Unleash the Hounds: Starcraft II Beta begins

The AI is dumb, and by dumb I mean... shit I can't even come up with anything thats as dumb as it is. The AI doesn't really build anything, it doesn't scout, hell only thing it does is build a barrack. There are many versions of the AI... And none of them gives even the slightest challenge, and this is coming from a person who's last, some what decent touch to rts's, was Empire Earth.

But you can still try builds, polish your build order etc. Although it really makes no sense since the AI won't attack. Or if it attacks it comes at you with may like 4 marines.
The focus of the beta is on battle.net and multiplayer balance, I wouldn't be surprised if much of the bot AI was disabled.

So.. Pitz, impressions?
I'm pretty impressed with the game. There are a few changes I'd make for balance purposes, but in the end it's relatively good right now. For starters, with Zerg, the Roach Warren only costs 150 minerals. I'd imagine there would be a small gas charge to the building at least. Maybe 150 minerals and 50 gas? That would at least make you get the extractor that much earlier thus not getting you as much minerals so you have to choose. Queen or Roach? I'm sure that isn't the be all/end all in balance. Something to try I suppose.

Another note on the Zerg, the voice they use for the "We require more mineralsssssss" gets soooo old so quick. I've began to wait until I have surplus minerals for that reason lol.

The game is more focused on hard counters. Immortals rape Roaches and Collosi, Marauders rape about the same things....it's weird. Quite a few people have said they aren't happy about that change, as that is what made SC1 so fun, and it's true. For me, though, I don't mind the change too much. It's a lot different watching people play it, the experience it yourself. We'll have to wait until the beta opens up more for people to get a good feel for it.

The focus of the beta is on battle.net and multiplayer balance, I wouldn't be surprised if much of the bot AI was disabled.

That's exactly it. That is why they have disabled the "Co-op with AI" feature, along with a bunch of things in bnet turned off. Their focus is "PVP" as they said.

All I ever here is
"We require more beta keys!"

And people have updated the AI so it's decent now.

I tried the 5.0 AI (lazy something). Only difference I noticed was that instead of just building 4 marines, it built 4 marines + 2 helions.

I wish they would send another wave, but even then it's friggin hard to get a key thanks to 12 million wow players :p

Play a different map, and make sure you downloaded the AI map pack.

I've beaten the AI several times now. I hope it's because my scouting and build countering is paying off (as I can't seem to do this in SC1), but I'm suspecting that the AI just sort of gives up after tier 2.

The beta only lets you fight the Very Easy AI, right?

Honestly they aren't even close to matching up to a human opponent and are mostly for testing units with.

Yeah, the beta only has Very Easy. The h4x0rs are altering the AI themselves, if I'm not mistaken.

The one I have right now is insanely good at early game rushes (I actually lost a couple times) and pretty good in the middle, but fails to really transition into the upper tier units or just getting a big enough army of the smaller stuff. It's also really odd about trying to attack and then running away over and over and over. Still, it's fun, and I can actually practice. :p

Check my awesome Terran base-building skills! This map only has a big ramp that would have been too much of a pain to block off initially so I made my own wall of death!

Too bad the battlekrooseh kiptin doesn't have the same awesome accent.

I need me a practice buddy. To test certain strats against certain builds. Since the game is so new, I believe it would be very beneficial. Tav, get a key already!

I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't even developed the AI for skirmishes. They probably only have mission AI since it usually does completely different things than skirmish AI, to fit the scenario. Maybe they're doing something like... looking at player strategies and tactics before they actually make it... so it's more challenging or can adapt better... that'd be cool in my book.

I tried the hacked beta vs computers. Im not a starcraft player so it was very confusing. The game had no tutorials so i had no idea how to build stuff or anything. I got killed within 10 minutes of each round.

Il just have to wait until there are some guides or something, because right now im getting pwned hard.

StarBob: They have said they are making VERY intelligent AI. It doesn't do the whole "I know where you are already" crap the 1st one did. They scout, adjust builds based on what they see being built, have proper strats, etc.

Ravioli: You should play StarCraft: Brood War if you have it with some of us. We will teach you the way. I've done that to quite a few people here on the forums. If you don't have it....then you are going to remain lost until you just keep playing and learning what units do what. If you have any questions, hit me up on Steam. I'll answer it for ya.

