^^ What he said. Basically becuase you already have Steam installed to your C: HL2 wants to put itself onto the same drive as it HAS to be installed within the Steam folders. Uninstall Steam, start the HL2 installation after rebooting and you should be able to choose your installation location.

You need the internet to activate the game, once it's been activated as far as I know you can play SP by loading Steam in offline mode.

You don't get access to HL2 or DOD2 with Retail. AFAIK.

How do you know for certain mate? My money is on the randomness of code and the ghost in the machine.
