, it is the greatest game to date. Hell, it surpasses Half-Life 2 in all aspects. Well, perhaps not the originality and storytelling factor, but god damn this game is great. If anyone would like to get a few games in as Axis, add me: PanzerSmurf, and I'll be sure to look you up if your online.

i wont play as axis but i'll play against you as allies ;D

Rather tempting to buy this game, but then I remember how bad it ran for me.

Oh well, Christmas is coming... more ram and a new gfx card!

Best RTS game ever indeed.

I decided to try out the SP demo, as my first impressions were from the MP Beta.

And god damn... the performance difference between the two is insane.
Goes from unplayable to completely playable, hell I can have everything on medium and it runs decently.

This is definitely on my Christmas list.

Funny little story, I was playing the Carentan mission, setting up the defenses and stuff.

And just when the timer runs out and the first tank and soldiers start heading towards the bridge... the battery on my mouse dies. :|
I didn't really notice until when I tried moving some AT squads around the lone tank, and realizing nothing was happening... and then I watched as the tank took out my defenses and the garrisoned troops.
D:... It was very fun though, had a blast doing Omaha.
It's incredible how immersive this is, considering it's an RTS.

The release/SP final demo has loads better optimization than the beta, game ran much better than I had hoped on my old comp. And of course on this shiny one its fine and dandy at max settings :D.

Holy ... I just got off playing the campaign mission where you have to hold Hill 137 against a massive invading German Army ... at the end of the first part, I had 2 riflemen squads holding the top of the mountain against two squads of Stormtroopers, two Panzer IV's and three squads of Grenadiers with 30 seconds left on the clock. Then they retreated past my army, leaving my measly 2 rifleman squads holding that hill ! :O

The next mission was a pain in the rear though, as - all - of the units left from the previous mission carry over, meaning that I had two Engineer squads near my (heavily damaged) HQ, one armoured car, and two rifleman units left on top of that hill, and the 105mm Howitzer on top of the hill. The only reason I won was due to the fact that they finally let you chose your own doctine. (Go Airbourne !)

I actually thought it was the last mission - it was so hard to hold that single innocent-looking hill !
Basically, I agree with Ennui totally - it's the best RTS in a long, long time !

I just won a multiplayer game where I came back from a 500 to 22 point deficit. It was absolutely amazing... they thought they'd won it, and suddenly paratroopers and anti tank guns started falling from the sky. It was so satisfying, because I knew the guy on the other side had to be so smug - but I could see through his facade. Machine gun nests surrounding every control point does not a good defense make.

I still love this game.

It's damn challenging, I still haven't won against the Skirmish AI yet. D:

I'm playing as Allies, and it almost seems like it has units already made at the start of the game.
10 minutes into the game and there's tanks and artillery all over my ass. D:

I'm playing the demo btw.

repiV and I kicked some more Kraut ass on Pointe du Hoc yesterday :) xlucidx, it's very fast paced.

Feck, I'm on that Hill mission part two also. Airbourne you say? Hmm. I'll give it another go, it's hard as hell.

Having a blast though.

EDIT

The 1.3 patch is online. It's almost 114 mb large but I had the fastest download evah with Relic online.

THQ (Tranj on the RelicNews boards which are too busy to find the link for you guys) has confirmed that another patch will come out on short notice. This will fix a couple of little bugs (ACs still get stuck on tanktraps for example) that have been missed by QA.

Uhg. I need to get back into this game. I played the beta non-stop, but I buy the game and stop playing. Wtf.

Woo! New patch gives me BSOD about half-way through downloading. GG.

repiV and I kicked some more Kraut ass on Pointe du Hoc yesterday :) xlucidx, it's very fast paced.

Yeah, I never was very good at RTSes... I usually just play skirmish/singleplayer modes with cheats. :p

But, I'm all for changes.

looks like they're having server-side issues with the new patch :|

While we're chatting about this, a quick question. A friend and I at school are CoH addicts, and we are having a friendly argument about best defenses.

As Germans, if you have to hold a building what units would you build? Now, optimal would of course be to place 3 squads of Grenadiers in the building, each squad armed with two MG42s, and an AT gun at each corner of the building. That is too damn expensive, and I'd like something practical.

I tried just one Grenadier squad (MG42+Panzerschreck), and a sniper, but I found they died too damn fast. What would you just is the best bang for your buck as an Axis defender with about eight or nine troops?

Defending a building from all sides? Well I'm by no means a pro at this game but what I've found so far is that AT guns are amazing, and the German AT guns have a pretty wide range iirc, so you could probably cover the whole perimiter with 3 of them. Why not just 2 MG squads in the building? Perhaps a sniper too. Why not field defenses like wire and hedgehogs?

Something like this...

Would help even more if you had zig-zag paths of wire and hedgehogs in the fire zones, but it's already a lot of stuff to begin with.

I am a fan of mobile defense. Since a huge amount of CoH's maps are urban, I usually fortify my men in a loose chain of self-supporting strong points. When we successfully repulse the enemy, we advance a building or two, with snipers scouting the path. Block by block, I move through the city, until my 'defense' is firing on their base.

I am very much an infantry guy; I play as either Allied Infantry, Axis Infantry, or Axis Terror. The PAK 38s of the Germans are indeed amazing. 1 Grenadier squad w/2 MGs is better than 2 MG teams, as the Grenadiers don't have to set up the gun, and are more versatile. Snipers are teh pwn as well. So perhaps Grenadiers+Sniper+PAK 38 (8 men) or maybe 2 MG teams+Sniper+Pak 38 (10 men, with the PAK sighted for most likely avenue of Allied armor)?

Some tanks can actually crush hedgehogs, though, and drive through them.

An arty or air stirke would quickly decimate that position. Or, as Ennui said, one could simply crush it with heavy tanks.

The problem is that CoH makes it almost impossible to maintain a static defence unless your enemy has absolutly no off map support or on map arty.

Hell, I reckon with a squad of riflemen to distract that building from one side, and a squad of fired up airbourne attacking from one of the othersides, that lovely defence would fall apart with one well placed satchel charge.

An allied infantry doctrine force sould simply pound it with howitzers until there was nothing left there but a smoking crater, armour could simply bash through with a bulldozing croc, airbourne could use airstrikes or stachels, any german force could pound it with neuble waffers, defensive could pound it with flack 88's or off map rockets, terror could V1 or firestorm the place and blitz kreig could simply waltz a stealthed storm trooper squad or 4 upto it and toss a bundled grenade through the window.

Immobile defenses can be easily beaten by armored vehicles or indirect fire. WW2 was the first war that this was true, a drastic change from the trenches of WW1 and a hard-learned lesson for the french.

What I find best is spread-out defenses, with defensive positions spread out that you can fall back upon in case your first one is broken through, or counter-batteries, your own artillery to take out the enemy ones.

What really works the best is if the enemy doesn't even know your there. If they don't know where to bomb, they can't hurt you. Hence why I love the axis AT guns. Camoflauge, tell them to hold fire... then wait for that perfect moment when the tank has already passed your position and its rear is in your sights...

Just out of curiousity, what building would be that important in mp? If you have that much time/resources to be building that, your enemy sucks.

the only thing i can think of is a forward barracks... but howitzers, v1s, or arty strikes would rape the shit out of that
