um, yes. cd's have always been $16-$20 a pop as far as i remember. long before mp3s were ubiquitous.

stop dodging my question!

i think they would lower the prices back to what they were originally envisioned before piracy became rampant. which is what have WOULD have been the norm.

I don't remember games ever being lower. Games have always been around $40 or $50 USD.

I think that the 'cost' is highly exaggerated as to the 'damage' caused.

whatever makes you feel better about pirating software..

yes.

prices of everything rise every year.. why would the computer industry be any different? software prices may have been rising due to piracy... but its not the only reason..

there are other factos besides piracy which raise the prices in general.. but they haven't been mentioned..

Anyone else find it odd that posey seems to think we're all software nazis and we're opposed to Longhorn/pallidium because it'd stop the ability to pirate games?

Last I checked, almost everyone's case in this thread was that we shouldn't be forced to use a security module that will decide what we can and can't run on our home computers.

The case here isn't so much about piracy for most of us (I can't say this about everyone, but I couldn't care less if I couldn't pirate games.. the temptation would be gone and I'd just buy the games I really want, which is what I generally do these days), but the fact that MS is trying to tighten their grip on an already monopolized operating system market.

yep...console games were $50 wayyyy before software piracy was "rampant"

nothing has changed because of piracy...unless nintendo cartridge piracy was rampant in the 80's!!!

and like Timmy said...CDs have always been $16-20

thanks for bringing us all back to the real point :p

lol, I'm not sure if you guys are being sarcastic or not :( but I see no reason for people to continue flame wars because posey keeps dropping flame bait

yes...timmy's comments are a bit dry sometimes...you can't tell if he's being serious, sarcastic, silly, dumb, or a combination of all of those.

i'm posting to discuss the topic, not make it really big just for the hell of it :\

alright. well i need to do my heavy bag routine so im done for now.

you can try and justify piracy, hide behind inflation as the reason prices go up, etc. i know how the mindset works, i know people that are software pirates in real life.

but there is one fact that cant be denied. software devs HAVE to raise prices if they arent meeting quotas to stay in business. but they dont necessarily HAVE to raise prices if they are meeting their quotas or exceeding them, which leaves room for letting prices stay the same or possibly lowering them. id rather go with the scenario that allows for 2 other options.

ill be on later tonight maybe. till then you can post things like 'ha posey left because he got owned!'

or 'posey is so stupid. hes dumb!..and stupid! haha! what a lamer!'

how about we just post "posey doesn't understand business or economics very well...and he avoids answering questions that he doesn't have good answers for."

i can't believe it. the post count has quadrupled (spelling?) since the last time i was here....and you're STILL talking about piracy. do you not learn? why are you covering the same ground over and over? are your egos getting in the way? i think they are. admit when you're wrong and know when to stop. it shows wisdom, no need to inflate your ego about it.

and you're accusing me of having intercourse with my mother? i can't stand the cow why would i want to sleep with her....*falls off chair*

Why bother, you just said it for us:LOL:

i didn't read the past few pages thoroughly but i get the gist of it. so has anyone actually had any epiffanies or changed their opinion on longhorn?

Mask had some good things to say, not so much about longhorn, but interesting nevertheless.

pretty much anything mr. pink had to say was an epiphany warehouse.

Software piracey isn't cool, the rum tastes like sh*t and all the parrots are fake... on that note there is a new song i need to download be back later

bah i spelt epiphany wrong..i'm losing it.

i think i've warmed to longhorn a bit more now. we won't get anywhere unless we shed our shame about what we do. porn is acceptable, as long as there's concenting adults yadda yadda yadda then feel free, microsoft can't bust you for it. the way i see it, sooner or later this is gonna catch on. we'll probably see it with tv, mobile phones etc. shit i bet they do it already. listen in on your phonecalls to see what sort of stuff you like then make sales calls to you. although that's more nefarious then what MS has planned it still plays on people's minds. "i don't want any old tom dick and harry knowing what i do". so the question is can we trust MS with our private computer use knowledge. i don't know how to answer that maybe some of you do.

Well one question about longhorn though, what if you don't want your computer to even be connected to the internet? Would i have to phone everything in or something?

someone suggested this thread be renamed to:

"a comprehensive examination of stupidity in the face of reason"

EDIT: and posey, don't say we're the ones being faced with reason...that would be lame.

i like. can it be arranged?

::rant::

i think that M$ is retarded..... ok.... we've been pushing to the edge of technology and i think we are alomst there... i mean.... look at HL2, D00m3, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R! they can get better.... but not much! long horn's new system setup, from what i've seen, is just pure idiotcy!!! they KNOW they have a monopoly on most of the world's PCs.... why make everyone change??? and Palladium is just taking away our freedom!!! they better make palladium opt. out-able or i'm personally going to shove my foot up mr. bill gate's money making A$$!!!!

::end rant::

hunter, games have a long way to go before they're realistic. They're no where near realistic as it stands, but they're slowly getting there.

Also, Pallidium will be optional, you can turn it off. However, you won't be able to run, say, Half-Life 3 without pallidium enabled (that's assuming all this goes forward and software companies look toward pallidium [starting to get to me, I know pallidium isn't the security module's name anymore, it's something else.. but I'm too lazy to look it up] for anti-piracy measures).

I personally don't like the idea of a huge, monopolistic and rather greedy megacorporation having the ability to rummage around in my computer, deleting stuff as it wished, or perhaps preventing me from downloading things.

Wouldn't that technically be an invasion of privacy and the removal of free will?

Or have I misunderstood this issue?

time to switch to linux. longhorn sounds horribly patriot-acty to be allowed in my anarchy-filled existance.

yes, it is, but using their software you agree to their terms immediately. Their eula can say whatever they want to, they could probably make you give your left nut if they wanted to. But they need your consent via you using their software so its not illegal or anything. plus, the patriot act already removes your privacy, so whats another foreign hand in your pants(not in a good way)?

If you think there isn't much left to add in terms of visuals after next year's games, then you're overestimating them.

Tell me if you can see any differences between these renders and any game that will be released in the next 5 years.

... and those aren't even the best examples. I've been fooled by some renders, but never by a game... not even close.

EDIT: I wonder how long it will be until I get to play a game that looks completely photorealistic.

Dunno about the "Patriot act". I live in Australia.

If there's no other acceptable alternative for running games on (Unless OpenGL is picked up by more devs), then that does remove all choice, which essentially forces people to do something they don't want to (and shouldn't have to) in order to do something they do want to do.

That's my somewhat confusingly-worded 0.000002343 of a cent, anyway.

If all else fails, I'll just dual boot with Longhorn and Linux. Longhorn strictly for gaming, Linux (or maybe XP) for freedom :)

I was reading some interview with one of gaming's leading figureheads (can't remember what company though), and he said he figures in about 10 years games will start looking photorealistic. That'd be cool :)

Thats basically what the entire problem is, choose microshaft or choose not to play games on your pc.

microshaft eh? I've heard that somewhere before... (damn hooker)

i found the Longhorn beta some weeks ago...has anyone tried it? I didint dare to install it...Paladium might catch me
