I'm sorry, but my parents did the best they damn well could for me. Call them what you want, but they did the right thing, in my opinion.

Solaris, stop living in the world of ****ing ideals. Not everyone's capable of being a supernanny. They do things wrong, or they simply don't have time to learn her methods of straightening kids out. Similarly, not everyone is a trained psychologist. They're just ordinary people. I mean, it's alright saying "don't spank your child, do something else non-violent instead" but do you seriously expect every parent to instinctively know how to handle that advice as well as it should be handled?

I think spanking, limited in use, as okay. My dad used it, and like Aldridge I consider myself pretty alright.

Exactly, and I might add that there are kids out there that DESERVE a ****ing spanking. I went to a family friend's cousin's (whatever's) house to find the 4-5 year old children running around smashing furniture, jumping around and generally being a nuisance. The visiting grandparents told them politely to stop doing it, so what does this kid do? He says "I don't have to listen to you, you bitch" and does the finger to the grandma. The grandpa smacked the kid, and the mum (who is an anti-spanking mum) goes off her head towards her own Dad about spanking his grandson.

It's just plain annoying how people can be so uptight about it.

i dont think there is a problem with spanking, as long as its used very rarely. eg. when i was a kid i'd get smacked by my parents only when i did something really bad, and they always made sure i knew how serious it was, and i know for a fact that they hated doing it, so only did it when nothing else worked. i think in a situation like that its perfectly fine and saying something like "if you have to smack your child you fail as a parent" is ****ing ridiculous.

Let me ask of those of you who were spanked ...ever feel humilated after being spanked? it's fear maquerading as discipline. I'm not teaching through fear, it's counterproductive

Personally, I didn't feel humiliated. I felt more sad. It made me understand what I had done wrong and it taught me to think about my behavior before acting it out.

For some, however, humility can straighten them out. It's all part of the learning experience.

Being spanked never sent the message to me that physical force was always the better option.

If a child does something wrong, he will (perhaps) avoiding the same action in the future. But not because he thinks what he did is wrong, but because he's afraid of the ounishment. You have to teach a kid why it is wrong to, for example, steal. You have to make them afraid of the act itself, not the punishment that follows. That's the only way to teach them right from wrong.

- OK Ben, stealing is wrong because you are supposed to pay for the stuff you need. You earn money by making an effort and that is the way it works. Stealing is bad and could get you in deep trouble. So don't do it again, OK?
- OK dad I won't do it again.
- Good.

A week later, Ben is caught stealing again.

when you were 2? 3? 5? 8? you cant tell me that kids that age understand that getting spanked is to teach the child discipline ..they see it as punishment, nothing else

Right. I was never spanked and I'm fine. I'm not usigng it anecdotally here as alot of people are. I'm just saying spanking is not nessacary for a good child. A memory I have of spanking is after staying at a familly freinds. The girl there was about 8 and she had done something wrong, nothing major. But her dad shouted at her to come upstairs for 'a smacked bottom'. She started crying and saying no, and he picked her up and took her up stairs and spanked her a few time, I could hear her crying throughout. Now her fathers a great guy, he's really fantastic, I stayed with them just recently and he's awesome, really kind. Just I feel his disclipline was off. Now the girl is anerexic, the other kids are into class a drugs, there are some real familly problems. Now I'm not putting this down purely to the spanking, but I cannot help wonder how much damage the father picking up his crying daugheter as she pleased not to be spanked and spanking her making her cry more did to the relationship... Positive? I think not.

I was probably about 5 years old. I certainly understood that I had done something wrong and that it was unacceptable to do it again. Sure, I saw it as punishment but it was also molding my behavior into understanding what was right and what was wrong. It showed me, at a young age, that there were consequences directly associated with my actions.

If its just minor, then whats the point? If it doesn't work, if its not painfully enough to be a deterrent.

You shouldn't maintain the love of your kids through the threat of violence.

well i was spanked with a belt when i was little and i turned out good. i even got my first gun when i was 6, and i mean a real gun it was a 22 rifle. im not violent or anything. you can still spank a child and love them as long as its not excessive and the child knows what they did wrong

Your parents were idiots.
What kind of idiot gives a 6 year old a gun.

i actually knew what a gun does and what could happen if i aimed it at someone. the gun was for shooting targets. i might have been 7 though. and it was kept in a vault

Still.
You were 7.

So?

I've been shooting guns since I was little as well. Nothing bad happened to me ether.

Legal to shoot at that young of age? Yes.

Legal to own at that young of age? No. I didn't own the guns, I said I shot'em.

Its legal for a 7year old to hold a firearm...
I'm genuinely amazed.

I cant see anything wrong with that so long as its in a very controlled environment. Surely teaching children how to handle guns correctly at a young age is a good thing - especially in a gun obsessed society like the US?

Hmm, perphaps your right.

i dont think its good to excessively spank a child and if the child develops a bruise or draws blood then there is a problem. and i was in a controlled environment when i used my gun. i never used a handgun when i was young which are the dangerous guns

Heh, in my house, we had to beware "The Tanny". It was a big, wobbly perspex ruler. Aptly named for the tanning effect it applied.

Uh huh... riiiiight. So rediculous.

Nearly all the people here with actual experience in being spanked, say they turned out just fine. Obviously that's not the case with everybody, but obviously there are some parents that go overboard and venture into the realm of severe physical abuse.

THAT'S when you have the chance to produce monsters.

I think spanking should be allowed, but not to excess. No child beatings.

Me, i recieved a belt to the butt when i was between 4 and 6 and never again. I tell you, you learn discipline fast.

A little bit of respect for your elders goes a very long way

Our schools do it for parents also. <3 baseball bat to the butt. Most of us obey the rules now.

Word.

What are you, a masochist?

Hmm, that kinda came out wrong. I meant as in other people's butt, those retarded idiots that think they're so cool. Of course, once upon a time, when you were a student moderation guy you could hit people yourself, but now we can't do that. We now just guard the front gates of the school and patrol during break + lunch times.

Anyway, of course, there are laws regarding corporal punishment (as in, spanking rod no thincker than 5mm, no longer than 45cm kind of stuff), but who cares. It's all done in love for the students, and the ones that get hit are the Korean equivelent of.... chavs? Or whatever you guys call them.

It's wrong for schools or whatever to issue physical punishment.

And it doesn't really do any good ether. Hell my friends had a contest on who could get the most paddles.
