What would you look for in a half-life film?

What I liked about the HL soundtrack is that its unobtusive, and is only meant to set a mood, not make you bang your head, and it does that very well.Alot of the time you dount even notice the music, it just flows so well with the game. Halo fanboys aside, I think that Half-Life has one of,if not the best, videogame sountrack.

I don't want to watch some 2 hour long film and be stuck with the same stupid reoccuring theme I've been through in the games. I need new motifs, dammit, new themes!

Why dont you post the script

Also U2 could do a great soundtrack, October would be a good song for HL Movie

a soundtrack for a half-life movie would have to be an original score

Ok, ill admit, the soundtrack was a HUGE mistake, catastrophic, soundtack is as good as gone.

Dr edwards in answer to peoples questions, Edwards is a scientist that gordon works with in the film, i couldnt write parts for all the scientists from the game, so i sort of combined them all into one person. He is slightly eccentric. I was thinking about David hyde peirce, but he might seem out of place

Speaking of out of place, Robin Willams is actually a big half life fan. i know its a daft choice, but Williams has been making alot more serious films of late, but he was in talks to record a voice for HL2, but scheduling prevented this.

Ill post parts of the script soon. What ill tell you though is that it is all the half life stories told in one. Its one story, with interlinking segments. I suppose the closest thing i can compare it to is traffic or Pulp fiction.

I can confirm that gordon does not talk, but does narrate.

I will admit, i am an underdog, I have no actuall film credits to my name yet (Writing or directing) but i have passion for the games. Plus im running these boards because i know im not the most obvious choice, and this is my way of finding out what other people want from the film, the only way i could make a perfect movie is if everyone chimes in with ideas, which i will more than willingly accept.

To be hounest, the main reason im doing this is that i cant bear the though of Uwe Boll ruining Half Life.

If anyone has any comments, please chime in, the more the merrier...

I dont intend too...

Thank you for the input everyone, please, the more people who can give ideas for the film the better we can make.

Some Scenes that wernt in the game but could be added are:

1) you could have The Marines Arriving Black Mesa via Armoured Tanks, APC's and driving through the canyon's getting attacked from all sides by Xen aliens
2) When you get to the Lambda complex, you could have a scientist warning you that the other Trips to Xen didnt go so well and cut to a narated scene of some scientists going to Xen and getting killed.
3) At the end when you are fighting the bosss ( I cant spell his name) you could have interlocking sequences of the Army attacking and invading xen, then when the nilianth is killed have a scene of Some tanks destroying a xen weapon and them retreating/surrendering.

Are they any good?

i like all the songs on the soundtrack but they do not fit half life at all.

Here's my ideas. I think you need to go a bit more EXXXTREEEMME with various aspects.

The G-Man: Tom Hanks.

Life is like a box of TIIIIMMMME

Well the armouerd tank thing does actually happen, great minds think alike i suppose.

There is a scene later on where gordon and barney try to steal one in an escpae attempt. getting attacked on all sides by headcrab zombies. The training level woman appears, sort of a nod to the original game.

I would like to point out here and now that i haven't messed too much with the storyline from the games. They are only minor changes to the story.

If I may, try and not make the whole affair a showcase of the myriad ways the USMC can get its clock cleaned by the friendly fauna of Xen. Obviously this happens a thousand times if it happens once, but I recall the two being equal threats in their respective zones. That said, the army V. alien portions should kick sufficient ass.
And quite interested to hear how you'll handle the G-man ending bit.

Hey, I thought of an ending - instead of all that making a choice with the G-Man business, which wouldn't be a very good ending for a movie, I think it might be cool that:

After the triumph of killing Nihilanth, Gordon is teleported back to Black Mesa, and follows some noises into in a control room. A group of scientists and security guards are crowded round screens with different news channels on. The news shows the portal storms around the world, with aliens causing chaos in cities, suburbs, farms etc. The scientist who sent Gordon to Xen turns around and says "Oh, Gordon - you survived..." He glances at the bank of monitors and looks at Gordon. Close up on the scientist's face (or scanning across the news scenes).

The scientist says
"It's too late."

Credits.

Eh? Eh?
Have I unintentionally ripped that from something else?

I like that idea, but instead of Gordon, why not let it be the G-Man? He is, after all, watching Gordon and the other characters the whole time. If it was written as a report (kinda like in the Limony Snicket movie), it could have more significance.

Also, what exactly are you trying to do, Half-Life 2, Half-Life, both, or a movie after the events of Half-Life 2?

agreed I think Gman would make a better choice.

and what about spielberg(sp?) he's done good movies.

A unique, obscure and thoughtful sci-fi action adventure with believable characters and believable enemies. With some twists of course.

Same for HL3 really. I enjoyed Donni Darko, the team who made that could be a good start.

how about the adagio for strings on the soundtrack.
and directed by... Quentin(sp?) tarintino(sp?)

What do people have against Robin Williams? He *can*make serious movies, and what's more is he can do them well. One hour photo anyone?
Ray Romano has acting skills like a stone and is about as charismatic. If he destroys the role of Barney I am going to kill me. No wait, better yet, I'll kill him!

