the zombies in the open ravenholm area (the one with the faulty chopping machine) spawn endlessly. i tracked them to their spawn point (a dead-end alley) and killed a zombie i saw there. after i left they kept reappearing

yeah, HL2 was a bit too easy, even on hard mode. The only part that gave me some trouble was the turret defense sequence in Nova Prospekt (the 2nd one, in the jail cells). Part of the reason it isn't that hard (for me) is that there are lots of healing items and ammo scattered around. Just...

The Combine also enslaved the Vortigaunts. They were just in Xen longer, so they could "export" their slaves.

yeah, Gordon would've been just another model for headcrab zombies. Even Barney made a comment on that when they stormed the Nexus. He had Gordon attack the floor turrets and said "You do it Gordon! you're the one with the HEV suit!" (or something like that)