I'm trying to learn but Starcraft 1 does not run reliably on Windows 7 no matter what I do :( There's this infamous desktop color issue. Any veterans here have a solution that works 100%?

Well, first of all, the colors are only messed up in the main menu. On battle.net the only time the colors should be messed up is when you're in a game room. In game it's always fine.

I can't join Battle.net on Windows 7; it gives me an error and reverts to desktop. Also, the color scheme is still screwed up in-game.

I beg to differ.

Now would be a perfect time to have a screenshot handy but I'm not at home :(

I've found that Compatibility Mode ("Run in 256 colors", "Run in 640x480") can help a lot but to get rid of the problem 100% you'll need to do this:

Make a new text file on your desktop, inside copy and paste these lines
Code:
taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
c:\games\starcraft\starcraft.exe (replace this line with your own starcraft location)
start explorer.exe
Rename your text file to "Starcraft.bat" (make sure to delete the .txt extension, you'll be asked if you are sure you want to change the file extension which you do). Now run the batch file instead of your Starcraft shortcut.

The issue is caused by a conflict Starcraft has with explorer.exe (The Windows process responsible for the start menu, the desktop, file browsing, etc). The batch file stops explorer.exe, starts Starcraft and then starts explorer.exe again after you exit Starcraft.

Ive got Starcraft Anthology available for download from the Blizz store. I might try it out tomorrow if i have the time/will. Too many games to play right now. If i do try it, il send a pm...or a pigeon with a letter tied to it (i like pigeons).

Get you one!

Wait, wrong game.

I'd be joining all you Broodwar peoples, but after having played a couple AI matches, it's metaphysically impossible for me to go back and play SC1 with all its god-awful pathfinding. I'm really sorry :(

Hey, you know what they say. Once you go macro, you never go back, yo.

Tried the new AI and it's a lot better, it massed marauders/marines and attacked pretty early on, well early meaning I had dark shrine up and dt's coming. It even threw a scan when I attacked it's base with templars. Even made two expansions, but thats not really a good idea. I was attacking it's base, destroyed it's forces and the AI decides "hey let's expand now".

Apparently the real second wave of beta invites is next week?

I hope more of us North Americans get it. And Tav, let's not forget Tav. :D

Okay, I have seen that batch script posted before but hadn't tried it yet. I'll give it a shot.

Okay, finished trying the batch file method. It worked great until 30 minutes in when my computer froze so solid I had to hit reset. In Windows 7.

Any ideas?

Tried it, and er, Starcraft won't even launch. I've checked the location twice.

EDIT: Never mind, it does launch. However, I still get an error when I try to connect to Battle.net

Does Win7 include the UDP protocol (At least I think it's UDP)? I know Vista didn't, and you couldn't use Starcraft on bnet with it either.

What? That's ****ed up. I thought Windows 7 was an awesome guy.

And virtual XP mode doesn't help. It says something about not being able to revert to 800*600 mode and quits.

I'm beginning to hate Win7 now. HATE.

That's retarded. Maybe you should give it some mandatory service and see how it shapes itself up? :p

Mandatory Service? No, I think Stalin had the right idea with his gulags. :p

Too bad the Ghost doesn't breathe that green-smokey stuff this time.

But I'm glad I have the SC2 Ghost avatar secured, ****ing Dog--.

Not at the moment, sorry.

This won't fix any existing errors, it's meant to fix messed up colours and nothing else.

WHAT IS YOUR MAJOR MALFUNCTION NUMBNUTS? DIDN'T MOMMY AND DADDY GIVE YOU ENOUGH ATTENTION AS A CHILD?

WERE YOU BORN A FAT SLIMY SCUMBAG PUKE PIECE OF SHIT OR DID YOU HAVE TO WORK HARD ON IT, WINDOWS 7?

I just finished my first-ever game on Battle.net on Windows 7. It works, dude. Just be lucky I guess?

If you want to play with us you'll need to get set up with ICCup.

http://www.iccup.com/starcraft/sc_start.html

Follow the instructions there and you should be set. Also, with the anti-hack launcher you can run it with lan latency and window mode which should help if you're on win7.

For everybody having issues with Windows 7

This resolved it for me. Whenever I got the ICCUP launcher with windowed mode, the crazy colors are gone.