I would want a really great ending. If it was up to me, I'd slice in a portion of the G-man's speech from OpFor, regarding to the matter of witnesses, and then show different parts of BMRF with scenes of combat, being interrupted by a slow-mo atomic blast ripping the base to shreds.

I didnt think of the G-man idea, its a cool concept, but i think its too far into the script to start rewording all the lines to G-mans perspective. What i may not have mentioned is that adrian shepard has his own segment of the story, as does Gordon, Barney and G man, but shepard isnt the star of his segment, the lead goes to a new character called COMMANDER BARRIS who i think should be played by keifer sutherland.

The ending is really cool, it manages to contain all the endings to the games, apart from barney, whose ending im sad to say i have changed a little. On the subject of barney, Once you read some of the script that im going to post soon, youll see why i picked ray, other than the fact that he looks and sounds like barney in the games, the actor in question would have to switch beetween the ethicl dillema of his situation and still be able to do deliver cyncal, snide comments, But i digress if people would like a rough copy of the ending please PM Me, and ill be more than happy too.

Adagio would actually feature on the soundtrack, but i didnt want to list it because people may have drawn a parrelel with platoon.

I heard Tarrentino was interested in directing, ive wriiten to him to ask whether he'd be willing to take a gamble and produce it, but i havent heard anything back so i can assume hes either working on his own version with robin asquith or he doesnt fell that the risk is worth taking with such a big franchise on a newbie writer/ director.

If valve do shoose me to make the film, i would like to point out here and now that id ask marc laidlaw to act as a senior script editor, to make sure it feels true to the game.

While im interested in making all the films, Im working on just the first, but if its succesfull and valve want me to do the whole franchise, i wont say no.

Most of the mosters will be puppetry or costumes, ill try to limit CGI where i can

In case anyone didnt get a PM, I have ditched the soundtrack, if anyone wants to suggest tracks for a new one to accomany the score (either string based, or dust brothers) please feel free.

Finally, i realise that if i cant direct id want it to go to one of the following:
James wan
Quentin Tarrentino
David Fincher
James Cameron
Richard kelly

But ideally, id direct it, i have some brilliant ideas for a distinct visual style.

Call me a moron, but I'd always thought Keifer Sutherland would make a good inner Gordon, narrative-wise.
And maybe a voice bit from Robert Culp somewhere, just as a throwback to eight or nine Breen fans out there?

I did originally think of Sutherland as Gordon, but people werent very impressed by that suggestion

Well, not if you see his face any. Just for the narrative idea, since Sutherland has a wicked awesome voice for that sort of thing.

Nah, SUtherland would be better suited as Barris.

ON another note, who should play SHepard, and what does everyone think of the interlinking segment idea?

TJC, how is Gordon gonna narrate if he doesn't talk? He gonna stand in the corner of the screen and hold up idiot boards? Sign language?
Ah, I'm just being pedantic...

Yep you are, lol. ill post the script soon, that will explain it better.

i would hate to see a HL film.

I would agree. Especially if it turned out like movies that I have seen in the past:

Mario Brothers
Mortal Kombat
Street Fighter
Tomb Raider

To name a few.

not to mention house of the dead, alone in the dark, and the upcoming bloodrayne. my god. why are all video-game movies such garbage?

Because most of the people who direct them (other than Uwe Boll) have never played the games, but Uwe Boll just plain sucks anyway. He has no sense of tension, horror or fear of the unexpected, he also relies alot on CGI, which can backfire.

Personally, I think making a film based on the universe of Half-life 2 would be a bit bland.

Not to mention how ignorant people will ask "omg y doznt gorun talk :rolleyes:"

-shudders-

But anyway, you may also have to get the song artist's permission if I remember correctly.

Good luck with it though

Thanks for the good luck message.

The film would actually be of HL1, but like i say, if im succesfull i hope theyd let me do the whole franchise...

The first part of the movie, the introduction to Black Mesa, absorbing the atmosphere of a secret underground facility in the desert, meeting the various scientists and finally the accident is all pure gold imo. That's easily adaptable for a movie.

I just don't know where you can take the story from there? What kind of structure will it take? The shit has hit the fan now the audience is totally confused, what the hell just happened. That's good. Maintain that mystery for a certain period of time.

The tricky bit is establishing Gordons objectives and keeping it semi-consistent with the game but in a way that it doesn't feel like a game. "Omg Gordon is up to the gargantuan level!". It can't feel like that. Obviously you'd have to cut a lot out from the game, but keep the general mission the same.

There's so many elements that could cause the film to fall apart and be laughed at. Xen, for example. It would have to done to perfection to be treated seriously. Similar to the ents in the two towers i suppose. Walking/talking trees, how do you make that seem not completely stupid!

you could do xen without the jumping about, but have more monsters. Otherwise it WOULD be laughed at

Ive found a way to handle Xen. It would look good if it was done properly, but im not so sure if it fell into the wrong directorial hands.

Its essantially a blinding flash.

Also, Xen in this is more of an emphasis on the parellel dimonsion angle

therfore

Xen = rotted, decreped Black Mesa slowly sinking into marsh land...

no

Plot Summary: A precocious boy and his jaded sister use their imaginative powers to escape a confining home-life,
Wow Valve really sold out on that one :D

lol, I double checked when they announced production for that a few mounths back.

God was i worried that Uwe Boll had his way...
